The Braves and extending players.

Hello all.

I'm really curious to know if anyone knows the history of how the Braves organization usually works when it comes to extending players. Like do we usually wait till the offseason or what? I know some teams talk midseason with their players and others dont.

The main reason i ask is because we have an impending Free Agent in Soriano and Im curious to know anyone knows how the Braves usually go about things. Or just any word on if they have even talked about it. Basically everything I see regarding him points to the Braves looking forward to compensating picks for him but nothing of extending him. Gonzo I could let go of easily but Soriano should be our top priority IMO.

Thoughts?

I cant think of a time

when we extended a guy mid season. the latest would be spring training, like we did with Chipper. plus, with the market the way it is, im not so sure Frank Wren and co. wanna commit money when they dont know what Soriano’s value will be in 3 months.

Im just saying we don’t wanna extend Soriano for 2yrs/18MM if we can get 2yrs/12MM in a few months.

I’d like to see him a Brave, but I also am not a big fan of over paying for guys who pitch one inning every couple of days.

It might not be a bad idea though. While we may make a playoff run this season, things look very good for 2010.

Well a few years ago we did extend Wickman in September to a 1 year deal, and then a few years ago in like late April or sometime in May(cant remember) we extended McCann. And we extended Hudson contract in ST after we acquired him when we did, and then we extended Chipper. I guess it all depends on the circumstance. Just whenever both sides agree.

Paying Soriano free agent money would be a pretty large mistake IMO. His injury history is extensive and he’s a reliever. That doesn’t scream multi-year contract, eight figure contract.

I think

he is fully worth a deal with a base of like 5 mil and incentives up to 9 a year.

by drumzalicious on Jul 31, 2009 2:54 AM EDT up reply actions

Except...

He’ll get the $9M guaranteed out there… I mean, Brian Fuentes got 2/$17.5M last offseason!

Agree...

I don’t think we can expect this type of performance on a regular basis from Soriano. He seems to be able to put it together for one full season, but not back to back seasons. Let someone else pay him massive money and find a closer elsewhere. They don’t exactly grow on trees, but they can be found and not at a premium price after a dominant season in a contract year. Let the Yankees give him a $15-20+ million dollar deal to be their set up man, and spend the money on someone more useful like say Mark Derosa, Jason Bay, Jermaine Dye, Xavier Nady, Magglio Ordonez and then you can find a closer among Ryan Franklin, Jose Valverde, Trevor Hoffman, Chad Cordero, Tom Gordon, Latroy Hawkins, JJ Putz, and others.

Ugh...

if those guys (excpet for Bay) are our only options, I’d rather overpay for Soriano.

Since Schuerholtz took over, it’s always been the Braves philosophy not to negotiate contracts during the season and that has been carried over into the “new” regime under Wren. If they don’t get a guy signed before a point at the end of spring training, they put it off until the next offseason.

Wickman was the only one I can remember and they did that deal because the team was out of the playoff picture and Wickman had done so well that they wanted to go ahead and lock him up for the next year.

I remember Sheffield getting upset because the Braves didn’t offer him an extension during his last year, but Schuerholz wouldn’t do it.

They extended Smoltz a few years ago mid-season. I remember Smoltz saying “Now i know i’ll finish my career with the Braves”.

By the looks of his play lately, he kinda did finish his career with the Braves.

I still think he’ll turn it around

I wouldn’t extend Soriano until after the season in any case because of his injury history and (ahem) the damage Bobby does to relievers. Assuming he still has his arm attached when free agency begins, I would offer him a very good 2 year deal. If the Yanks, Sawx, etc. then want to offer him more years, best of luck to him on his new team.

I've been waiting for someone else to want to see Soriano remain a Braves after '09

While he does have a recent injury history, he has been rather lights out and has pitched like a deserving All-Star should (I won’t let it go that he was not selected). Maybe he just puts up great numbers every other season and in the year in between, suffers a major injury that requires surgery (doubtful).

Bottomline, every long-term deal you hand out to one of your players has is its own risks. Not every deal is going to work out in your team’s favor, but Soriano IMO is WORTH the risk.

Trends

In the last 20 years our only…what I consider…“lights out” closer has been Smoltz…yes Soriano is very good, but to be in lights out teritory (and worthy of an 8 figure contract) it would mean at least 25 saves and maybe one blown one during that period. As of late Soriano has let a couple of beams in.

by bravestatoo on Aug 1, 2009 7:56 AM EDT reply actions

As much as I’d love to keep Soriano around next season, it’s never gonna happen. He’s pitched well enough this season to move into that “big money closer” category. He’s gonna be offered arb; promptly decline; and sign a big deal elsewhere. Sorry, but that’s just how it’s gonna happen.

On the plus side: we do get two draft picks out of the deal so we could be alright.

by beeswax on Aug 1, 2009 11:34 AM EDT reply actions

Let's not forget

This is a contract year for him, and I don’t have any stats, but it seems players tend to perform better in contract years to grab the money. So I agree, I don’t think the 2010 Soriano will perform nearly as well as the 2009 Soriano, unless it’s a 1-year deal.

by BigG1392 on Aug 1, 2009 1:45 PM EDT reply actions

Sorinao pitched very well in ‘07 for a guy who had never been a closer. Except for a couple of early bad outing, he was lights out most of the year. Last year he had what is best called a piched nerve in his elbow. It wasn’ t that serious but they didn’t diagnose it until late in the season. He had the surgery at th end of the season and was ready for ST. He was scared it was TJ surgery and his toughness was questioned when he refused to pitch. He will be the best closer on the market and it makes little difference what this board thinks he is worth, he will get several big offers. Many think he just entering that “elite closer” level.
