Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 8/2
Gwinnett 4, Columbus 2 - 10 Innings
- G. Blanco 1-4 2B, BB, CS(3)
- C. Sammons 1-4 HR(7), 2 RBI
- J. Parr 5.1IP 6H 2R 0BB 0K
A nice come from behind win for the Braves in this one as Clint Sammons hit the game winning homer in the top of the 9th and Luis Valdez finished the game with two perfect innings to end the game. James Parr was solid but unexceptional as he didn't walk anyone or strike anyone out in his 5+ innings. We did pretty well going against Hector Rondon, who is apparently a pretty good prospect in the Indians system.
Montgomery 4, Mississippi 5
- M. Young 2-5 3B
- W. Cabrera CS(4)
- T. Jones 2-3 2B, RBI, BB
- K. Cofield 5IP 5H 1R 4BB 2K
Another come from behind win! Mississippi was behind 4-2 going into the bottom of the 6th inning and scored 1 run there and then 2 more in the bottom of the 8th on back to back doubles from Travis Jones and Phillip Britton. Kyle Cofield was pretty solid in 5 innings of work and he has been for most of the year besides a 3 game run between June and July. Well nothing else interesting to report from this game.

Asheville @ Rome - RAIN
Danville 2, Bristol 1
- M. Jones 2-4 2B, K
- RSF 1-4 2B, K
- T. Stovall 5IP 2H 1R 6BB 3K
Good Lord Tyler Stovall, get your walks under control. I don't know how this guy has been this good with this many walks. I guess you could argue whether he has been good or not, but he has been limiting runs. Either way, the walks have got to come down. Cory Rasmus did pitch 3 innings of 1 hit ball and struck out 4 guys. He has been pretty solid since coming back this year. Also David Hale was pulled after 0.1 of an inning while walking one and allowing a hit.

Wonder when Rasmus moves up...
he doesn’t have a lot of innings in his career, but at his age, sooner or later he needs to get out of rookie ball. With 25 innings so far, why not move him up to Rome?
And also, Heyward homered. Can’t help but think he and Freeman are playing in Gwinnett if they’re still playing in September, letting them keep getting at bats and allowing the big club to bring up Canizares and Blanco or maybe Brandon Jones once rosters can expand.

if heyward goes anywhere in Sept it will be in Atl. Freeman may get the call to Gwinnett if Canizares moves to Atlanta, but he hasn’t been half as dominant as Heyward has in Mississippi. Rasmus is probably still considered to be rehabbing.

thats true..
i want to see some HR power develop out of Freeman before he gets the call to the big club. Heyward is already flashing his, so I see him being a little less advanced than Heyward.

Funny you say that since Heyward hit 11 last year and Freeman hit 19. For some reason he just hasn’t had it this year. Though he has been hitting plenty of doubles (He was leading MB in doubles when he was promoted).

Heyward...
I think that’d depend. With Anderson, McLouth, Diaz, and Church taking most of the at bats in the OF, unless Heyward was going to get thrown to the wolves in right, there’s no reason to have him on the bench of the big club when he could be getting to the plate in Gwinnett. May as well let him keep working there. If an injury happens I can see him getting the call, but if there’s no path to playing time now, why start his clock early when Jones or Blanco could just as easily ride the pine and he can still get at bats, in crucial situations, at a level he hasn’t played before.
And while I understand the Rasmus still rehabbing sentiment, my point was that it seems with the # of innings he’s logged so far that he’s healthy enough to make a move up. He’s now at 27 innings with very good #s, especially if you take out that one bad start and look exclusively at his relief appearances. Will he get to Rome this year or do they want him to go a complete summer with no setbacks?

There is no way that Heyward gets the call and doesn’t start within a couple of days. It would be a complete waste if we were to call him up, and not give him consistent playing time. I think we should either give him a chance to start right now, or leave him in Mississippi.

Heyward hits 2 run HR and is snubbed.
We are becoming spoiled!
;-)
Btw, local JXN (MS) sportswriter Rick Cleveland descibed Heyward as “Darryl Strawberry, except with good sense.” Appears pretty accurate. (FWIW, Strawberry also played his AA ball in JXN, for the old Jackson Mets, and a much younger Cleveland covered him back in the day.)

Stovall
He has never had any kind of problems with walks before this season. What are they seeing as a reason? Some kind of mental deal or just having an “off-summer.” Still pretty good #‘s but you have got to think that he is in Rome if not for his BB’s.
