Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 7/7
Just a little suggestion for everyone that will be helpful. Now that mobile commenting is available for your choice of pocket internet one of the options that I think everyone should start to make use of is the 'Jump' space that appears when you start a new Fanpost. Using the 'Jump' space makes it easier to browse the mobile sites Fanpost section because it will only show what is above the jump when browsing and then show the whole post when you click on it instead of just showing the title of the Fanpost like the regular site does. Basically it just saves some scrolling time, but also gives readers a quick snipet of what you r post will be about; a sort of prologue. Thanks, and I hope this helps.
Gwinnett 3, Durham 8
- R. Gorecki 2-3 2 2B, BB, K
- B. Canizares 1-3 2B, 2 RBI
- J. Reyes 2IP 0H 0R 0BB 2K
A nice comeback start in this game for JoJo Reyes, who has been on the DL for over a month now. He is another guy that gives the Braves some of that much needed starter insurance. Who would like to see Reid Gorecki get a shot in RF for the Braves? What is the worst that could happen?
Jacksonville 6, Mississippi 0
- B. Hicks 1-3 2B, BB, K
- J. Heyward 1-3 2B, BB
- F. Freeman 1-4
Jason Heyward got his 4th XBH in 4 games with Mississippi and he now has a .921 OPS on the year between A+ and AA as a 19 year old. Just wow. What we are looking at with him is really something special. I mean what is the low end of his ceiling? Garrett Anderson when he was good? High end? Manny Ramirez from the left side? I'm not trying to incite mass hysteria but he really might be the best hitting prospect we have had since Andruw Jones. (Lets not mention Andy Marte).
Potomac 10, Myrtle beach 1
- G. Rodriguez 2-4 K
- C. Rohrbough 2.2 5H 6R 5BB 3K, WP, HBP
- C. Kimbrel 1IP 0H 0R 0BB 2K
Cody Johnson is only hitting .190 in July but still has an .870 OPS for the month. Thats kinda crazy. There has to be something wrong with Cole Rohrbough, that or he was ridiculously overhyped. Craig Kimbrel appears to have finally calmed down in Myrtle Beach. He posted his third straight scoreless outing tonight and his first inning in A+ where he didn't allow a baserunner.
Rome 0, Lexington 1
- Z. Spruill 8IP 3H 0R 0BB 10K
Easily the best start of the season for Zeke and probably the best start by any Braves farmhand this season. Zeke had a no hitter going into the 6th and almost gave up a run on a double and a single but Adam Milligan gunned the runner at the plate to end the inning. Too bad the offense couldn't get things going. Maybe it was because Danville was having all the fun.....
Danville 23, Pulaski 7
- M. Jones 3-4 HR(1), 3 RBI, BB, K, SB(4), PO
- C. Harrilchak 5-7 4 RBI, SB(3)
- RSF 3-5 2B, RBI, 2BB, K
- R. Hefflinger 2-5 2B, HR(6), 5 RBI, 2BB, 3K
- D. Wiley 2-6 2 HR(2), K
Good lord that is a lot of offense. You know it was funny at first because it was just a few games, but I really think they need to move RSF up. The guy is still hitting .474 through 14 games, which doesn't seem like a lot, but anyone that hits like over a span of 3 weeks deserves to get bumped up.
GCL Braves 1, GCL Blue Jays 0 - 7 Innings
- R. Pacheco 3.2IP 0H 0R 2BB 4K
- D. Alvarez 2IP 0H 0R 0BB 2K
- J. Hayes 1IP 0H 0R 1BB 0K
Yeah thats right, this trio of Braves pitchers no hit the Blue Jays team for 6.2 innings. Not bad guys. The Braves offense only mustered three hits, but there were enough errors to get them one run around.
GCL Blue Jays 3, GCL Braves 4 - 8 Innings
- L. Hiller 2-4 HR(2), 4 RBI
- K. Farrell 5IP 2H 1R 1BB 4K
Nothing really special in this other half of a split squard game. Hillers 3 run shot was most of the offense and then he delivered the walk off hit in the bottom of the 8th inning.

Jay Hey = Man Ram - the attitude and roids. Yes please?
Poor JoJo Reyes. The guy is an AAAA all star! Just imagine if his stuff would translate to the ML level.
And is there any chance Zeke ISNT our top pitching prospect when TC, baseball america, espn, etc. list our top prospects?
P.s. Whos RSF?
2009 Atlanta Braves Motto: We ♥ leaving RISP.
Please tell me your kidding about RSF?
If you don’t know who RSF is by now then you obviously haven’t been keeping up with the mL guys!
Top pitchers
Maybe if Teheran steps up or Devall comes back strong, one of them could be the top pitcher.
I’ve been reading about RSF for awhile and I still don’t know much about him. I’d Google his name, but I have to get ready for work.
Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg
born in South Africa, went to high school in Coral Gables Florida, played college ball at Florida Atlantic (2007-08) and finished college at Nova Southeastern (Division II). Don’t know how long he’s lived in the US.

FYI on RSF
Riaan has been in the states since he was 9, played baseball in Coral Springs at Coral Glades High School.
I don't know
Scott Diamond’s 2.20 GO/AO ratio is pretty sweet. His WHIP is trash though. I think I would vote for J.J. Hoover at this point with his 85 K’s in 77 Innings. He ERA is nearly identical to Zeke and he gives up few hits. His upside probably doesn’t touch Zeke’s…………but he has probably been a touch better this year so far. His control is nearly the equal of Zeke’s too plus his K/BB ratio is through the roof.
That’s the point of a prospect though, who’s going to be better in the long run. If Hoover is slightly better right now, then that’s a question for pitcher of the year, not top prospect. Spruill is as projectable as anybody in the system.

Cole Rohrbough
I hate to invade the personal life of players, but has anyone heard anything else about Cole’s comments last week about quitting baseball. He might follow in Greinke’s footsteps and need some type of depression evaluation.

I’m friends with him on facebook, and not to pry into his personal life too much, but he’s a 22 year old guy who is struggling at baseball for the first time in his life, and trying to come back from frustrating injuries. All the while, he’s dealing with getting married and having his first child, who he seems to miss terribly. He’s still a young guy, and life is hitting him hard right now. He’s going to struggle this year, and if he makes it through all this he’s going to be stronger and tougher and better. He seems to have a terrific support system of family and friends, so I hope he can make it through. His baseball talent is still there, he just needs time to sort out the mental side of the game.
I think sometimes all fans see are stats on a page, and we have to remember that behind those numbers is a person, who has to deal with all the things life throws at them.
Thanks for the information.

Maybe its just the woeful lack of quality offensive production on the big team, but theses young hitters are just damn exciting for our future.
J Hey, Freddie and Cody Johnson are at the top of the list, but the unpronounceable South Africanier (Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg) and Robert Hefflinger from Buford, GA, are also high on my tracking meter.
Hefflinger is a 6’5", 225, 19 yr old RH RF who seems to have a big power stroke — 6 HRs in 64 ABs in the Appalachian League.
maybe i missed this...
Schafer was out but came back, but is he out again now?
I read somewhere – maybe AJC – that he had re-injured the same wrist that has bothered him since the 2d or 3d game of the season.
Wrists take along time to heal because they are used so much in everyday life…a small wrist injury could haunt a baseball player for an entire season due to all the wrist action in their swings.

Freemans lack of power concerns me a little.
I think he only has about 5 HR…
Any reasoning behind the sudden drop?
he hit a lot of his homers in the second half last year too. So maybe he is a second half type guy. Or maybe he is turning into a Mark Grace type rather than a Fred McGriff
I’d rather a big guy like Freeman develop consistent contact before he works on hitting the ball out of the park (which I believe he will have no problem doing in a couple of seasons).

Freeman by a lot. Makes much more contact, walks more, plays better defense, is younger, etc. There’s less to dream on.
thank you for helping me make my point

I guess I’m just not that concerned about FF’s lack of power this year, because he just posted a .933 OPS in June as the youngest hitter in the Carolina, AND earned a promotion.
Frankly when you’re producing that much, facing guys that are 2-3 years older than you every night, and are making good contact you’re getting the job done.
Just from what I’ve seen of the guy in ST I can tell you he’s got power, he hits the ball hard and he’s HUGE.
Q: If on-base pct is so important then why don't they put it on the scoreboard? -Failcoeur
A: Because the Braves don't want to show their fans how bad you suck.
