Open Thread 8/19: Braves at Mets
Atlanta Braves at New York Mets, Aug 19, 2009 7:10 PM EDT
I plan on spending most of this game trying to avert my eyes from what may possibly be an utter disaster. There's some lineup tinkering going on tonight.

we need
10 straight wins
Baseball is a game where a curve is an optical illusion, a screwball can be a pitch or a person, stealing is legal and you can spit anywhere you like except in the umpire's eye or on the ball.
James Patrick Murray
recently, we had a nice run, winning 5 straight.
we need another 5 straight and then at some point in the remaining 43 games of the season, another 5 straight, and the rest of the time, we need to play over .500.
that we keep us in the playoff hunt and give us a legit shot at a 90 win season.
honestly
we should get at least 8 straight with the Santana game being a close one. we have the advantage pitching wise going into the florida series and the one after that is vs. SD.
from there we need to take 2 from the Phils.

i mean
that is one of them. Thats like putting McCann in only against lefties.

Its an even .200
against righties

You know
Even if the Braves dont make the play offs i feel better about this team going into next year just because of Frank Wren.
The guy has shown that he has the balls to make us the best team even if it means he deals with a public outcry.
The Franceur, Smoltz and Glavine situations show that he isnt afraid to do whatever it takes for us to compete.
The McLouth deal showed how serious he is to go after players he wants and knows will help us. Instead of us shuffling Blanco out in CF like last year he went and made a deal. He dealt Kotchman for the player that has been keeping us alive (LaRoche) and some how got Church for Franceur.
I honestly am very excited about this team going forward for years to come.
BTW, I wasn’t here for last night’s game, but did anyone else thing Bobby kind of let Derek Lowe out to dry in the 4th inning?
i think
it was a misjudgement and by the time he Medlen was warmed up it was a bit to late.

Who does KJ have to blow to get int he lineup? I’m not loving Infante at 2B. Hope Church can get some revenge on his former team. We DAMN sure need to win this one with Johan tomorrow. I never thought we’d drop this series.
If Dunn walks 30 fewer times, he'll drive in 15 more runs. This is thanks to the scientifically proven formula: RBI = (this is nonsense) (I made it all up).
Here's a stat: Wins as manager: Dusty Baker, 1,162; Bill James, 0.
+1 on KJ

But let’s fucking go! I’m tired of winning one and then losing one. Time for a winning streak.

My take is we need a win badly, tonight.
Either the bats need to show up and generate a bunch of runs or JJ needs to give us a stopper performance. Or both.
Losing 3 out of the last 4 has hurt the team’s psyche and we gotta stop the bleeding asap.
According to Fangraphs, Kelly Johnson has been worth $2.8 million this season so far, which is his salary. Whuda thunk it?
That's mostly
because he has a good glove at a semi-premium position.

You are a Troll! I went back over your comments! We caught you commenting for the Phillies when we were playing them!
Also, in the game threads you said you were not rooting for the Braves, you were a Cubs fan, you just wanted to get on our site to check the weather. The Phillies are fed up with you and so am I. I have no use for someone with the stupidity to come on the Braves site and say they are rooting against us! No use! I mentioned you had listed that you were a Cub fan on your profile. Then you went and changed it to look like you are a Braves fan. Anyone can go and look through your comments and see you for what you are a Troll!!!

thats EXACTLY why we won the trade.

You're right
But anytime you swap players in the division, seeing ur opponent get nearly buried is a reeeeal big ppluus. =]
Considering their record before the trade
was 40-44, I’d say they haven’t been noticeably better or worse.
Seeing as this is the time where Medlen comes in usually, anyone else think he should be used in more high leverage situations. He is carving guys up
I believe
we will see Soriano. Apparently he is available now after having a few days off because of his shoulder
I’d rather him get the rust off with a big lead than with a tight situation that could be the case tomorrow.
Great interview!
We better flipping take Hudson’s option for next year. I will be an extremely disappointed fan if we don’t.
Basically, he has two more rehab starts with a 6-inning/90 pitch limit.
He’s felt really good pitching, he would like to improve on finishing off batters, most of his hits he’s given up have been with 2 strikes. His arm is feeling really good and the only pain he has is the normal day-after a start soreness.
Then he talked about how he was helping Matty D with his oppo-swing in the cage, and it paid off.
Finally, he mentioned how the vibe around this team has been the best its been in the last 3-4 years.
Also, he said he doesn’t know what his role will be when he gets back, but he’s willing to accept whatever will make the team better.
would it be a completely stupid idea....
to put huddy in the rotation (assuming he is his old self) and make Lowe the closer?
Other than the fact that we’d have an extremely over-paid closer, I wouldn’t care much. But I would say Kawakami would be better suited for that role.
i guess. i mean, we’re going to pay the money either way. And Lowe has been a closer in the past. Also, I think (without looking at stats) that KK has prob been the better starter recently.
Consider this
Kawakami’s salary is around $8 mil, Soriano&Gonzo are around $10 combined. Financially, it wouldn’t hurt to take Hudson’s option, and use Kawakami/Medlen/Moylan as the major 3 in the bullpen. Also, I’m sure Valdez and Kimbrel could be players in the bullpen next year, and if Manny Acosta lives up to potential, he could be very good out of the bullpen too.
hahaha
if manny acosta lives up to his potential…
on a more serious note, i would be more concerned about kk making a switch to the BP…has he ever been a closer before? thats a rough transition to make in your late 30s.
Also, what diff does the salary make? I mean, ideally you wouldnt want to pay your closer what Lowe is making. But we’re paying these guys no matter what — wouldnt it make more sense to put them in the most logical positions, regardless of salary? IF the question becomes who should go to the pen — Lowe or KK — I think Lowe is the better answer right this moment and i dont see how salary changes that.
A bit clearer… if we don’t resign Gonzo/Soriano, we’ll shed about $10 million, and if we ditch GA and use Heyward, there’s another $2.5 million. So basically what I meant was, we can use Kawakami/Medlen/Moylan for around the same price that we used Soriano/Gonzo, and possibly just as effective. So we’d still have enough to take on Hudson’s salary.
As for what their roles are, I don’t really know, just saying we have just as many effective pieces if we let Soriano and Gonzo go and use the pieces we already have.
ahh, ok
you were responding to something else i said down below…i thought you were responding to moving Lowe to the pen this season when Huddy comes back, not whether or not we should take Huddy’s option next year.
When talking about roles, i meant this season, not next, bc Soriano/Gonzo have been unreliable lately and Lowe seems to be struggling as a starter.
does anyone remember how much it costs?
i remember it being expensive..id love to have him, but we might be better off spending the cash on a bat if we can
quite a bit of cash
considering we already have a good rotation that i believe is completely under contract

So basically, no one on earth can beat the Phillies.
Nats help no one.
Reds leaving us with hope.
Astros are teasing us.
Yeah, i was kinda hoping Haren wouldnt get blasted tonight tho.
And the Nats better score before the 9th, cause Houston Street has been money this season. I saw some stat that said no runner had touched 2nd base safely when he’s been in the game since mid July.

LOL MattyD
He reminds me of Hunter Pence.
He’ll fall down swinging at a ball a foot over his head…and then hit one to the upper deck.

Wish we could play like this the rest of the season!
Geez, that would be fun!

Update:
Rockies up 4-3 over the Nats in the 7th.
Nats have runners on 1st and 3rd w/ 2 outs. Dunn up.

i really like Rossy. He saved us earlier in the year when BMac was out. Corky Miller and Clint Sammons were horrible for us.

Ugh
Dunn strikes out on a fastball right down the middle. Rockies still lead by 1.

Braves love screwing up their X W/L
Braves’ X W/L is already 2 games better than their current record. Some quick math predicts that, following tonight, they’ll be 4 games behind their X W/L.
Great Game!

Oh my god
ESPN is pretty much drooling over the Phuckers right now. Give me a break. They beat the DBacks. Way to go.
I cant wait til if/when they make the playoffs, they need the bullpen to come thru and Brad Lidge blows it again.

way to not reply correctly, Thrashed88.
And thanks? Do you want me to praise the Phillies for beating one of the 4 or 5 worst teams in baseball?
