Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 7/3
Gwinnett 0, Norfolk 5
- J. Schafer 0-3 K
- S. Marek 1IP 1H 0R 0BB 1K
So the Gwinnett Braves just can't muster any offense without Brooks Conrad. He must have been holding them afloat. Jordan Schafer has fallen off a bit and I wonder if he is still not fully healthy, or just not as good as we thought he was. I didn't know Stephen Marek had been promoted, but after some serious struggles in Mississippi early this season he calmed down a bit in his last few outings.
Mississippi 3, West Tenn 4
- M. Young 2-4 RBI
- C. Rodriguez 2-4 RBI
No Frederick Freeman or Jason Heyward yet in this game. I am sure we will see them tomorrow. I am also a little disappointed that with all the shuffling going on Matt Young didn't get the call up to Gwinnett. The guy has paid his dues and has been very solid for two season now in AA. Give the guy a chance.
Salem 10, Myrtle Beach 0
- L. Sumoza 2-4 K
- G. Rodriguez 1-3 K
Maybe the Pelican's really felt the hole that losing both Heyward and Freeman left in their lineup. The two new guys, Gerrardo Rodriguez and Luis Sumoza, appeared to handle it well in their first game at least. Sumoza is a guy we need to keep our eye on. He has just started to do it, but I would love to see him really tap into the wealth of tools he has.
Bowling Green 2, Rome 0
- JJ Hoover 7IP 4H 1R 1BB 8K
Wow, another shutout? Hoover has just been getting better and better and he is making a case for himself being our top pitching prospect when the season is done. That is a race which is wide open at the moment and JJ Hoover has been the most consistent pitcher the Braves have run out there (apologies to Scott Diamond who has been solid and consistent as well). Also RSF did not get the promotion to Rome.
Princeton 3, Danville 2
- RSF 2-4 HR(4)
- J. Teheran 7IP 8H 2R 1BB 5K
You have to imagine that Teheran was incredibly efficient in this game to have been allowed to pitch 7 innings. He has been pretty impressive so far this season and if he keeps this up he might be the guy at year's end. I don't really understand why RSF didn't get the call. He is hitting a smooth .538 right now. Granted it is only 10 games, but most people don't usually do that through 10 games even when they are hot.
GCL Braves 2, GCL Yankees 5
- K. Rose 3-4 RBI
- E. Mejia 1-2 BB, K
Finally, one of my favorite players from last season gets back on the field. Ernesto Meji hit 73 XBH last season for Myrtle Beach but has been on the DL all season after what I think was a leg injury of some sort? (Little help on that one if anyone knows). Anyways, he doesn't walk a ton and he strikes out a lot, but the guy hits everywhere he goes. He is 24 at this point so he needs to get back playing if he wants to make an impact in the organization. I could see him having some useful major league seasons but not making any lasting impact unless he really turns around his plate discipline.

Game Tonight
I went to the Danville game tonight, and I can now see why the Braves paid Juilio the $900,000 signing bonus. He threw about 80 pitches with about 60 strikes, about 10 change ups (great movement), 15 curve balls, and his fastball was very live and around 92-94. I was inpressed by the youngster and two bad hops in the field made the difference in the game. It was cool to see him play, and I look forward to see him playing in Atlanta hopefully.

I read an article about him in one of my older Chop Talks. I was quite impressed. It seemed as if this young man has been working on his pitching since he was old enough to walk (slightly exaggerated), and becoming a ML pitcher has always been his and his families dream for him.
I look forward to seeing him pitch!

Mejia blew out his knee (not sure if it was the ACL or MCL). He told me he’d be out until August, so I guess the recovery went well.
No, Schafer isn’t fully healthy. In fact, he told me yesterday that his wrist still felt bad and he had to leave the game early today because of it. I was talking with Norfolk’s second baseman Justin Turner a week or so ago about his wrist, which was injured in a way similar to Schafer’s; he was told by the doctors that it’s the kind of thing he can play through, but it will probably bother him all season. So that’s probably what Jordan can expect too.

Yeah wrist injuries are a bitch. And I thought Mejia blew out a ligament, but I couldn’t remember exactly. Thanks.

He did. He left the game tonight early because of the wrist.

Any idea why he got ejected?
All I saw was that he “lined out”. Seems harmless enough..

He dropped an F-bomb cause he was upset and for whatever reason the ump decided it was directed at him and threw him out. Schafer had argued over the balls and strikes in his first at bat and the ump yelled at him in while he was in the dugout. The guy just decided he had a problem with Schafer; every time that same ump comes through he does this with somebody.

That sounds pretty retarded...
I hate umps like that! They just have to be the center of attention…everything’s always about them.

This guy is bad. It took me a couple of innings to realize it, but yeah, every time he comes through he end up having an altercation with somebody.

Yikes!
Well, I’m just glad it wasn’t just JS getting over-emotional about something. I’ve seen him spout off quite a few f-bombs, but as long as he’s not yelling them at the ump I don’t really see how it matters…

yondaime, yeah i have kept my eyes on Sumoza all year. Im not sure what he will develop into but he is showin signs of a possible starting OF for the future for us or another team, he does have potential thats for sure. Basically we got him for Devine.

Im a little worried about Schafer
I know he’s young and all, but could this wrist injury really bother him for a long, long time? He’s sucked since spring training (well, the first series of the year wasn’t too bad). But anyways, should we just forget about a september call up?

A wrist injury will effect the speed of every swing until it is 100% healthy. I wouldn’t bet on Schafer hitting well at all this season, or atleast near the .300 level we all expect him to…

Would it heal sooner if he just sits out and lets it completely heal before trying to play through it?
by HEYJUDE on Jul 5, 2009 12:31 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t think it will heal until he takes a lot of time off. Realistically, he’d probably have to miss a couple of months for it to heal up properly, and I guess they’re not inclined to do that.

The kid is still real young
I’d love to see him recover soon, but I’d much rather, at this point, he just take off the entire month of July and try for a return by mid August. He’s 22, and we’ll want him just as much next year as we want him this year.
Whatever contribution he could make this year to either the Gwinnett team or Atlanta team is insignificant against what he’ll end up doing his entire career. Not that this is career threatening, but playing hurt can lead to bad habits, and I’d much rather he just wait until he’s right so he get back on track. He’s got promising talent in many areas, so patience is still definitely suitable.
