Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 7/6
Norfolk 5, Gwinnett 6
- R. Gorecki 2-4 2B, RBI, BB, K, SB(11)
- B. Canizares 2-5 2B
Reid Gorecki hit great in June but has started off pretty slow this month batting only .133 through 4 games. That isn't much really so I can't make anything of it, and tonight he had an excellent all around game. Barbaro Canizares continues to hit well, even if his power has slipped a little. He hit 4 homers in April and May each, and then only 1 in June. I have expected him to fall off all season, but he keeps hanging in there.
Jacksonville 9, Mississippi 4
- J. Heyward 2-5 3B, 3 RBI
- F. Freeman 1-5 K
- C. Rodriguez 3-4 RBI
- J. Lyman 5IP 2H 2R 2BB 5K
Jason Heyward hasn't hit any homers yet, but he does have 3 XBH in 3 games with Mississippi and hasn't struck out yet. Frederick Freeman hasn't been as good yet, but he hasn't been overmatched either. Their performace so far is a testament to their maturity as hitters. I am just glad to see that they aren't getting beat around like Mike Stanton is. You know I didn't realize that Jeff Lyman is only 22 years old. And he has actually been pretty solid this year for Mississippi, especially as a reliever.
Myrtle Beach - Off
Rome 1, Lexington 2
- B. Schlehuber 1-4 HR(4), 2K
- D. Delgado 6IP 4H 2R 0BB 8K
A nice bounce back game here for Dimaster Delgado who had struggled in his last couple of starts. All of his components look good and he actually retired 14 straight at one point in the game but he just bunched his hits together in the 6th and allowed the two runs.
Danville 4, Pulaski 3
- LV Ware 3-5 2 2B, RBI, K, SB(7), PO(1)
- RSF 1-5 2B, 3K
- R. Hefflinger 2-4 HR(5), BB, K
- M. Jones 3-4 2B, 2 RBI, SB(3)
A nice come from behind win for the Danville team with Hefflinger hitting what would be the game winning homer in the top of the 9th inning. Hefflinger has been solid so far but he has struck out 18 times in 59 AB. Very Cody Johson of him. Also Tyler Stovall started this game and was just OK. He did K 6 in 4IP, but walked 5 and threw two wild pitches. That is a 17/14 K/BB in 11.2 IP. He needs to get those walks down and keep the Ks where they are.
- C. Bethancourt 2-5 2K
- A. Feliz 4-4 2 2B, 3B
Yay! A bunch of guys I don't know anything about!

a man among boys
Obviously Heyward could jump into the Majors right now at 19 and produce ala Justin Upton, but we don’t need him at this point, because he wouldn’t be the difference in the pennant chase. What I’m wondering is, if he continues to rake at Mississippi, the most important level on the minors should we call him up for some at bats in September to bust his cherry so to speak?
I’m sueing you plagerizing me…I even used the word rake…

Since you said it....
Now I bet Heyward Ks tomorrow!
I like the love for Jeff Lyman. We tend to forget about guys like him, high draft picks who don’t dominate, but that’s one of the good things about high school guys, when they need to develop at their own pace, they’re usually still young. I think he’s a very solid pitcher who could contribute to a ML bullpen, probably next season.

Well he is young I think 19 so I would say he is a good prospect after putting up good numbers so far this year

Mycal Jones
I really like this guy. When we drafted him I was excited because I really like slash contact hitting MI with speed like he is. So far in the young season he seems to be producing.
BTW I really like the new mobile commenting on SB Nation.

I really do think that the FO is seeing if Heyward will be ready for a starting spot on the team coming out of ST next year. Then they’ll let him grow in the majors, much like Texas has done with Elvis Andrus this year. With us probably not resigning Anderson and Frenchy not being on the team one way or another (non-tendered, most likely), we’ll be thin at OF. Heyward will probably have every opportunity to win the job out of ST, and we could see the Heyward-Schafer-McLouth outfield sooner than we think.
Right now its too early to make the judgement as to whether he IS ready, but I know its got to be in the FO’s mind…especially with the budget the way it is and us needing to fill several holes in the offseason.

Cody Johnson was placed on baseball america’s midseason all star team as the DH. Hanson was on there too…of course…

Ha! Just letting everyone know you can now post on the site from your Mobil device. I am doing this from my phone. Moe to the subject if heyward proves he can handle AA right now I don’t see how the braves can’t give him the same chance they gave schafer.
The upton comps make a little sense even if you say upton was the better prospect at this stage. What better option will we have for RF next year with out payroll? And if heyward can hold his own we can spend money on another position.

promotions?
This mobile stuff is onpoint! Anywho, when do you guys think Cody Johnson is gonna get promoted to Mississippi? Or Mycal Jones or RSF to Rome?
And what’s wrong with Brandon Hicks???

Rome doesn't even seem to have a first basemen currently on the roster. Why hasnt RSF been moved up?
Rome has had Chais Fuller playing first the last three games, which is a good way to get his bat, which is better than his glove, in the lineup. They also has Shults play there, and he’s certainly got the body for it, and Jahdeil Santamaria spent most of last season playing 1B. They obviously have a reason for not moving RSF up; I personally don’t know what it is, other than that maybe they just want him to play in one place and be comfortable.
As far as Hicks, the only real difference between this year and last is that this year he’s not hitting any home runs. Last year he hit for a low average, didn’t walk much, and struck out a ton. This year he’s doing the same thing, even hitting around the same number of doubles, but he’s just not getting the long balls. Really, he should have repeated Myrtle Beach.
