Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 8/17

I will be the first to say congratulations to Nationals fans for signing Stephen Strasburg. He signed at the deadline for a record $15.67 million over 4 years and I think most people will say the Nationals did amazingly well to get him for that. I expected him to get at least $20 million.

Pawtucket 2, Gwinnett 3

  • G. Blanco 2-2 2B, 2 RBI
  • B. Canizares 2-4 RBI, K
  • J. Reyes 6.2IP 9H 2R 0BB 5K

Gwinnett's run to the playoffs is becoming pretty impressive. They are 12-4 for the month of August largely behind some of the best pitching in the league (3rd in ERA and leading the league Ks for the season). JoJo Reyes has been solid for the Braves since his return from injury but his K rate is way down from last season at AAA. Reid Gorecki has been recalled to Atlanta so we will finally get to see him in action.

Mobile 4, Mississippi 1

  • J. Heyward 0-4 K
  • E. Campbell 1-4 HR(5), 3K

As we all have probably noticed Jason Heyward has fallen off a little recently (he is hitting .231 in his last 10 games) but even for the month he is posting a .960 OPS. I am interested to see how he comes around out of this and what kind of adjustments he can make.

Myrtle Beach - Mercifully has an Off Day

Rome 2, Lake County 19

  • L. Sumoza 4-4 HR(3), 2 RBI
  • J. Teheran 5IP 10H 6R 2BB 4K

I am going out on a limb and saying this is the worst beating any Braves affiliate has received this season. Julio Teheran just fell apart in the 6th inning. He hit a batter to lead off the inning then allowed 3 consecutive doubles and then was pulled. The crazy thing is Lake County only scored in 3 innings.

Danville 5, Elizabethton 9

  • M. Weaver 3-4 RBI
  • B. Oberholtzer 5IP 6H 5R 1BB 6K

We have had a couple of poor pitching outings tonight from guys who are normally pretty good. Teheran can be forgiven because of his age, I guess Oberholtzer was due at some point as well.

GCL Braves 3, GCL Phillies 2

  • J. Hanson 1-3 2B, BB, K
  • F. De Los Santos 1-2 2B, RBI, BB, K

Is 19 year old Jake Hanson making a bid to be our top 3B prospect? He is posting an .860 OPS this season with good pop and excellent plate discipline. The only issue I see so far is that his K rate is a little high. But at 19 years old he has 16 walks in less than 100 AB. I'll take that from just about anyone.

Thank yodaime14, I hadn’t heard about Strasburg until I saw this. So, for all that blustering, Boras didn’t change the draft, and the kid ended up getting less than a quarter of what they were originally asking for. Well done Natinals. Curious to see if the kid ends up in Potomac, cause if so I’ll have to scoot up there. Even though he’s already a prick to the fans.

Also curious to see who the Braves promote to Gwinnett to take Gorecki’s spot. They’re making a playoff run, so they need somebody. Is it gonna be Heyward, or maybe Matt Young, who should have been there all year.

i say you have to give it to Young. I am still baffled that he has been in AA all season. I think it affected him at the beginning of the season too.

i agree. what can the guy learn or improve on in AA ball?

I didn’t know much about Matt Young before last weekend but he did look very comfortable in the outfield and he seems to have great speed. He made some impressive catches in center going back on long balls. I also noticed he was the first player out on the field in both games I attended last weekend. That should be some indication of his work ethic.

Also, Matt Purke, one of the guys people think we should have drafted, didn’t sign. And, I may be wrong on this, so feel free to correct me, Alex White, another guy some folks said we should draft, didn’t sign either. Personally, I’d rather have Mike Minor than, well, nothing.

white did sign
Only guys that didn’t were Purke and Lavon Washington.

Yeah, I was just coming to correct myself. Must learn to read better.

Crow didn’t sign either, but he doesn’t have to. I guess he doesn’t want to play baseball for a living. Maybe he should call Josh Fields and see how that 6.48 ERA is working out for him.

Doesn’t Crow have an extended signing period since he was in an independent league last season?

A man walks into a meat shoppe and goes to the counter. The cashier asks, "Thinking about buying some meat?". The man replied, "No, I'm going to buy meat, I was thinking about punanny."

yes, he and tanner scheppers. I fully expect crow to sign too, i mean i can’t see the kid turning down 3M knowing he’s definitely not getting that next year.

matzek signed for 3.9M though, that hurts. and shelby miller at 2.9M, along with Gibson at 1.8M.

that hurt me to

I would have loved to get Matzek

Actually

Boras came out and said they were never looking for 50 mil but more like low 20’s

by drumzalicious on Aug 18, 2009 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions

And they still didn’t get it.

Im gonna go ahead and say

this is probably the worst night for all our minor league teams in a long, long time. Teheran and Oberholtzer got killed. Heyward hasnt done anything in a week or so. 4 of our 5 teams scored 4 runs or less. And Rome got destroyed.

Good thing the Braves won, or it would be a horrible day throughout the organization.

ya

when I checked the box scores earlier, Sumoza’s line was the only one that really impressed me.

Pete Rose was actually banned from baseball for teaching Jeff Francoeur how to play. He made up the gambling stuff to hide his shame.

Heyward

After last two-singles game, his AVG falls off from 0.422 to 0.364.He is no longer a beast,I am a little disappointed. He needs more PA at AA and AAA,don’t rush him please!

by Go Braves on Aug 18, 2009 1:01 AM EDT reply actions

no longer a beast? he has better numbers than 80% of the guys at AA…and he’s only been there a month and a half.

Going to Rome Saturday

For those who know, believe it or not, I haven’t been all year. So I’m clueless – whose spot should come in the rotation?

Also going to Gwinnett Sunday.

by secondbass on Aug 18, 2009 5:27 AM EDT reply actions

you will probably get Teheran or the relievers they have been running out there.

by yondaime4 on Aug 18, 2009 10:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Will Heyward play in the AFL? Do we know who else will be going?

If Dunn walks 30 fewer times, he'll drive in 15 more runs. This is thanks to the scientifically proven formula: RBI = (this is nonsense) (I made it all up).

Here's a stat: Wins as manager: Dusty Baker, 1,162; Bill James, 0.

hmm

If he goes you will prob see Freeman go with him.

by drumzalicious on Aug 18, 2009 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions

he better go to the AFL!
