Game 113 Recap: Nationals 1, Braves 8
Pitching wins championships, just remember that. Tommy Hanson added another win to his Rookie of the Year resume as the Braves bested the Nationals Tuesday night at Turner Field. Hanson had a shakey first inning, struggling to find his command on every pitch, but he battled through, actually struck out the side in the first, and only allowed one run to score. After that, he was pretty much in command. He got some help from the third base umpire, who ruled Nyger Morgan out on a steal attempt, when he seemed to be safe -- that led to a Washington coach being ejected.
As for the offense, it was pretty much evenly spread out, with everyone contributing. Every regular got at least one hit. Ryan Church was 2-for-3 with 2 walks filling in last minute for Nate McLouth. Chipper Jones was 2-for-4 with a walk and a homerun that was absolutely crushed in the 7th.
We broke the Nationals 8-game winning streak and sent their best hitter, Adam Dunn, home with a golden sombrero.
The Braves did some good hitting with runners in scoring position, getting some key run-scoring doubles from Martin Prado in the third, and Yunel Escobar in the fifth. Just a lot of good hitting in this game. And a lot of good pitching. More games like this, please.

Peter gammons just said something on baseball tonight to the effect that Hansons delivery is going to effect him in the long run, like in 3-5 years he is gonna have arm trouble, can anyone comment on this? Are there any comps? Please? This worries me.
It's an odd delivery, no doubt
but driveline mechanics did a breakdown (I trust them a bit more than Gammons for mechanics) and they seemed to like his overall mechanics. Most people who don’t really know mechanics (myself included) automatically think when they see something different, it means future injury, but that’s not necessarily true. And the last part, cross your fingers. No matter how good your mechanics, injury can hit any pitcher.
http://www.drivelinemechanics.com/2008/12/12/690731/pitching-mechanics-tommy-h
it means
what will be is what will be. There’s no reason to be overly worried about an increased chance of injury because of his mechanics, but at the same time, pitchers do get injured. He’s got just as good a shot as any other pitcher of staying healthy. If you want to see the kind of mechanics that get you injured, go watch Mat Latos pitch.
Kyle says he loves Hanson’s arm action, which he considers the most important part of a pitcher’s mechanics.
a clean arm action is the most important part of the delivery and Hanson definitely has that going for him.
He says Hanson’s tempo is bad (which it is), but that, I believe, just means he’s easier to steal off of. Kyle doesn’t like the followthrough though, which does look kind of like Peavy’s followthrough, but that’s not as significant as arm action. Basically, Kyle thinks he is less likely to be injured than the average pitcher.
F U Peter Gammons.
I’ve heard it mentioned before, but scouts ALWAYS find little flaws in every prospect. Im not too worried.

People like Gammons commended Mark Prior’s mechanics and harped on Tim Lincecum’s, these guys really don’t know about probable injury risk they’re just floating out non-sensical opinions

I was under the impression the Prior’s mechanics were horrid…
People will come Ray. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again.
It would be nice to get some help
Fish and Phils are both in extra innings.
Pete Rose was actually banned from baseball for teaching Jeff Francoeur how to play. He made up the gambling stuff to hide his shame.
That’s certainly 1 silver lining about the extras for them tonight.
11 and counting for both so far…
especially the Phils
since we’re about to start a series where our pen (fingers crossed we have an easy game tomorrow) will be well rested.
speaking of bullpen, angels released justin speier today. Don’t know if we’d be interested but we should, he’ll only get league minimum and he’s been a good setup man in the past
