Game 123 Recap: Marlins 3, Braves 4

Thank the stars, a win! Why does it seem like ages since we last won a game? The Braves, behind Tommy Hanson, pulled off the game-2 victory over the Marlins. Atlanta scored all of their runs in the 4-run first and then hung on to beat Florida. Tommy Hanson held the Marlins scoreless and hitless through four innings, then ran into some 2-out trouble in the fifth. He battled through that and went on to toss a scoreless sixth and seventh -- to me, that was a real sign of maturity, to give up runs like he did, and then come out and seemingly be unfazed.

While Atlanta scored all of their runs in the first, they had plenty of opportunities to add to the lead, all of which failed to produce any runs. I thought for sure those many missed opportunities would come back to haunt us, but they didn't. That's thanks in part to Hanson, and a perfect eighth and ninth inning by Mike Gonzalez and Rafael Soriano.

Adam LaRoche was feast or famine today, but he and Yunel Escobar provided a pretty potent middle of the lineup. This batting order, save for Chipper Jones, is so young, but can show so much promise. I kind of hate myself for rooting for them, but I can't stop.

The Braves go for the series win tomorrow...

When Nasty Nate, GA, Church and Prado come back, i want this:

McLouth
Prado
Chipper
Roachy
BMac
Esco
GA
Church/Diaz

Now that, is a good lineup.

You forgot to mention also when Chipper returns.

Until then: Screw tradition. Screw seniority. We need to throw out the best lineup everyday. I say we move Chipper to the 2-hole (he is still getting on base) or below 5th.

I really doubt Bobby moves Chipper out of the 3 hole.

Bmac still better than LaRoche

Swap the two. And whenever Prado can play third, I really want Chipper to take off for at least 3-4 games to let his hands/oblique/whatever heal up. So I’d bat Esco third, at this point, and KJ 6th/7th.

by Bronn on Aug 22, 2009 10:49 PM EDT up reply actions

BMac is a better hitter than LaRoche. But Adam is a much better power hitter. Brian is a PERFECT 5th hitter; Good eye, good pop, not many K’s.

thats also what a good cleanup hitter should have.

by esadb on Aug 22, 2009 10:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t get what you’re differentiating. McCann has higher season and career OBPs and SLGs. Yes, Adam is on a hot streak of incredible proportions, but I want the better hitter always batting higher in the line-up, so he gets more opportunities to drive runs in. Most especially, the man who bats behind Chipper needs to be the best possible hitter, not just a man who’s having a ridiculous BABIP-aided burst (.474 with the Braves).

LaRoche’s two bloop shots tonight are evidence of how he’s been lucking into some basehits since coming to Atlanta.

I also don’t get that BMac is somehow a perfect 5th batter-if he’s a good hitter, does it matter where he’s batting? It’s not like LaRoche is baseball’s ideal clean-up hitter. “Good eye, good pop, not many K’s.” Well gosh, that sounds an awful lot like Rickey Henderson. We should bat him lead-off.

by Bronn on Aug 22, 2009 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I just like LaRoche there since he has more power.

BMac is still hitting into the shift the defenses are now using with him at the plate a bit too much. I’d love to see him go the other way (or try to) more than he has been.

He has been better at the plate lately which is good to see.

you need to put KJ in there instead of Prado.

Good and Close Game

I must be some sort of a masochist but I love a close cliffhanging game. One where you don’t know who is going to win till the last out. I don’t think Ole Chipper will stay in his slump for long, he’ll do what he needs to do.

39 games left and are in the race.
Hope Bobby Cox finds (or takes enough instruction to find) one or more consistently winning lineups, very soon.

to his defense, 3/4 of his OF is hurt

I dont care who ya are, if your starting CF, LF and 1 of your 2 platoon RF are out, its gonna be tough to put together a good lineup.

Keep Looking Up

Look at the damage to the Angels(sorry,I’m a lifelong fan). They have managed to come back and have the 2nd best record in the majors. Atlanta can do the same, just need some inspiration is all.

Cardinals vs. Angels. Mark it down.

But lets see how September goes.

I Think You Are Right

I doubt the stinkin’ Yankees get past the Angels, who have pretty much beat them every time they’ve gone against each other. The Cards? Probably, But we could still do it,it’s not out of the realm of probabilities. I must admit, rather the Cards than the Phillies.

i just think

the Cards have the best rotation of anyone besides the Braves and maybe the Giants, the best closer of anyone, and a lineup that rakes.

As long as Boston is out

The Angels have a chance. Despite the records, and how dominant the Yankees are this year, they will have something to prove if they get paired up with Anaheim. The Angels have really owned the Yankees in the playoffs ever since 2002, and any educated Yankee fans has to realize that by now.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

Tommy Hanson doesnt even get a mention on SportsCenter. Meanwhile, they spend 10 minutes analyzing the f;ing Yankees/Sox game. If Tommy was on the Sox or Yankees, they would have half the show designated for him.

ESPN is totally focused on the Yankees and Red Sox. Are they trying to alienate most baseball fans? Look at the coverage and praise they put on those 2 teams and totally ignore so much of the good things other teams do! Pisses me off!

Well with the rise of the MLB channel and NFL,NBA and NHL, plus everything else I don’t see much of a future for focusing on one or two rivalries,ESPN is looking for some drop in revenues.
