Trade Deadline Open Thread
Here is a catch-all post to talk about what you think the Braves should or should not do at the trade deadline. (Rosterbation is allowed, though not encouraged.)
Mark Bowman just twittered this:
It still appears that the Braves will stand pat before today's deadline.
A whole lot of nothing so far, which is fine with me.

i would cream for this
as long as it took 3 of our prospects from #s 23-28

I would expect at least the demand of Schafer or Heyward, followed by 2 other prospects.
The base paths belonged to me, the runner. The rules gave me the right. I always went into a bag full speed, feet first. I had sharp spikes on my shoes. If the baseman stood where he had no business to be and got hurt, that was his fault. -Ty Cobb
Rosterbation may be discouraged
But if we landed Dunn, I’d rosterbate until I went blind.
Not that we really need to do anything
But if we do make a deal, let’s just hope it’s either with the Mets or Tigers.
It’d be nice to get a ridiculous rip-off deal at the trade deadline.
Don't be quiet!
Drop Norton
Trade KJ to Oakland for Weurtz as Oakland is looking to move O Cab
Call up Conrad.
Activate Omar.
Send Schafer, Medlen, Kotchman, B. Hicks, and Brandon Jones to San Diego for A. Gonzalez and H. Bell.
how can anyone be serious with a user name of “sparklemotion”????
someone likes cult classic movies.
That would be awesome for us but I don’t see San Diego going for it. I say Medlen, Brandon Jones and another prospect to the Nationals for Dunn. We’ll have him next year in left, McClouth in Center and Schaefer in Right. Dunn will allow us one more year to develop Heyward.
by michaelcooksey on Jul 31, 2009 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions
The Nationals, just like the Padres, wouldnt take anything less than Heyward and a slew of other prospects for Dunn or Gonzalez.
The base paths belonged to me, the runner. The rules gave me the right. I always went into a bag full speed, feet first. I had sharp spikes on my shoes. If the baseman stood where he had no business to be and got hurt, that was his fault. -Ty Cobb
I am willing to bet they’d take less for Dunn than the Padres would take for Gonzalez based soley on the fact that Dunn’s contract is a lot less friendly and shorter.
by michaelcooksey on Jul 31, 2009 12:20 PM EDT up reply actions
The Fathers have a top prospect in the wings at 1B and the Red Sox and a few other teams have shown some serious interest in Gonzalez – which Towers has listened to. I think we could get him if we include Medlen, Schafer, and Kotchman.
by Sparklemotion on Jul 31, 2009 12:22 PM EDT up reply actions
Yea, but im also sure the Red Sox would have to give up Buchholz and Bard along with 2 other prospects for Gonzalez and thats more than we can afford to offer.
The base paths belonged to me, the runner. The rules gave me the right. I always went into a bag full speed, feet first. I had sharp spikes on my shoes. If the baseman stood where he had no business to be and got hurt, that was his fault. -Ty Cobb
More realistic:
Freddie Freeman, Randall Delgado, Brett Devall, Jordan Schafer, Low-A/rookie pitcher
FW would choke on his Five Dollar Footlong and laugh uncontrollably.

Please stop the rosterbation you will go blind. That package wouldnt even get us Peavy which Towers wanted to get rid of because of salary. Gonzalez is going to cost a team its top at least 4-5 of its top 10 prospects which Boston is discussing with the Padres. Buchholz, Bard, Masterson, Lowrie and Westmoreland is the start for what its going to take.
Baseball is my life
Dunn over Gonzalez
I would prefer Dunn
Dunn AVG: .276 HR 26 RBI 74 OBP 405
Gonzalez .252 29 59 .394
His contract is shorter and although it pays more, it would get him out quicker and allow Heyward to have an additional year and allow Freeman’s arrival to not be blocked by Gonzalez who is under contract through 2010 as well, but has a very affordable option for 2011 (5.5 million).
by michaelcooksey on Jul 31, 2009 12:29 PM EDT up reply actions
i think it would HAVE to be...
Schafer
Medlen
Freeman
Robrhrough
for Gonzalez
then KJ and Kotchmann to CWS for Alexei Ramirez and Jordan Danks, OF.
then B. Hicks and B. Jones to KC for R. Mahay and Michael Montgomery, LH
by apoxonbothyourhouses on Jul 31, 2009 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions
"then B. Hicks and B. Jones to KC for R. Mahay and Michael Montgomery, LH"
We dont want Hicks and Jones, why would anyone else?
Because a team with common sense would see Jones as a potential XBH machine and someone who can get on base.
The base paths belonged to me, the runner. The rules gave me the right. I always went into a bag full speed, feet first. I had sharp spikes on my shoes. If the baseman stood where he had no business to be and got hurt, that was his fault. -Ty Cobb
You dont think the Padres look at prospects in other farm systems?
From what ive read, everything Rohrbrough has touched has turned to shit, Medlen isnt as compelling as he was when he was still in AAA and Schafer is injured.
KJ cant hit outside of AAA this year, so the CWS would laugh at that trade offer.
KC might actually bite on that proposal, but why would you want to make it?
The base paths belonged to me, the runner. The rules gave me the right. I always went into a bag full speed, feet first. I had sharp spikes on my shoes. If the baseman stood where he had no business to be and got hurt, that was his fault. -Ty Cobb
Good Job !
Hey I like the idea !!!
Only part that sucks is losing Medlen and Schafer but I doubt they would want Schafer b/c he is still out w/ a bad wrist.
Good trade ideas I would do them.

I am willing to bet the Braves make a move. I love the way they are always under the radar with business. We do need to make a move though teams that we will be fighting for in the east and wild card have gotten stronger. The Marlins are about to get Nick Johnson, Phillies Lee, Giants Sanchez, Cardinals holliday and the day isn’t over yet. Not that any of the moves make these teams great but it does strengthen their teams. We are going to get a bull pen arm at least.
Baseball is my life

I’d like to see the Braves make a run at Adrian Gonzalez, but I haven’t seen any indication that they are trying to do anything big like that unfortunately. I’d guess Wren will make a move for a right handed middle reliever, somebody who can share the 7th and 8th inning duties with Moylan this year with the possibility of moving to setup or closer next year. The biggest improvements the Braves will make from here on are likely to be releasing Norton, sending down Hernandez and Valdez, and recalling Infante, Conrad, and Hudson.

Kevin Towers may be the dumbest GM of them all...
ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark reports that according to an executive of one club that inquired about both Adrian Gonzalez and Roy Halladay, the asking price on Gonzalez is “astronomical.” And what does “astronomical” mean? “Three times the asking price on Halladay,” the exec said.

Correction: Minaya is the dumbest GM of them all...
From ESPN.com…
Despite all the controversy surrounding the Mets this week, general manager Omar Minaya may still find time to make a deal before the deadline.
“I turned down a couple trades (Wednesday),” Minaya told the New York Daily News. “Believe it or not, some pretty big names were presented. That being said, if you talk to some GMs around the league, I’ve been calling around. We have some ideas.”

This is a confusing statement. The METS are turning down trade offers from other teams? Who could the METS possibly have that other teams want?
Also, the part where he says “if you talk to some GMs around the league, I’ve been calling around.”
WTF? Is he trying to PROVE that he makes phone calls, like we don’t believe him or something? It is like a 3rd grader telling a story to his freinds and saying “If you don’t beleive me, ask Bobby. He was there.”

A reliever....
I do understand that we have hudson coming into the fold in a few weeks, but I still would not mind getting a reliever who we could control for a few years, such as capps or frasor or qualls. It would come at a price, as these relievers are controllable, but it would give us a quality guy if we were to lose Gonzo and/or soriano, and the draft picks that we would get for one or both of those guys would probably have similar value to the package we would give up to get a new reliever. Just an Idea, probably one that is not going to happen, but still one to at least consider because it can help us this year (adding another arm takes away the wear and tear from our current arms), and as mentioned above, provides us with support next year.

Release Greg Norton and replace him with Brandon Jones
Send down Diory Hernandez and call up Chris Burke
That needs to be done before any trade happens. Norton cant catch up to 88 mph fastballs and Diory is nothing more than an offensive liability. Jones would replace Norton as the lefthanded bat off the bench.
I would try to package Jo-Jo Reyes and some A ball prospects for another reliever.
Some names:
Michael Weurtz, Jensen Lewis, Brandon League, Jeremy Accardo, Brandon Morrow, etc.

hmmm
i kinda disagree.
The McLouth move was made out of not wanting to have someone like Blanco as our everyday CF. Nate has been pretty good. Going into the break he was on fire but since then he has been terrible aside from a ..348 OBP he has a .302 SLG leaving him with a .650 and a .208 Batting Average.
Church is a guy who has been just as bad a FYF was when he was here almost. Only difference is Church has a higher OBP but a lower SLG. yea getting on base is nice with some walks but not with a lot of hits.
I dunno i just see both of those deals replacing the production we already had in a sense. McLouth is an upgrade over Schafer but who’s to say Schafer wouldn’t have been putting up similar numbers. His first few days he was destroying the ball and same thing in ST. He injured his wrist in the first week of the season and went down hill from there.
We could use an upgrade at a couple of spots (RF and 1B) IMO as well as getting Acosta out of the pen.
But it’s whatever its 3pm and i doubt something will happen.

Sources: Dodgers making run at Padre stars — 2:48 p.m.
Even with Indians catcher Victor Martinez headed to the Red Sox, there is still a possibility that the Padres will trade first baseman Adrian Gonzalez.
The Dodgers are making runs at both Gonzalez and Padres closer Heath Bell, either separately or in a blockbuster, according to major-league sources.
If the Dodgers acquired Gonzalez, they presumably would send first baseman James Loney to the Padres or trade him somewhere else.
The Angels also are talking to the Padres about Bell.

Theres no way we install Laroche over Klutchman... right?
He is just about the only guy on the team with a + UZR, and he has been really hot since June. There has to be more too this. Laroche to bench at minimum.

We are betting on a huge 2nd half from LaRoche....
which is what he does every year. I still don’t like the trade though.
Comparisom
2009 OPS:
Laroche – .772
Kotchman – .764
UZR:
Laroche : -3.4
Kotchman : +3.2
Factor in the fact that since June Kotchman has been hitting far better then his .764 OPS, you have to think there is more too this.
by Sid Bream's Moustache on Jul 31, 2009 3:27 PM EDT reply actions
There has to be something more
All we’re basically doing is trading some Average for Power…We have to be getting something out of it. I defn don’t see us needing to help out the Indians or Red Sox, so maybe we are getting a reliever thrown in there as well…

Trade
They are both great defenders. Kotch hits for better average and Adam goes for the long ball. Adam is a free agent after the season and Kotch is arbitration eligible. Only thing I can think of is that IF LaRoche leaves after this year when his contract is up, he might be a type B Free Agent and we would get a pick in the supplemental draft.
Not a fucking Clue
LaRoche makes more money too and I’m not sure what his option is for next year, but, I know that Kotchman’s deal for next year would be cheaper too…WTF
Bad Deal....
I think LaRoche is better, but he is a free agent after this year and Kotchman is under control for awhile.
Jesus Christ
We just essentially traded all our prospects in the texas deal for for:
1 year of Tex
1 Year of Kotch
1/2 a year of Laroche
SHIT.

I don’t even know how this deal makes sense. A pending free agent, making more money than Kotch, with a fairly comparable bat, traded straight up for Kotch, who’s under control for much longer?
The monetary aspect of this deal makes zero sense. I can’t see FW making this move, knowing the financial situation of the Braves.
Maybe they he won some kind of bet
And Chipper got to be honorary GM for the daY?

LaRoche wouldn’t be as a backup, the rumor that made no sense given his pinch-hitting and left-handedness. They’re getting him as a starter if they get him, and it looks like they are. Kotchman would be dealt away.

If Braves complete deal for LaRoche and it appears they’re very close to doing so, Kotchman won’t necessarily be included in three-way trade
