Open Thread 8/16: Phillies at Braves
Philadelphia Phillies at Atlanta Braves, Aug 16, 2009 8:05 PM EDT
The Braves managed to grasp a win out of the clutches of a loss, as role players Matt Diaz and Omar Infante came up big over Phillies closer Brad Lidge. Atlanta will look to earn another victory today and both win the series and come out of the weekend fewer games back in the division than when it started.
The Braves will send their ace, which is no small compliment on this team, to the mound in tonight's rubber match. Javier Vazquez has won his last 5 decisions, spanning his last 6 starts, and is coming off of a dominating performance over the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he allowed just 1 earned run over 8 innings, while striking out 7.
The Phils will counter will relatively young lefty J.A. Happ, who prefers to have those initials pronounced 'Jay', which is, well, baffling. Happ has been very good for Philadelphia this season, particularly since moving into the rotation. His last start against the Cubs he allowed just 2 earned runs over 6 innings, which was a nice followup to a complete game shutout of the Rockies in his previous start.
After scoring only 6 runs in the first two games of the series, the Braves will need to get the offense going quickly and silmultanteously keep the young pitcher opposing them off of his game, and allow their own veteran starter to work his way into a healthy groove. This is easier said than done though, especially since it looks as if the Braves will be without both starting centerfielder Nate McLouth and second baseman Martin Prado.

I wait to hear Miller's and Morgan's insight
Brave’s right fielder, “Matt Dee-Az”, and this lineup is ALL about Chipper and his play…..blah…blah…blah
shit shit shit
stuck in traffic on my way home from phoenix. i really really wanna be home in time.

lineup
1. Infante, 2B
2. Prado, 1B
3. Chipper, 3B
4. McCann, C
5. Escobar, SS
6. Anderson, LF
7. Diaz, RF
8. Church, CF
9. Vazquez
I’m sure Laroche is psyched to be back in Atlanta so bobby can put him in a part time platoon. I’m just about sick of the demand that Prado be in the lineup everyday. He’s not that good.
"Ohhhh Shit."-Bobby Cox, 3/28/09
He's not that good, but he owns lefties.
On the other hand, I think I’d still rather see LaRoche playing everyday. Seriously, he’s an everyday 1B, even if he hits lefties worse.
What's with the hate on Prado?
If anyone needs to sit/take a game off, it’s Anderson or as you guys refer to him, FUGA. Not only that would make the offense better, but the defense would improve with Infante in left.
my mistake
My comment was intended for 10-4 saying Prado isn’t that good. Hell you can make the case that since Prado’s bat has been in the everyday lineup, the offense is no longer looked as the team’s weakness.
thanks for the lineup
happ is a lefty tho…

True
But I think the better baseball move would be to rest the 37 year old outfielder in favor of the 30 year old LaRoche.
who do you put in the outfield instead? I’m guessing Kelly Johnson would be the best option, right?

2. Anderson, LF
3. Chipper, 3B
4. McCann, C
5. Esco, SS
6. Diaz, RF
7. LaRoche, 1B
8. Church, CF
9. Vasquez
apparently “Prado experienced more dizziness when he went in the batting cage to take some swings.”
You got to be kidding....
Anderson batting 2nd?
found this line
here’s FlipFlops’ line batting 2nd in his career
66 Hits in 225 AB’s
.293 AVG
.331 OBP
.396 SLG%
.726 OPS
"flipflops"
i dont get it. I keep hearing him called that but i dont know why. someone explain please
NCChopper's hubby
coined it I believe, by saying he ran like a 9 month pregnant woman wearing flipflops
Note to Prado….try hydrating

Interestingly
GA is hitting lefties better than righties this year. At least, in terms of BA and getting on base-his power comes against RHPs. That has not been the case for his career, though.

What an idiot....
Well if that’s the case, then I’d still like to see Anderson sit this one out. You still have kelly just rotting on the bench and can always put the versatile Infante in left.
……oh well
Enjoy the game, America. Whatever the line-up really is, I’m there.

Francoeur quote on new helmet models
"No, I am absolutely not wearing that," Mets right fielder Jeff Francoeur said with a laugh after seeing a prototype, as if he were being asked to put a pumpkin on his head. "I could care less what they say, I’m not wearing it. There’s got to be a way to have a more protective helmet without all that padding. It’s brutal. We’re going to look like a bunch of clowns out there."

Dude has been brilliant this season. Guys makes bad pitches sometimes and good hitters like Howard capitalize. It happens.
But to imply that he’s choking just because he’s made a couple mistakes (like all pitchers) is foolish.

He’s looked like the real deal to everyone except the Hanson fan club (both the pitcher and the boy band) and if you arent willing to admit that after tonight you’re just making a fool of yourself.
He is on 2 of my fantasy teams. I like him. but, he is pitching above his head. If you cannot admit that, then you may be the one kidding yourself.

Some of you are sad
A few of you have been just completely giving up on this team just because of the fact that we are currently losing this game. Taking it as a sign that our team really cant compete.
Lets not remember the fact that the last two games were very well played games and very close.
Tonight Javy made TWO mistake pitches that were both punished by Howard.
We also have our Starting CF’er with a hamstring injury. Our 3B is dealing with a continuous oblique injury. Both of those players are trendsetters for our offense and we have still been winning.
I mean if your going to support the team support them dont give up at the first sign of weakness. We still have a very real chance. Even with us losing tonight if we beat Arizona tomorrow we are back at 4 games out of the NL East and 3 out of the NL Wild Card. If we win those numbers turn to 3 and 2 out.
This team has the ability to compete. We finally have a bottom half of the line up that doesnt suck and our rotation is doing amazingly well and Hudson will be returning in September to either give the bullpen some rest or help out our rotation. We are still in the thick of this, don’t give up so easily. If you ARE one of those kinds of fans just please go watch the football season or something instead of bringing the negativity here.

he needs an off day
figured he would have gotten it today since you know . . . Ross is RH and bobby loves his platoon matchups!!

We need to work on getting the ball down, seriously…
"My God! Good news fans, the Braves are showing signs of life for the first time in weeks. As a matter of fact, they appear to be beating the crap out of each other."

this game
is just as much the offenses fault as it is Javy’s two pitches. There is no excuse for some of the AB’s we have put up against a guy who obviously didnt have his best stuff.

like how Happ has thrown a “good game” and Pedro is a good pitcher again, and how Lidge’s blown saves are Utley’s fault

he's trying to be a typical #4
we dont need him to hit HR’s we need him to play his game. He has altered his approach somewhat in that spot. It is the only reason why i would like to consider LaRoche there. He isnt the better hitter but his approach works a little better in that spot IMO

At this point
I think Laroche at #4 would make sense
by UltimaParadox on Aug 17, 2009 12:11 AM EDT up reply actions
His defense has been terrible too.
I think he has given up 16 stolen bases in 12 games this month. And a few of those advanced to third on his throwing error.
for some reason
Even tho Ross was dynamite for us when Heap was on sidelined Bobby hasnt really been utilizing him as much as i thought. Ross would be nice in the lineup tonight to give Heap a nice day off. a simple line up of
Church CF
Infante 2B
Chip
LaRoche
Esco
GA LF
Ross
Diaz RF
