Around SBN: Following UFC 146 Loss, Jason 'Mayhem' Miller 'Done' in UFC

Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 8/19

Alright I am finally back off of vacation. Lets get this thing going.

Gwinnett 2, Norfolk 5

  • G. Blanco 2-4
  • B. Conrad 2-4 K
  • B. Jones 1-4 2B

A rare loss for the Braves in August. Gwinnett is actually a .5 game back for the best record in the league right now and has all but locked up a playoff spot. I wonder who we will see get the call come September? If the G-Braves are in the playoffs we may not see a whole bunch of callups. And would that make Heyward more likely to get the call or would they put him in Gwinnett to get some playoff 'experience'? Questions that will be answered! In September.

Mobile 2, Mississippi 6

  • M. Young 2-2 RBI, 2 BB, 2 SB(33), CS(14)
  • J. Heyward 0-4 BB, K
  • C. Kimbrel 1IP 0H 0R 2BB 0K

Jason Heyward has found himself in probably the worst slump he has been in since signing his contract. Other than the homer he hit last night he has done very little over the last 10 games and only has 1 multi hit game in that time. In other news I love Matt Young and wish for him to get a real shot above Mississippi. I also don't know the last time that Craig Kimbrel didn't strike out at least 1 batter in an outing.

Myrtle Beach 0, Kinston 3

  • C. Johnson 1-2 BB, K
  • J. Thompson 6IP 9H 2R 1BB 5K

So very bad.

Charleston 0, Rome 2

  • S. Moody 1-2 K
  • M. Kennelly 1-3 RBI
  • D. Delgado 6.2IP 2H 0R 4BB 5K

A solid outing from Dimaster Delgado in this one. His walks were higher than I like but when you only give up 2 hits then it really doesn't matter a whole lot I guess. I am guessing that Randall Delgado was skipped this time through since his turn would have been yesterday, which was an off day.

Danville - Off

GCL Braves 2, GCL Yankees 0 - 7 Innings

  • D. Falcon 1-3 2B, K
  • J. Hanson 1-3 2B
  • C. Brewer 6IP 2H 0R 0BB 11K

Caleb Brewer put together one of the better pitching lines we have seen from any Braves hurler this season. He is 20 years old and is probably a little advanced for the level, but you still have to been impressed. He was drafted in 2007 and pitched in the GCL that season but did not pitch last year from what I guess whould be an injury (though I am not 100%), and is now back this season in the GCL. He did get a pretty large bonus for coming out of the 14th RD so he might be someone to keep an eye on.

GCL Yankees 6, GCL Braves 3 - 7 Innings

  • A. Odreman 1-3 HR(9)
  • J. Whitmer 1-3 2B

Game 2!

I totally agree

about Matt Young. And I like Thompson’s line (looks like 8 of the hits were singles) but I guess even Randy Gress couldn’t bail him out tonight.

OMG

With all the cuts we have been making with washed up prospects I think you should add that jason kid… Um… Oh yea jason heyward! He’s a nobody let’s just cut our losses! Haha jp hope he breaks out of this minor slump soon and propell the G braves to postseason glory

Is there any word on when Mike Minor’s first start will be?

thanks

other question, is what do you see as Minor’s ceiling?

Personally probably no higher than a 3, but what makes him a solid choice to me is he probably isn’t going to be lower than a 4 or 5. Think Ricky Romero in Toronto.

That's a great comparison

Brewer

Brewer has been one of the best kept secrets of the organization. I have also been unable to find out what happened to Brewer last year. During the 2008 season the online roster listed him as active—but he never pitched.

In any event, he has been awesome—in fact, he has arguably the best numbers of anyone in the system.

I am sure that he starts at Rome next year and he will give Teheran, Rasmus, Oberholzer, Masters, Lopez and anyone else a run for their money.

Have you seen him pitch?

About all I know about him was that he was hitting 96 before we signed him. This guy definitely intrigues me.

Q: If on-base pct is so important then why don't they put it on the scoreboard? -Failcoeur

A: Because the Braves don't want to show their fans how bad you suck.

ETA for Kimbrel?

After being so damn inconsistent the past year and half, it looks like hes finally figuring it out. Im gonna guess mid-season 2010.

It looks like the organization is interested in moving him quickly, despite what remain in my eyes some disturbing control problems. I guess what we do in the offseason with Gonzo and Sori would really affect his progression to ATL, but I’m sure he won’t be handed the closer’s role out of spring training.

I’d feel a lot more comfortable if he could cut down his walks.

by VivaLosBravos on Aug 20, 2009 1:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Inconsistent?

The guy has been promoted through 4 levels in a year and two months and has a career 2.03 ERA with 15.3 K/9 and 4.6 H/9 to show for it. Just because he hasn’t found a more traditional means of getting hitters out doesn’t change the fact that he’s been wildly successful. And now he’s having a very successful AA promotion. Kimbrel is way ahead of most of the guys drafted around him, and has been nothing shy of a major success for us so far.

I meant inconsistent since he hasn’t stayed at one level for very long and has gotten promoted or demoted a few times this past season.

Also re Kimbrel

is his slider nasty? has it improved this year? Because I read a report recently that it’s break was kind of loose, but that was written before the season.

I’ve heard his slider is nearly unhittable and it is what leads to most of his Ks

fantastic, thanks.

His FB/SL combo is nothing shy of “closer quality” stuff. If he were 3 inches taller, he’d probably be a top-100 prospect as a starter.

Here’s some pre-draft video of him from ’08.

If he were three inches taller, he’d still be short.

So you’re saying that 5’11" listing is generous?

I can’t wait to see all the corny nicknames that would be inspired if him, Pruneda and Medlen all made up the back our ’pen.

They list him at 5’11"? Wow, must be nice. Yeah, I think Medlen is the tallest of those three, and Pruneda is definitely the shortest. We could call it the Bite-Sized Bullpen.

It’s like we specialize in under-sized relief prospects.

has 9 HR on just 11 XBH. Pretty weird.

whats funny is I think 6 of them came in the first 6 games of the season.

Gwinnett call ups...

with many of the key players, there are call ups waiting just a step below…
Cuban B—Freddie Freeman
Brandon Jones—Jason Heyward
Greg White—Matt Young
Luis Valdez—Craig Kimbrel
Clint Sammons—JC Boscan

by Mr. Sanchez on Aug 20, 2009 9:12 AM EDT reply actions

so they are going to break up a playoff caliber team in Gwinnett and replace them with a bunch of call ups? I don’t think so.

by yondaime4 on Aug 20, 2009 10:39 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm not saying they will...

just that decent players are sitting a step below.

And let’s wonder what a major league organization cares about more, the big club making the playoffs or their AAA affiliate winning the IL?

by Mr. Sanchez on Aug 21, 2009 9:30 AM EDT up reply actions

I think Freddie and probably JayHey both start next season at AA.. Craig Kimbrel probably finishes out this season with AAA and makes the big team next season.

- I miss Spooneybarger :(

by Mighty Healthy on Aug 20, 2009 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Im pretty sure we bring up at least a couple of relievers Valdez being one and im not sure who the other would be. Maybe Gomez or Perez?

Other than that we will prob see Conrad and Sammons.

The rest I think will stay. We will already have enough OF’ers with McLouth, Church, Diaz, Anderson and Gorecki with Infante being able to play out there as well.

Our infield will be set with Infante and Conrad as utility men. Conrad has actually been getting some games in at 1B in AAA so he could cover 1B or 2B if needed. Prado/Infante could always play 3B and KJ still can cover 2B.

On Andy Otero...

I know a lot of people around here are interested in learning a bit more about him… I don’t know what the rules around here are in regards to linking to leaked insider stuff, but it sounds like his stuff matches his performance. Google it for yourself.

By all accounts, it looks like the barely 17 yr old lefty has been the most impressive pitcher in the Dominican.
