The Non-Waiver Trade Deadline: Discussion
So here we are, finally. July 31, the last day that teams can make trades without having players pass through waivers, and hopefully, the end of all the rosterbation threads (and random posts) we're all tired of. Don't hold your breath on that second part, though. This is always one of the most exciting days of the year for baseball fans, even when our team is not expected to make any significant moves. This thread is to discuss today's possible trades, all throughout baseball. I will post rumors and official trades, and hopefully some of you guys can help as well. Of course, should the Braves make any moves, it will be posted on the front page by gondeee, or in the fanshots by a helpful user. Please, do not rosterbate, there is another thread for that. Well, let's start off with some current rumors:
- Anyone else tired of the Roy Halladay rumors? I know I am. According to Jon Heyman, the Rangers nearly acquired Halladay yesterday, but the chances of a deal seem to only be decreasing. He says Justin Smoak, Neftali Feliz, Julio Borbon, and Derek Holland were all discussed in possible trades. Apparently the Jays would be willing to pay some of Halladay's contract for this year, which would need to happen for the Rangers to get him. The Dodgers are also in the mix. The Red Sox are still possibilities, but they could be working on another big trade, more on that later.
- The Marlins haven't been big buyers in the past few years, but this year rumors are buzzing. Ken Rosenthal says that the Marlins are pursuing Nationals first baseman, and free agent-to-be, Nick Johnson. The Marlins are awaiting an answer on an offer they made yesterday. They are also said to be the leader in the pursuit of Padres closer Heath Bell, who 10 to 15 teams are said to be interested in. The rumor that the Marlins and Padres are close to a deal that would send Adrian Gonzalez and Heath Bell to Florida for prospects has no basis.
- The Braves aren't expected to make any significant moves, buying or selling. There still remains the possibility that they could add a reliever or bench player, but payroll is a problem. The need for a relief pitcher also decreases as Tim Hudson get closer to returning.
- Well, Boston is once again in talks about a trade for a big name at the deadline. ESPN's Jayson Stark hears that Boston, Cleveland, and another team are working on a trade that would send Victor Martinez to the Red Sox, Clay Buchholz to Indians, and prospects to Cleveland and the unknown team. Adam Laroche could also be moved in this deal, as him would have no place should Martinez move to Boston. The Red Sox interest in Adrian Gonzalez appears to have waned.
- The Yankees are among the teams pushing to acquire Jarrod Washburn, the lefty from Seattle. The Mariners asking price is high, but Washburn is having a very good year, and can definitely help a team down the stretch. The Dodgers and Brewers are also interested.
- The Mets are "buyers". Lol.
- The Twins could trade for Orlando Cabrera. I'm not sure he would be much of an upgrade.
- Buster Olney says there's momentum building toward a Chad Qualls deal, he won't come cheap. He is one of the guys I would love to get, along with Michael Wuertz, Scott Downs, or Nick Masset.
- In case you haven't heard, OMG BRAVES RELEASED BENNETT.
As I said, I will post updates in the comments section. You guys feel free to contribute if it turns out I miss something.

Mets perplex me
The Mets are “buyers”. Lol.
But won’t trade their prospects:
But there’s not much of value on the ML roster outside of their superstars according to Amazin’ Avenue’s Sam Page
The Mets are also the most top-heavy team in the majors, in terms of having most of their talent stacked in four players
This team makes me laugh.
Pete Rose was actually banned from baseball for teaching Jeff Francoeur how to play. He made up the gambling stuff to hide his shame.

I know our offense has been better...
But I still can’t shake the feeling it will revert to it’s first half ways. IMO, we need a hitter.
i hope you are being sarcastic

of course it would be nice but he has had his chances and we are 7 out in east and 4 in wildcard. Every situation is meaningful no more giving outs away he cant even make contact on a 85 mph fastball

Norton is having a bad year, but he was good last year. Francoeur is having a bad year, and he was bad last year also. Why are you such a supporter of Jeff, but seemingly hate Norton? I admit, Norton has been horrible so far, but c’mon, how much playing time has he gotten? 40 AB’s, thats a very small sample size…
WHAMMY!

We have plenty of lefty bats, why do we need a lefty pinch hitter?...
Barbaro Canizares makes MUCH more sense to me in that role compared to Norton. He can rake, you’d think his approach at the plate would make for a solid pinch hitter although I have no clue how his past is in that role, and you have a right handed bat that can do some damages on a roster completely void of that (besides Escobar and Prado).
And what about Kotsay? Any possible interest there since he’d be similar to Norton except the ability to play CF too, and with a hotter wife.
Norton switch hits
And Mark Kotsay is with the White Sox, and they badly need him in CF. But you may have a point about the Canizares thing…
then maybe he needs to just hit righty...
cause he has the same number of hits (3), extra base hits (1 double), and RBI (2) vs. righties and lefties this year. The difference though, 11 at bats (vs LH), and 40 at bats (vs. RH).
I was thinking the same thing about Canizares. This is a very left-handed hitting team and it would be good to have a right handed power hitter for the late innings. The Braves have KJ on the bench to handle the left-handed PH duties. It would be great to get a right-handed hitting outfielder as well.

Mets, Tampa, Cleveland 3 Way Deal? ***********
Mike Silva has the low-down on another three-way trade:
We are hearing dialogue about the Mets/Rays/ and Indians talking about a three way deal. In this scenario Victor Martinez would go to Tampa and not New York. As of now we do not know who the Mets would receive in this scenario.
Interesting..
Red Sox also heavily pursuing Adrian Gonzalez************
Well, we are hear Gonzalez and Martinez as possibilities at first base for Boston. Surely they won’t get both.
The Red Sox appear to be in full pursuit of first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, according to another source.
The Padres are also shopping closer Heath Bell, who could be added to a Gonzalez deal if the Red Sox are willing to deal hard-throwing youngster Daniel Bard. The Marlins are also in the mix for Bell, a 31-year-old righthander and ex-Met.
I can’t imagine how good the Sox would be if they got those guys.
Indians "pessimistic" about finding the right deal for Martinez.
Ken Rosenthal:
as Friday began, the Indians were pessimistic about their chances of trading catcher Victor Martinez — perhaps an indication that the Red Sox were making progress in their efforts to land Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, perhaps not.
Take that how you will.
I wonder if that's covered
in Obama’s healthcare plan.

It’s being debated in the finance committee.
If Dunn walks 30 fewer times, he'll drive in 15 more runs. This is thanks to the scientifically proven formula: RBI = (this is nonsense) (I made it all up).
Here's a stat: Wins as manager: Dusty Baker, 1,162; Bill James, 0.

Juan Rodriguez, of the Sun-Sentinel:
It might be [Nationals first baseman Nick] Johnson or bust for the Marlins. They were in on closer George Sherrill before the Orioles dealt him to the Dodgers. They’d love to add Heath Bell, but the Padres asked for Cameron Maybin AND Andrew Miller. Unless the price comes down the Marlins are out.
and the Red Sox are going after Bell and Gonzalez…
That deal would have to include more prospects than we gave up for Tex and Mahay…

It is an incomplete question..
add a reliever, at what cost? Add a bat, at what cost? If the cost is high, then do nothing becomes an option. Sure, add a reliever and let Gonzalez spend a couple weeks on the DL to rest up. But then, what do you give up to add a piece?

They are both pitchers.
I had never heard of either until this season. French has had a good year, but I wouldn’t call them “good” prospects.
from mlb.com
The 23-year-old French cracked the Tigers’ rotation last month following steady success at Triple-A Toledo. He went 1-2 with a 3.38 ERA in five starts and two relief appearances for the Tigers, but lasted six innings in only one of his five starts. He quickly ascended the Tigers’ development ladder after being selected in the eighth round of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft.
Robles, who turned 20 years old in March, has split this season between Class A West Michigan and Lakeland, going 8-6 with a 4.24 ERA and 111 strikeouts over 91 1/3 innings. He allowed just 79 hits in that span.
They had better break a leg
and hope Nick Johnson doesn’t…

Rosenthal:
The Marlins have improved their offer for Nationals first baseman Nick Johnson, offering another minor leaguer in addition to Class AAA right-hander Ryan Tucker, according to a major-league source.
If the deal is completed, the Nationals would pay part of the approximately $1.8 million remaining on Johnson’s contract, another source said.
