Open Thread 8/11: Nationals at Braves
Washington Nationals at Atlanta Braves, Aug 11, 2009 7:10 PM EDT
Tommy Hanson takes the mound for the Braves against the Nationals ace, Jon Lannan. There were a lot of lineup changes, but in the end it should be Nate McLouth out, Ryan Church in, Kelly Johnson out, Chipper Jones in, with Omar Infante back in the lineup at second.

SportsNite is such a crock of shit. How about pre-gaming it with a show that fans will actually enjoy? …..Beyond their realm of thought.

IMO we have a better shot at the division than at the wildcard. We’re only one game further behind in the division but 3 teams fewer ahead of us.
I’m beginning to agree with you.

I'm sorry,
but I think keeping Adam LaRoche out of the lineup is not wise. He is not a platoon first baseman. He is a quality, starting first baseman with good power and he should be playing everyday. I don’t care if the pitcher IS LH.

You may be right. And although we are facing a left handed pitcher, I still kinda wish Kelly was in the lineup. He’s really starting to turn it on.
I partially agree.
It’s good to see O back in the lineup, and of course, Marteeen is a hittin’ fool this year. But Kelly is more dangerous, and he actually hits lefties better than righties. Why that never earns a spot from Bobby is beyond me.

Yeah, but now that Omar is back, the other half of the Prado/Infante puzzle is complete. The two of them are a riot. And Prado credits Infante for helping him.

Kelly is great against lefties…at least as far as I can tell. It’s not saying much, but he has more homers against lefties than righties…I think.
He’s been doing a pretty good job at making up for it.

Yeah,
a 2-run homer that sparked a wonderful comeback, extra-inning victory and a game winning, 10th inning homer pretty much signifies that he’s BACK, and worthy of a regular spot on this team.

You know, you feel for the Nationals
But if we’re going to catch an undeserved lucky break, might as well be against a team that’s out of the playoff hunt, since they don’t have much riding on each game.
Then they can draft Strasburg again, if they fail to sign him. And if they fail to sign him, they can also have the second overall pick.
i believe MLB is coming out with a rule that if you are drafted by a team
your with that team unless traded or released

I think that Jareth Cute-guy did. Oh there you are.
MLB can suck one for their stupid lens rule, so giving them more money is not in my budget. I’m fine with the places that are already available during BP. But I’m sure it’s fun if you’ve got the means.
Lens rule?
you ARE allowed to take pictures and such on the field. I had a digital camera, not sure if that falls under the lens rule.
Tigers love pepper; they hate cinnamon.
by Jareth Cutestory on Aug 11, 2009 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions
Wow, ok with the CAPS, man! Sorry if you didn’t think the Cute-guy joke was funny, but couldn’t think of your whole name at the moment. Thought it was, ah, kinda cute myself.
Anyway, I’m aware you’re allowed to take pictures on the field…I’ve taken one or two (thousand) myself. What I’m referencing is the general rule that lenses longer than 5" are banned in every MLB ballpark…and I just got one (300mm) at the end of last season. Been wanting one for years, finally got it, and they come up with that dumbass rule. Talked to a security supervisor friend at the Ted and he says it’s b/c MLB doesn’t want anyone else making money off something they easily could. No other reason for the rule. Some parks enforce it less, some employees police it more than others.
Eh. That’s all I was talking about.
http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/atl/ballpark/guide.jsp#cameras
This is why I stick to pics. Words get me in shit.
You in no way ruffled my feathers.
I wasn’t trying to be snarky or anything like that. Sorry if I came across that way. I just hadn’t heard the lens rule and wanted to make sure it’s known that you can take pictures while on the field for the BP experience. I’m sorry? Let’s be friends!

I’m of two minds about this. On one hand, it’s a 5 run lead, save the bullpen since Tommy is hardly laboring.
On the other, Braves seem to have this one in hand, so save your young stud-you’ll need him more in the stretch run.

He’d have 30 HR power this season if his lefty power numbers were on par with where they historically have been compared to his righty power. I blame it on the WBC. Chipper should keep that 20 streak going and maybe get to 25 this year.

If Dunn walks 30 fewer times, he'll drive in 15 more runs. This is thanks to the scientifically proven formula: RBI = (this is nonsense) (I made it all up).

i think i know what article you’re talking about (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=hill/071127), but I dont really see anything racist about it. I mean, she even directly said "This isn’t to say Taylor was killed because he was black. "
She was just talking about that it’s sad that the most likely cause of death for 18-24 year old black men is homicide. Nothing racist about that fact…it’s just the sad truth.
I took it differently. Her saying that is about like Ricky Bobby saying “With all due respect”

If Dunn walks 30 fewer times, he'll drive in 15 more runs. This is thanks to the scientifically proven formula: RBI = (this is nonsense) (I made it all up).
Here's a stat: Wins as manager: Dusty Baker, 1,162; Bill James, 0.
