Open Thread 7/5: Braves at Nationals
Atlanta Braves at Washington Nationals, Jul 5, 2009 1:35 PM EDT
Derek Lowe is on the mound against our old friend Scott Olsen. He always pitches us pretty tough, though we usually are able to score against him. Let's hope the Braves take the rubber game and win the series.

Anyone watching the Federer vs Roddick Match at Wimbldon?
Its one hell of a match
What’s ridiculous about it is that they have been playing for just under 5 hours, but have set the record for most games in Wimbledon history.
Right now I’m concerned I may not get the game.
My FSS channel is showing St. Louis and Cincinnati … wtf?
Crossing fingers at 1:35 it will go to the Braves game.

Lineup per CR(DOB blog)
1. Nate McLouth CF
2. Martin Prado 2B
3. Chipper Jones 3B
4. Brian McCann C
5. Yunel Escobar SS
6. Garret Anderson LF
7. Matt Diaz RF
8. Casey Kotchman 1B
9. Derek Lowe P
Again no Frenchy. I feel like something could be up.
Anyways I do love the lineup.
This I like.
And i agree that this could be a sign of somethings afoot.

whatever, Mac is still probably going to make the team. Lets just hope its not like last year where he was only put in for the last inning (thats if he was even put in)
Yunel is the Queen of Hearts
I’m thinking McCann will ultimately be there, too, but how is Molina much more deserving than McCann? McCann has been in a slump as of late, but there shouldn’t be any question of his ability as a catcher.
i know, McCann is clearly the best catcher, and the only thing Molina has is his defense. Everyone knows McCann should start, even ESPN put him as the starter

He said he has his home run ball shoved in a sock in his locker until he gets back home with it. Asked about and commented on how the heat of Georgia is a bit different then the “dry heat” of Phoenix where he lives. Gave a shout out to his wife and kids (girl 2 months, son 2 yrs old). Seems like a real nice guy.

Granted, they’re all deserving but I mean…its not like you can have all 4 of em in at the same time. If you give em all equal playing time they’re only gonna get 1 ab each. Quite frankly, since THIS ONE MATTERS, I dont wanna take any ABs from Albert.

Question:
Lowe’s sinker is obviously not sinking. He’s got basically 2 pitches, so if his sinker is not working, it’s going to be a long day for us, short day for him (see score).
I am wondering, do they not see this in warm-ups? If your starter’s pitches are not doing what they are supposed to in warm-up, would they ever just not let him start the game – or is the rotation so set that he goes no matter what less an injury?

Is this more of an ethnic thing or a religious thing? Sorry, being of non-Jewry ethnicity, I don’t know.
umm.. it depends on the person. For Lezak it sounds more of an ethnic thing, he’s proud of being Jewish, which is awesome. For me its more religious, i’m proud of being a religious Jew.
I would love to see more Jewish athletes be proud of being Jewish, cough cough, Youk and Braun

Okay, 2 separate rumors from fannation.com
Braves in Market for shortstop
Bobby Cox is at wit’s end with shortstop Yunel Escobar, whose effort doesn’t always match his ability. It wouldn’t be shocking if the Braves shuffled shortstops before the All-Star break, perhaps adding a veteran such as the Astros’ Miguel Tejada, the A’s Orlando Cabrera or the Orioles’ Cesar Izturis, who is a couple of weeks away from getting back on the field after appendicitis.
Royals/Braves deal in works?
The Royals have tried to deal 33-year-old Jose Guillen and his righthanded bat, which would be attractive in a few places. Given the Dayton Moore-Braves relationship, there’s always the possibility that some kind of swap of outfielders (Jeff Francoeur is a Moore favorite) could be in the wings.
Where the hell do people come up with this stuff?

Base stealing
is mostly mental – knowing when to go, etc. Speed is nice, but if you don’t know what the hell you are doing, it does you no good. Morgan is a good example of this.

more 1st pitch swinging. Jeff Francoeur continues to… underwhelm.

2 men on base and we make the pitcher pitch just 2 more pitches for 2 outs.
I’m sorry, there is NOTHING “positive” about this situation so I’m going to bitch about it.

I hope Bobby doesn’t look at this game and say “well Acosta and Medlen pitched but we lost” and then doesn’t play them again for a while. Acosta got the out and Medlen looks good. They need to play more.

yeah but he does abuse all the other guys in the bullpen. I don’t know how he can justify overworking those guys and not playing Medlen and Acosta.

I’m convinced all this is because we were forced to wear these dang red hats.
That’s my theory and I’m sticking with it.

What are the chances that the Braves Trade Javy and dont pick up Hudsons option and five the fifth spot to Medlen. And they actually try and go after a Holliday in the offseason.
Baseball is my life
I would piss my pants if they did that
not because I was happy, but because I would be so furious, I would not be able to control my bodily fluids.
Why is everyone so big on Holliday? What has he done away from Coors Field that warrants such admiration?

Just an idea...
Derek Lowe led the AL in saves in 2000. Though it was a while ago, and we are paying him a bunch of money to start, but we can switch Lowe and Medlen on the staff and use Lowe as a reliever. that would give us some flexibility with Gonzo and Soriano and there impending free agency, and our search for a right fielder.
Chipper
you are a good enough hitter to where you can wait for you pitch…what is with all of the early count outs for you this year???

As in 92? Ouch.
I avg 165 or so but struggle to maintain it.
"Well behaved women rarely make history" ~ Laurel Ulrich
yes
a 92. I couldnt do anything right. My ball was breaking all the way across the lane, but I couldn’t get any Brooklyn love from the pins. My next game was a 173, so that was a nice rebound, but still…a 92.
A couple of weeks ago, my first game was a 184, I followed that up with a 189. The third game started off with 2 strikes, so I was thinking to myself “Damn, this is going to be a good night!” Well, i then left 2 frames open…then bowled a 9 on my first ball of the 5th frame, then I guttered the spare attempt…followed by a double-gutter in the 6th, a gutter then a 1-count in the 7th, and a gutter to start the 8th…it was aweful. I still ended up with a 116-something, but had to basically strike out to break 100.

Some days, no matter what you do it doesn’t click. Too much oil, no oil etc. Our house let’s school kids bowl on the lanes in between leagues and too cheap to dress the lanes after. Needless to say we get lanes in crap condition most of the time.
Most frustrating game ever for me: I bowled in No-Tap Tournament a couple months ago. All strikes until the 10th frame. First ball a X, then 2nd ball was a 8. I was soooo close to a perfect game No Tap. I ended up winning the Tournament with high score of 298, but since I’ll never bowl a real game that close it was a disappointing.
