Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 8/23
Sorry this is going up late, I just got back from Inglourious Basterds which was pretty good, though a little unexpected in some places.
Charlotte 5, Gwinnett 10
- W. Timmons 2-4 2B, 2BB, K
- B. Jones 3-5 2B, HR(6), 5 RBI, 2BB
- T. Hudson 6IP 6H 3R 1BB 5K
Win, Win, Win for the G-Braves! I would say that Tim Hudson is getting close to ready. Everything looked good in this outing and he threw 89 pitches in his 6 innings, so he was efficient even. Also I just want to mention Brandon Jones putting up one of the best hitting lines for any Braves farmhand this season capping it with a 6th inning Grand Slam.
Mississippi 1, Chattanooga 2
- B. Hicks 2-4
- J. Heyward 0-1 3 BB
- C. Kimbrel 0.2IP 1H 1R 1BB 0K
Craig Kimbrel finally gave up his first run in AA it cost the Braves the game. He is still going to have to get his walks under control before I am completely comfortable with him moving up. Also with as little as Jason Heyward has been hitting lately, you have got to love the fact he is maintaining his plate discipline and not pressing for hits.
Frederick 3, Myrtle Beach 4 - 10 Innings
- D. Linares 2-5 HR(12), 2 RBI, K
- E. Osuna 6IP 7H 2R 1BB 5K
Donell Linares continues his August dismantling of the Carolina League. He is hitting .457 over his last 10 games with 4 of his 12 homers for the season. Now don't get me wrong, Donell Linares is a 25 year old Cuban emigré, but maybe we will get something out of him if his power develops a little more.
Savannah 5, Rome 4
- J. Campusano 2-3 2B, BB
- A. Milligan 2-4 SB(4)
- J. Teheran 5.1IP 6H 2R 3BB 3K
Maybe Julio is finding a happy median between his really good start and his two bad ones in Rome. Does anyone not have him as their #2 or 3 prospect right now? Speaking of prospects, Adam Milligan continues to hit baseballs with little regard for their immediate offspring (looking at you Mr. Met). I would also like to point out that his K rate has improved significantly as the season has gone by. He has been striking out about 18% of the time in August vs 22% in July. The problem is his BB rate has been sitting right at 6% since he was promoted. I shall keep a keen eye on these developments.
Johnson City 6, Danville 9
- O. Marval 2-4 2B, RBI, BB
- B. Rauh 2-3 3B, RBI, BB
- B. Oberholtzer 5IP 2H 0R 0BB 3K
Brett Oberholtzer made a nice bounce back after a pretty bad start (especially for him) last time around. Osman Marval has been another catcher that has showed some devent ability at the plate this season. He is 22 years old already so he would need to move fast, but he does have a 9/10 BB/K split, so maybe we should keep an eye on him too.

Hey! I saw Inglorious basterds too
Pretty good movie, even tho the story and plot get mixed around a bit. Brad Pitt is officially a badass actor.

Was is really THAT good?
I have heard such great things about it, but I can’t imagine it being best movie of the year material.

my favorite so far
I work at a movie theater part time so I see most of them, and it was easily the best of the summer. And I think it’s probably second only to Pulp as far as Tarrantino’s work goes.

No way. It’s not best movie of the year material at all. Brad Pitt really was terrific tho (and the last line of the movie truly states this.)

Gotcha. That looks good for being animated. At first, I thought it would be a baseball movie tho..

I read that book...
It’s by Dennis LeHane; the book was Shutter Island, and I think that will be the name of the movie, but I’m not sure when the movie comes out. LeHane’s books are great if you’ve never read any of them. A couple have been made into movies — Mystic River, which I have not seen, and Gone, Baby, Gone, which I did see. I’m more of a book person.
"It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone." "that Leonardo Dicaprio movie on the island with the prison and the missing prisoners"
It’s called Shutter Island, and it’s the newest film directed by Martin Scorsese. That should be “best film of the year” material, though I thought Public Enemies was quite good and the Woody Allen/Larry David collaboration of Whatever Works was absolutely fucking tremendous.

District 9 : Inglorious Basterds :: Randy Gress : Jason Heyward
Or something like that. I hope I didn’t just call Heyward a basterd in analogy language.

This summer's movies, according to me
The Hangover > The Goods > Inglorious Basterds > HP6 > District 9 > watching paint dry > re-runs of Jeff Francoeur IN MY OWN WORDS > Fast & Furious > G.I. Joe
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

Was The Goods that funny? Everyone I asked said they hadn’t seen it.
Gotta agree on the hangover tho. And unlike many, I liked Transformers 2 quite a bit.

I thought The Goods sucked. Hard.

If it's not obvious
I prefer to laugh above all anything else, so I got a big kick out of The Goods. I’m a big fan of most anything Jeremy Piven does, and seeing Ving Rhames do any role that doesn’t require him to be a militant intimidating black man with a shotgun is always entertaining.

Ok, seriously, how did anybody like Inglorious Basterds? That movie was awful. Like, bad awful. From the get go.
And all this love for Brad Pitt, I mean yeah, he was good, but have y’all seen The Assassination of Jesse James? He’s freaking amazing in that an nobody ever talks about it.

“Actually, Werner, we’re all tickled to hear you say that. Quite frankly, watching Donny beat Nazi’s to death is the closest we ever get to going to the movies. Donny! Got us a German here wants to die for his country. Oblige him.”

Looking forward to seeing Hudson pitch for the Braves.
I’d like to see Hudson come back, but preferably by declining his option and signing for less money.
Too bad B Jones isn’t a righty bat. Probably would have been called up sooner. At least he’s making a case for himself to be called up at some point this year.

Kimbrel is definitely not ready yet, but damn he throws hard. He was 94-96 with the FB and hit 97 once that inning. Lambo just got a leadoff double off of him and it’s tough to strand a runner on second with no one out.
Heyward didn’t get much to hit, though the one ball he put in play was hit pretty hard. I’m not sure how many of those walks were a product of the Lookouts pitcher being wild, or just that they didn’t want to give him anything to hit. It was ironic though, because that guy took a no-no into the sixth despite all the walks he was allowing.
Heath pitched pretty well, though he didn’t throw as hard as I had heard he did. He was like 89-92 and touched 94 maybe once or twice. He was getting swings and misses with the off-speed stuff though. He was definitely hittable, but he got the job done. Broadway impressed in his one inning of work. He was getting up 94-95 himself. It was his AA debut, and he had a solid inning.
Heyward wouldn’t sign for anyone pre-game, which some people took as him being an asshole, because he didn’t really acknowledge the autograph seekers. The only thing is, if he had starting signing he would’ve have had to turn a bunch of other people down just to have time to get warmed up… There were a lot of people there just for him. Even when Freddie came over, half the people weren’t really that interested. And apparently Jason signed for like over two hours after the game on Saturday, so I imagine he signed a bunch afterwards, but I had to be to work at six, so we didn’t stay around to find out. We’re going back Tuesday night. I was punching myself because I didn’t get anything to go get signed for yesterday’s game, but that’ll change for Tuesday.
Q: If on-base pct is so important then why don't they put it on the scoreboard? -Failcoeur
A: Because the Braves don't want to show their fans how bad you suck.

I also have a bunch of pictures on my buddy’s camera that I can get up here if anyone’s interested.

Damn, we had thought about going up there, for the Saturday game of course, but the schedule wouldn’t allow it.

Freddy Freeman out
According to Monday’s Chattanooga paper (which has lost much credibility over the years), Freddy Freeman will be shut down for the remainder of the year with a hand injury. So much for any pinch hitting help come September for the Braves.
