Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 8/12

Durham 1, Gwinnett 2

  • W. Timmons 3-3 BB
  • B. Jones 1-5 2 RBI
  • J. Reyes 6IP 7H 0R 2BB 5K

Gwinnett stretches their lead to 2 games in the division and are really getting hot at the right time against the right people. Wes Timmons has posted an .803 OPS this season, largely on the strength of an OBP of .434. The guy might be one of the most polished hitters in the minors but he just can't generate any power at all. If he could generate ever 10 homer power he could be a useful player, but he has 0.

Mississippi 1, Montgomery 4

  • M. Young 1-4 2B
  • J. Heyward 0-3 BB, K
  • R. Reynoso 6IP 6H 4R 2BB 3K

Not much brewing for the Braves in this one. Jason Heyward's AVG has finally dipped below .400. He is a huge disappointment. Ryne Reynoso has been a consistent and dependable starter for Mississippi this season. He is currently 4th in the league in ERA and second in innings pitched. He doesn't strike a bunch of guys out or generate ground balls, but he gets men out with deception and off speed stuff. He is a master of keeping guys off balance by changing speeds. With our crazy pitching depth I don't know where he is going to fit in the long run, but I think he could fill a swing man role in the majors if Medlen doesn't lock down the position long term.

Salem 16, Myrtle Beach 2

  • C. Miles 3-3 CS(7)

Wow, the Pelicans pitching just got hammered. Benino Pruneda gave up 5 runs in 0.2 innings of work. For the month of August they are 2-8. Cole Miles has been red hot this month however as he has hit .429 through the first 10 this month. Not bad for a guy that started the season with an OPS under .600.

Rome 2, Hagerstown 1 - Game 1 - 8 Innings

  • Y. Campusano 1-3 2B, BB, K
  • C. Culver 1-4 HR(4), K
  • J. Teheran 7IP 4H 1R 0BB 2K

Julio Teheran's second start in Rome went a bit better than his first one though it was atypical in some aspects. He got 6 groundball outs vs 13 flyballs which is reverse of his tendencies. Also you can see his Ks were down a little though they have been a little erratic from game to game. What I do love about his is his ability to go deep into games at the age of 18.

Rome 4, Hagerstown 2 - Game 2 - 7 Innings

  • A. Milligan 2-3 BB
  • C. Culver 1-4 2 RBI, K

Rome is pulling the opposite move of the Pelicans. They are 8-1 in August and it has mostly been because of their pitching staff who have not allowed more than 4 runs in any game (the loss). The problem though is that the offense has scored more than 4 runs in only 2 of their games. The sad thing is there is almost no chance of them making the playoffs as they are still 7.5 games out of first place.

Danville 4, Princeton 2

  • M. Jones 2-4 K, SB(12), CS(1)
  • M. Weaver 1-4 HR(1), 3 RBI, K
  • B. Oberholtzer 7IP 8H 2R 0BB 4K

Another solid start for Brett Oberholtzer, another win for Danville. Danville is tied for the best record in the Appy League and is 5 games ahead of Princeton for the division lead. That is all.

GCL Braves 0, GCL Blue Jays 4

I gotta say, there wasn't anythig worth mentioning here. Only three hits and all the pitchers gave up runs. Also I am a bit lazy.

He's not.

he just had an amazing first month in AA. Now it seems like maybe he’s starting to get back to his normal rate.

Teheren was also named Prospect Pitcher of the Day by Baseball America. Another hat tip to him for his great performances so far this year!

To see him go 7 innings is great. I’m sure they have him on a strict pitch count, so it seems that he is really attacking hitters

Oberholtzer

He is a great kid a pitcher. I remember facing him in high school.

Maybe it's just me...

But Teheran’s pitching line from last night is incredibly impressive to, regardless of how the outs where attained. He’s extremely advanced for his age.

Q: If on-base pct is so important then why don't they put it on the scoreboard? -Failcoeur

A: Because the Braves don't want to show their fans how bad you suck.

Huddy getting hit hard in a first inning rehab start with GWN.

He gave up 2 runs in the first, keeping the ball up in the zone. I hope he settles in next inning.
The game is on Peachtree TV.
