Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 8/25

Sorry for no post yesterday. The new Batman game came out and I was....indisposed.

Gwinnett - Off

G-Braves still maintain a 2.5 game lead with 13 games to play, four of which are against Durham, who is trailing them

Mississippi 6, Chattanooga 7

  • B. Hicks 2-5 2 HR(8), 3 RBI, K
  • C. Rodriguez 4-5 3 2B
  • C. Kimbrel 1IP 0H 0R 0BB 1K

Brandon Hicks has been trying to get my attention the last couple of weeks, but the problem with that is he spent the first 4 months doing little more than most fans (the ones in the stands and the ones that keep you cool). Concepcion Rodriguez, however, has been red hot lately hitting .372 in his last 10 games with 7 doubles and a homer. Remember when looking at his season stats that Mississippi is a very difficult park to hit in.

Potomac 6, Myrtle Beach 1

  • C. Johnson 1-3 HR(30), 2K

Congratulations to Cody Johnson for being the first Brave at any level to hit 30 homers this season. In fact, the only other person in the organization with 20 HRs this year is Gerry Rodriguez.. He really does have prodigious power. Unfortunately for Cody he also has 160 Ks. Also Cole Rohrbough got hammered again.

Rome 9, Charleston 10- 12 Innings

  • L. Sumoza 2-6 HR(4), 2 RBI, K
  • S. Sime 3-6 2B, RBI, K, SB(10)
  • D. Delgado 5.1IP 9H 5R 0B 6K

Rome loses and clinches the organizational sweep. Bad night for everyone (except Gwinnett).  I honestly don't know what to think about Sumoza. We hear how great his tools are and he flashes the ability to put them all together sometimes, but it just hasn't fallen into place yet.

Johnson City 3, Danville 1

  • M. Jones 2-4 CS(3)
  • T. Stovall 3.1IP 2H 2R 6BB 4K
  • J. Lorick 3.2IP 1H 0R 0BB 6K

I don't really know anything about Jeff Lorick other than the Braves have been using him mostly as a reliever and, as you can see, he can strike a dude out. (39K in 32IP). You know at the beginning of the year I wondered why Tyler Stovall didn't make one of the full season clubs like Spruill, Hoover and DeVall. Now I know.

GCL Braves 1, GCL Pirates 2

  • J. Linger 1-3 HR(2)
  • R. Pacheco 3IP 4H 2R 1BB 3K

Rome is the last, best hope right now for the entire organization not getting swept tonight. Go Rome! Way to fail the organization Rome. Also, Ronan Pacheco is a 21 year old Domincan southpaw who has put up mediocre stats this season. He has a few Ks, but his walks and hits are fairly high and has also given up 4 HR in 33 innings thus far.

I may be wrong

But it seems like Cole usually has only one or two bad innings, but they are really really bad.

Are we entertaining any possible thoughts of moving him to the BP or are we trying to stick with him? Man, I wish he could get it all together

well the thing is, his peripherals aren’t terrible. He his still getting strike outs and he is walking a few guys, but an absurd amount. He has given up 11 homers. But that is only 1 per 10 innings or so. His BABIP is .341 on the season, so maybe he has just been a little unlucky so far.

He doesn’t seem to do well when runners get on. Tends to lead to big innings. A double, followed by a sac bunt that is thrown away allowing a runner to score. Then a walk, a double steal and another double. Same kind of thing two innings later. Not sure how you instruct a pitcher to get through tough innings. Seems more mental than physical.

this aint happening.

i hope we draft REALLY fucking well next year…otherwise, Oriole mediocrity here we come!

I am really not even sure what you mean by this.

by yondaime4 on Aug 26, 2009 1:45 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

ummmm, i mean...

that right now we have a fair amount of talent in AA and ALOT of ???s everywhere else. Hicks, people say, is the future of our Middle Infield. IF that’s the case, we’ll be the Orioles of the past decade: pretty mediocre. Never horrid, never decent. Good players abound, but they never gel in any meaningful way (in terms of wins and losses).

Next year, we NEED to draft a few (2-3) competent Middle Infield prospects, another good OF bat (i’m thinking CF) and a glut of Starting Pitchers.

look at our system now and it’s the most unimpressive (outside of Heyward and Freeman) it’s been in over 15 years.

in OVER 15 years.

Next year’s draft can, in theory, change that in a hurry (see the Tampa and A’s as examples of this) and vault us back in the top 5 (we were rated there here http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/insider/columns/story?columnist=law_keith&id=3848691&action=login&appRedirect=http%3a%2f%2finsider.espn.go.com%2fmlb%2finsider%2fcolumns%2fstory%3fcolumnist%3dlaw_keith%26id%3d3848691 yet, that’s an old list and with the regression of some of the arms in our system, i think we’re probably around 10 now).

otherwise, Orioles here we come!

I personally think our system right now is as talented and exciting as it’s been in the 15 years I’ve been closely following it.

I think your entire argument is pretty weak. We had a top 5 system coming into the year and the main reason it isn’t top 5 now is because we graduated several players and traded others away to make the major league ball club better. You don’t have to have a top 10 system every minute of every season in order to be a contender.

Also, how do you figure we need starting pitching in the minors? First, our starting pitching depth is pretty amazing at the minor league level right now, and second we won’t need any of those guys for two seasons, so even if our depth is in the low minors, we have time for them to develop. And, also, in baseball you never draft for need, you draft the player available.

Finally, what positions do we need to immediately fill in the majors that makes it so likely that we are going to be as mediocre as the Orioles (who, by the way, currently have an amazing farm system and have to be primed for a turnaround in a couple seasons)? As far as I can see the most glaring needs next season will be OF and 1B. Oh look, We have guys to take those spots….

You sound like quite the pessimist. I agree that we need to have a good draft next year but don’t agree that our system is that weak. I think we have solid pitching depth in the minors and have a pretty young team already on the big league roster. Hope we can find a few legit prospects in next year’s draft but come on you gotta enjoy what we have here.

Ridiculous.

Not when we have teenagers in full season ball that throw the way ours do.

You’re completely discounting the arms we have stockpiled back. We have the young pitching just in the minors to trade for damn near whatever we need.

Q: If on-base pct is so important then why don't they put it on the scoreboard? -Failcoeur

A: Because the Braves don't want to show their fans how bad you suck.

Well shit

Marlins win
Rockies win in 10 innings
Giants win

Great night. Not to mention our minor league teams got rocked.

So Cody is the first guy to hit 30 homers in the Carolina League since 97, and he’s currently tied for the overall Minor League lead in home runs.

thanks, I looked for some Carolina League stats, but didn’t feel like doing the research. What is the record?

by yondaime4 on Aug 26, 2009 1:45 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I looked it up back in April; in 1949 Muscle Shoals hit 55. I saw a few other guys hit in the high 40s back in the 50s and 60s, but I don’t think anybody has hit even 40 in the league for a while. It’s a very impressive feat, that’s for sure.

yeah. I did see the guy who hit 55. Must have been a different league back then.

Just wasn’t the Braves night. Ouch.

How’s the Batman game Yondaime4? It looks good, and I was thinking about getting it. Not sure if I want to buy or just rent.

Freaking Amazing. Seriously, if you like Batman as well as video games you should be playing it right now.

And two days ago,...

there were several games, including a pair of double headers. Not a lot special I saw, but a few solid performances.
