Braves' Schafer Needs Surgery
This isn't good news for the Braves or Schafer. Hopefully he bounces back from this setback. We need a good leadoff hitter and if he plays up to his potential he's be a perfect fit.
Schafer learned on Tuesday with a visit to Braves hand specialist Dr. Gary Lourie that the conservative route was not working. He’s scheduled to have surgery on Monday.
The surgery will keep him out of action for three months so his 2009 season is over and any chance he had at a September call-up is ruled out. Schafer said he might still try to play winter ball if he recovers quickly enough from surgery.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. He needs to/should spend at least half a season in the minors next year before coming up. We will have Church/Diaz in LF, McLouth in CF, and Heyward in RF there’s no need to have him rush back

FAIL
Its the lazy cool way of saying "I agree with this".
Fixed.

uh-huh
we should be deep enough to handle him appropriately

I think it allows...
for Schafer/Heyward to determine their own development. With Church, Diaz, and McLouth on the roster, those two can battle for a starting job in spring training, with the best man winning a job and the other going to AAA to be called up as soon as they deserve. Depth is a nice thing.

This should be a fanshot
But at any rate, it’s really bad news. I want him ready for next year, but he needs at bats. This probably means he ends up starting off at Gwinnett next year.

Hopefully this will get him to 100%.

Can’t really say I’m surprised. It’s a shame we were playing him everyday this banged up, but what other options did we have until McLouth came along?
Q: If on-base pct is so important then why don't they put it on the scoreboard? -Failcoeur
A: Because the Braves don't want to show their fans how bad you suck.

This isn't all that devastating
and possibly even encouraging. He’ll get fixed up and be ready to play at 100% next year. Whatever time he spends in the minors shouldn’t be too long, and it’ll eventually be a good problem for the Braves to have, depending on how the 2010 OF shakes up.

Assuming of course that his problems with hitting the inside fastball REALLY was due to his wrist injury. :)
by tomahawkin108 on Aug 25, 2009 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m assuming the injury was the reason. Schafer had a good spring and strong series against the Phillies. After April 10th he was a completely different player.

I don’t understand why this wasn’t done sooner. He was obviously not getting any better.
by BigG1392 on Aug 25, 2009 3:45 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Right. He should have never been playing injured.

I agree
That was my first thought. Why wasn’t this done in May or June?

Does anyone have any idea what’s involved with a surgury to repair a bone bruise?
by mdhenshaw on Aug 25, 2009 3:59 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
It has to be more than a bone bruise
I don’t think one can have a bone bruise operated on, but a bruise can lead to more serious issues that can require surgery.
by hoboken_wood on Aug 25, 2009 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I would venture to guess there is no such surgery.
At one point, I seem to recall reading something about a possible tendon problem.
I do know the wrist is a very complicated joint with alotta moving parts.
Also, I know that imaging studies are only so good, and good surgeons are thus frequently loath to be very specific until after they go in and see what the exact physiology is and confirm the exact pathology.
In other words, I’m wondering if it is going to be an explorary procedure, looking for most likely A or B, but there’s always some possibility of C or perhaps even something else.

its basically the same as what they did with Soriano’s shoulder…. they didnt know what was wrong…but they knew something was wrong.. so u crack him open and dig around and fix whatever is wrong. It’s good news in that Schafer will hopefully be back to full health… its unfortunate because he essentially wasted 3 months with a misdiagnosis.
Heyward,Hanson, and Shaffer r ready now!! Why do you think they havent signed the "right handed bat"?

Its not exactly a misdiagnosis. Instead, its called “conservative care.” Low risk, non-invasive. Then, if doesn’t help, go digging.

I believe for knees
it is the dreaded microfracture surgery — I thought that was what Beltran was possibly facing Not sure if the same applies to wrists.

Hopefully he has a successful surgery and quick recovery. Looking forward for Schafer to bounce back and be the leadoff hitter the Braves sorely need.

Does this help GA?
Does this mean we are going to be more likely to sign GA back for another yeah to keep some outfield depth? After a bad first impression, I’ve kind of come around on him this year.

Don't think so
We’ll still have a highly effective platoon in Diaz/Church, and the top prospect in all of baseball making his major-league debut. I think we’ll make a move for a power bat like Jermaine Dye (I think his option will be declined) and start the year either Dye-McLouth-Heyward or Dye-McLouth-Diaz/Church. Heyward gets the everyday RF job when he’s ready for it, no questions asked.
I think Schafer should spend the whole year in AAA to make up for lost time. He’s missed a lot of potential development because of the suspension, his hand injury in winter ball, and now this. If he shows up next year like he ought to, then we can flip McLouth for some prospects and let the Schafer era in CF finally begin in 2011.
by bravesfan91 on Aug 26, 2009 9:24 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
why would we waste our money on Dye when the diaz/church platoon can play pretty well for drastically less.
And if we did… why would we trade McLouth and not Dye, under your scenario… McLouth is signed to a great contract and is the better player. Dye would still get a good return, assuming we sign him to a decent deal.
The only thing I agree with is that Schafer should be spending as much time in AAA as possible to get him the ABs he needs to get himself on the right track.

I guess I’m still a fan of the big right-handed bat to stick between Chipper and McCann. Don’t get me wrong, I really like the Church/Diaz platoon……but I absolutely hate platoons in general. I’d rather have an everyday guy in the lineup, especially in one of the corner outfield spots.
And I’d want us to trade McLouth because he would probably bring back a bigger return than Dye would and we’d still have our RH power bat in an already lefty-heavy lineup.
by bravesfan91 on Aug 26, 2009 12:05 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
well in the world of finite resources we can’t afford an everyday player at every position (or at least not right now)… church/diaz is better than Dye…becuase it helps us resign one of maybe gonzo/soriano

we have the financial means to bring in dye at an 8-10M dollar one year deal plus one reliever (i’d prefer to trade for younger, cheaper relievers but w/e). It does mean bye to LaRoche or any other high priced 1B and Hudson in all likelihood though
by McCann's the Man on Aug 26, 2009 7:15 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
isnt that a downgrade as a team.. is Dye +1 reliever> younger reliever, LaRoche and Hudson

well it would be Dye, Glaus? or another 1st baseman, Kawakami, and Soriano vs. LaRoche, Hudson, and Gonzalez or a guy like Jason Frasor
