Open Thread 8/27: Padres at Braves (if they show up)
San Diego Padres at Atlanta Braves, Aug 27, 2009 7:10 PM EDT
Rain is forcast from now through the end of the night, so this might be a long one (in more ways than one if we're not winning).
The Braves recalled Buddy Carlyle from his rehab assignment with Gwinnett and sent Manny Acosta down. Fine with me.
Let's see if Javier Vazquez can hold the Padres under one run... that seems to be the only way to win these days.

what?
do you watch the games? chipper’s definitely got his swing back, the 2 flyouts he hit right on the nose and were hit very cleanly, and the groundout in his last at bat would’ve been a base hit through the hole if it were not for the gold glove first basemen patrolling the area and making an amazing diving stop. I guarantee you if he’s in the lineup tonight, he turns it around.

The official mascot of this game thread, apparently....

"It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone." Lose this one and it's time to officially shut it down for the season
You can’t get swept by a last place team. The good news is that Colorado lost yesterday, The Marlins lost today, Colorado & LA currently tied up in the 5th today. So potentially a chance to stay even through this series, although we should have gained ground, considering the Colorado is facing a first place team at home, we are facing a last place team.
Why'd the Mets, of all teams, have to draft John Maine!?!?
Yeah...
maybe we could just forfeit the rest of our games. Sounds like a reasonable option.

Sounds good to me
I mean seriously, I’m sick of gaining momentum then dropping a series to a sucky team like SD
Why'd the Mets, of all teams, have to draft John Maine!?!?
yeah...
no danger of gaining any momentum there…

So what you are saying is, even with the loss yesterday, we didn’t lose any ground in the WC chase?

maybe when McLouth comes back, but i doubt it. It makes a ton of sense to hit Roachy higher in the lineup, so Bobby probably won’t do it.

Yunel is the Queen of Hearts
sorry
but who the fuck is Luke Ohler? You gotta be kidding me with the Giants announcers being the best. They’re some of the worst in baseball. The YES announcers arent bad, but the SNY guys are horrible.

true about Giants announcers, plus did you see this quote:
There are some talents at ESPN, like Jon Millerwow he needs new definition of talent. I guess YES isn’t too bad but I think i’ve just heard them too much that its just second nature to me and don’t expect them to be on a best in baseball list. Agree completly on SNY.
Yunel is the Queen of Hearts
another thing about broadcasters
i dont get all the hate towards Darren Sutton and Mark Grace. I get all the DBacks games and i like the guys. They’re energetic and entertaining even tho the DBacks are garbage. Grace does go overboard every once in a while, but its definately better than the Giants announcers who are in a complete mono-tone for 3 hours.

This is the type of balanced offensive game we need to be playing with from here on out. Yeah, seven singles, but getting them in bunches and taking advantage of walks and other such give aways is more effective than swinging away and hoping the ball leaves the fence. Seven singles, five runs…. look how many runs we’ve scored the past few days.
Goodbye all

I think, some may be a bit spent after the emotional start to the week.
Such promise of gaining on the WC and it didn’t materialize.
And, with the Phillies on the way, it should get more active.
This is so good to see. Still hitting after the 2nd inning.
And, I know it’s just the 6th…but…i just don’t know how the team would mentally be able to regroup in time for the Phillies tomorrow if they allowed themselves to be swept by the Padres at home. This is looking more like the Braves we’ve wanted to see.
Hanson can one up Happ tomorrow if he can go to 10-2 and down the Phils. Can’t wait to smash Pedro too!
