Braves Fans In The Military
(Previous Title: Braves Fans in Uniform)
The recent replies to the FanPost by dolphinsinbuffalo gave me an idea. I’m curious as to how many Braves fans who frequent Talking Chop are veterans or currently serving in the military either here at home or abroad.
As a wife of a Navy veteran, I appreciate the years he gave of himself to serve and I thought a thread to publicly say THANK-YOU to all who have served and are currently serving would be nice. The sacrifice you and your family give should never be taken for granted.
If you are currently serving, would you share with us how you are able to keep up with the Braves and how often you are able to see or hear the games? May God keep you and your fellow servicemen and women safe and if you’re stationed abroad, may you be reunited with your families soon.
I look forward to your comments and I know personally after reading them - it will make me appreciate even more my ability to simply go in the family room, click on the large screen HD television and find any of 3 possible channels that provide the games for me and my family.

I’m in the Delta Force and on Seal Team 6.
If Dunn walks 30 fewer times, he'll drive in 15 more runs. This is thanks to the scientifically proven formula: RBI = (this is nonsense) (I made it all up).
Here's a stat: Wins as manager: Dusty Baker, 1,162; Bill James, 0.
hahah
Funny. My mom called me yesterday to tell me that on Judge Joe Brown a guy told the Judge that he was a retired Lt Col from the Air Force. He went on to say that he was previously a SEAL, who then enlisted in the Air Force as a Private, and was promoted within 8 months to Lt Col (he apparently got a slot at Officer Training School within an even shorter time-span) and finally retired 8 months later. Joe Brown then proceeded to tear the guy to shreds.
But hey, if Tyrece can go from TSgt in Transformers 1 to a Chief Master Sergeant 2 years later in Transformers 2, I guess anything is possible!

NCChopper, thanks for the shout-out here. I am thankful everyday that I am one of the few who have the great opportunity to do what we do. Granted, I have been slightly less than busy for most of this year at work. lol.
I am currently stationed at Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene, Texas. Contrary to popular belief, Texas SUCKS! At least, West Texas does.
I only get to see my Bravos play when either one of TBS, Fox or ESPN decides to show them. In other words, when they play the Mets, Phillies, Cubs, Yankees or Redsox, I get to see them. I am not sure how I will be able to keep up with them next year when I deploy…that frightens me more than any Haji ever could! :)

Depends on where in Texas I guess…I’ve never been to Abilene but I’ve lived in Houston – and have no desire to return to live there again. Can you say HOT & HUMID, the kind of humid where you can’t breathe at 7am in the morning? I don’t miss that one bit.
San Antonio is quite nice and Austin is THE place to be if you’re into live music, especially Blues. I have friends in Dallas and Austin and visit on occasion still.
When do you deploy next year?
"Well behaved women rarely make history" ~ Laurel Ulrich
I really like San Antonio, Dallas and Austin. I have never been to Houston, but it is even farther east than those places, so it can only be better!
Not sure yet…they are revamping (again) our deployment schedules…I may just volunteer for a year-long tour…

NCChopper,
Thank you and I think this an absolutely wonderful way to recognize and say thank you to those who have served or stil are serving this great country in the uniform of the armed forces.
I am a 22 year retired veteran of the U.S. Navy and if I had it to do all over again I would in a heartbeat.
By the way,
I know all too well the sacrifices a Navy wife has to make and the challenges and obstacles that they have to overcome. My hat is off to you for your support of your husbands choice to serve his country. It really is a family commitment.
This
This fact does not get recognized nearly enough!

Thank You Mountngrown and others for your kind words.
I really should clarify that I met my husband and we married after his service days were finished. I never sacrificed as a family member of someone on active duty. I was raised to appreciate those who serve and so I make sure he and others know my gratitude.
And, I know there was an earlier complaint about a military post and it’s since been removed.
Please know I never intended this to be a political or divisive post. More than anything I was curious as to how our men/women in the military get to watch the games and root for the BRAVES.
"Well behaved women rarely make history" ~ Laurel Ulrich
Since I am now retired it is easy for me to follow the braves and watch the games the same way most everyone else does. However, when I was on active duty and deployed onboard ship the only way I had to follow the team was the daily sports scores in the small ship’s newpaper that was put out every day. I was actually on a deployment during most of 1995 and missed most of the season including all of the post season. Luckily, my wife recorded all of the world series games on VHS (remember back then) and mailed them to me so I could still watch the games even if I already new the outcome. I don’t think she ever has really understood how much that meant to me for her to make that effort knowing that she doesn’t like to watch sports on TV.
Wow Mountngrown, your story about the 95 WS and your wife doing that gave me goosebumps.
How great it is you have the games on tape (yes, I do remember VHS) and the heartwarming story to share these many years later that touch other Braves fans. It’s amazing the lengths we (and the people who love us) will go to to keep up with our team.
"Well behaved women rarely make history" ~ Laurel Ulrich
Since my brother isn’t a baseball fan, I’d just like to say that I’m proud that my brother served in the National Guard, he served 2 stints in the Middle East near Kuwait. He did see some fighting, and thankfully he got to come home injury free.
I’ll have to go home and look for a pic of the gun he got to use. Big Farking Gun!
I'm about to be in that position
brother is about to sign everything and take his physical for the national guard, then basic next summer, and OCS after that. Still a little scared by it all and I’m definitely not going to follow in his footsteps but I’m really proud of him.
Sparhawk, Tell you brother Thanks for us. I was sure to include the National Guard when I made the image above because all too often their service and sacrifice is overlooked by the general media and folks forget these men and women who serve. I’d love to see that gun!
was385, I hope your brother stays safe and I’m sure it means a lot to him the pride you feel for what he’s doing.

Im not in the military
But both my Grandpas, one of my uncles, 2 cousins and my dad all served in the Marines or Air Force. Its always a great time on Veterans/Memorial/4th of July.
Thanks for posting this NCChopper. Great stuff.

Not in the military, personally, but
A lot of my family has been or still is in the military. My father was an army brat and my grandfather served for close to 3 decades in the army. He was in the Vietnam War and Korean War, but also served overseas in Turkey and Germany and eventually retired as a Lt. Colonel. He also spent time at Fort Leavenworth (kansas), Fort Bliss (texas), Fort McPherson, Fort Benning (georgia), and Fort Carson (colorado). My father grew up watching the Royals, but when the family moved to the Atlanta area, he can clearly remember going to old Fulton County Stadium and watching Hank Aaron and Dale Murphy play. I grew up not only with a deep respect for my grandfather, but for my grandmother and my uncle and aunt for supporting my grandfather throughout his service. They moved around not only the US with him, but also spent time in Germany and Turkey in US bases. There were also plenty of Thanksgivings and Christmas’ that they had spend without my grandfather because of his time in Korea and Vietnam. Though my father never served, I can appreciate having both of my parents around and growing up in one community. I love my grandfather’s army stories, especially when he was overseas and he always seems to have new ones every time I see him.
One of my uncles is still in the army and is currently a Colonel. He’s able to live nearby and commutes to Fort McPherson, but he also spent plenty of stationed in Germany and Fort Drum (new york).
Besides my father, I can’t say for a fact that any of my family follows baseball, let alone the Braves. But, I can remember growing up on TBS and WSB/WGST and going to Fulton County Stadium.
To anyone on TC that is serving, has served, or supports a spouse or family member in the military, thank you.
I’m retired AF currently working for the Army in Korea. In fact, I owe my Braves allegiance to the AF as I became a fan after getting assigned to Dobbins AFB in Marietta in ‘79. The team was so bad in those days that they always had tons of empty seats and the organization used to provide free tickets to the USO who in turned distributed them to active duty military in the Atlanta area. Anyway, between the free tickets and local TBS showing every game (and reruns late at night) I was hooked.
Now I subscribe to MLB.TV and can watch the games live starting at 8:05 in the morning (don’t tell the boss!) or if work actually gets in the way, I can catch the archived game or condensed game. MLB.TV is great!!
Hey Gib in Seoul, now don’t you let your boss catch you – but enjoyed your post. Baseball at 8:05 in the morning eh?… I wonder how the game threads around here would be different if only the early birds could blog? HaHaHa.
It’s amazing how many fans came via TBS. Ah, the good ole days. Stay safe while you’re there.
"Well behaved women rarely make history" ~ Laurel Ulrich
I can’t believe this is my first comment! I look at the site every nite and always pay attention to what most of y’all say. Anyway, thanks for helping me stay updated on all things braves related! Hope this works, I’m doing this from my phone.

Not in the military, but...
the parallels between baseball and service go back to the Civil War… and the histories intertwine a fair amount from there. And it doesn’t matter one bit if the Braves go 162-0 if every single one of ya’ll don’t make it home safe. My best to everybody on here that serves for the benefit of the rest of us.

Yeah, it’s not pretty. I received this news this past weekend about my brother-in-law’s nephew:
On July 22, 2009 Cody and four other soldiers were on detail looking for improvised explosive devices called IEDs when one exploded beneath their vehicle.
Two soldiers were killed and Cody along with another soldier was severely injured. The fifth soldier received minor injuries. Cody was transported to Ramstein Air Base in Germany. He sustained a closed head injury, severe jaw fractures, multiple broken ribs, a punctured lung and four broken vertebrae.
He is in an induced coma and medical personnel determined that he is now stable enough to bring him state side. He will be transported via Medivac to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington DC on July 24th where he will undergo reconstructive surgery on his jaw and be assessed for further medical treatments for his other injuries.
Sucks to hear that!
My prayers are with him.
On the bright side, there is some crazy statistic that says something like 95% of all battle-field injuries are survived if they can get the wounded soldier to a hospital.

Lizziebeth – thoughts and prayers with Cody, his fellow soldier and their families.
Kinda puts everything in perspective when you read things like this. Grown men playing a kids game seems trivial when compared to what these guys & gals face every day.
Update us on how he’s doing if you find out.
"Well behaved women rarely make history" ~ Laurel Ulrich
Thank you all.
No new news as yet, but sometimes that’s good. I will certainly pass on to my brother-in-law all your well wishes, and he will be very appreciative. It’s times like this that I can overlook him being a Skankee fan. ;)
My heartfelt thanks to all those who sincerely serve in our armed forces.
Update on Cody, as requested...
Wednesday, 7/29-
He did have back surgery this morning. The surgery took longer than expected – there is more damage than first thought. Ligaments that are supposed to be attached to the vertebrae are not attached anywhere. They could not reattach them. He has a very shattered and fractured lower vertebrae. This will require surgery at a later date. Today, rods and cages were placed in and around the Thoracic vertebrae that were injured. This would be the upper part of the vertebrae. Since today’s back surgery took longer than anticipated, they did not do the jaw surgery.
Ugh, I hate that so many of our friends and family members have to live with this daily.
Thank you
My most heartfelt, sincere gratitude goes to all who have served, are serving, and the family members who support them (often from thousands of miles away) everyday. Hearing my mother-in-law tell the story of how her husband left for Saudi on her birthday, leaving her to care for their two young sons by herself for months on end while constantly wondering if he were safe, always makes me sad and so grateful that there are people out there who sacrifice so much (and sometimes everything) for our country. God bless you, and a safe return for all!
Great Post
My Dad is a Navy veteran and I am SO proud of him and ALL that serve our country!
Thank you and God Bless each of you and your families! I salute you………

What kind of media access to the games does the military provide?
Do they provide video broadcasts (delayed or live).
Do they provide radio broadcasts?
Do they stream the games on the internet?
I know internet access is likely these days for scores and recaps but I was just wondering if any of the servicemen/women get to watch or listen to games as they happen. I’ll bet the time delays if stationed overseas would be a factor.

I know back in my day we would occasionally get feeds via AFRTS (A-Farts) Armed Forces Radio and Television Service. That is probably what has now become the AFN that MichaelProcton referred to. The used to be just occasional games…maybe once a week like the MLB game of the week. Of course technology has come much farther and with the ability to stream live video, satellite feeds and the like there is probably a lot more access now days.
Yes.

AFN on 'roids now
AFN has like 7 different channels on 24 hours a day (if you have local cable on base or satelitte service off base. One channel dedicated to Sports which usually has one-two games on daily (with delayed broadcasts also) when basketball season is over. They also show some games on AFN Prime so the coverage is pretty good compared to 10-20 years ago. The only problem is just like ESPN, they show a lot of NYY/NYM/redsox/dodgers/chicago teams. Once in a while the Braves get on. Subscribing to MLB.com video feeds works pretty good, although expensive for the year.

Currently stationed at Fort Jackson, SC. One 15 month deployment to Iraq. It was hard to watch Braves games specifically when I was deployed. But now here in the states, I catch them on Sports South or Peachtree.

And, as a fellow North Carolinian – I had to notice your siggy….very cool. I’ve never been into the whole college sports thing, but the Heels are very big around these parts LOL..

Unlike in the Dean Dome, our team never has a hard time hearing us in CIS. :)
And yeah, I know, we’ve been on an 8-year run of disappointing ends to the seasons. Figures that it would be the 8 years I’m a student. I expect that to continue this year, but our c/o 2010 looks pretty awesome.
Meh…I’ll take our 3rd straight year of a top 10 (and 2nd straight year of a top 3) recruiting class.
Speaking of CIS, has the local highschool extended Duke’s contract to continue using their basketball court?

NCChopper you are a sweetheart!
It is so nice of you to do this and I know you have thanked me for my service in other threads before. I echo the thanks to everyone that is serving or has served. Whenever I see a military service person, like at a resteraunt, I go up and thank them. It shocks them a little but I want to let them know how proud of them that they have made the biggest step in service to their fellow man. So, I am not going to tell a “Sea Story” but will attempt to answer your question of, “how did I I get information about my beloved Atlanta Braves.”
I will quickly cover 21 years USN active and 2 years reserves ( I have continued working for the Navy as a contractor since retiring in 02 working in Iraq for the Marines) I will not cover the contracting years but say most camps over here have the AFN that is mentioned (there are some very smaill or remote ones that don’t) or have internet..but Bandwidth or access to forbiden “Sports” sites can be limited depending if they have a contracted "civilian IP or just a Military IP.
I have pictures but don’t have access to them now….so bear with me I will try to make it easy to read…Or for those that are too challenged you can stop here?
1.1980 1984 Uss Hector AR-7 Homeport: San Francisco bay area note: Before I left the states I married a gal and brought her to Scotland…She said she was a Braves fan…she lied she was a Cubs fan…LOL…ohh sorry I said I wouldn’t tell a sea story)
When not in port (where I could read either one of the San Fran bay area papers or go see a game). The Radio division put out a little paper with either a small AP blurb or just the score…Also, on a “WestPAC” Cruise to the Indian Ocean(Diego Garcia) I could get two day old STARS and STRIPES (military/civilian looking) newspaper…This is how I followed our famous win streak to start the season…82?
2. 1984-1989 Uss Hunley AS31 Homeport; Holy Loch Scotland/Norfolk VA
Same as above (No local Scotish papers had baseball..of course.)..but now AFERTS had a MLB game on once a week and I remember the TWIB (this week in baseball)show too…(interesting foot
3. 1990-1993 Uss Independence CV62 Homeport: San Diego/Yokosuka Japan
Same as above but went to see Braves games in San Doll and when my ship changd homeports went to a couple of Nippon league games…Joined a Hashin Tiger’s Fan club to play pick-up baseball games..(and Drink…divorce therapy for the Damn Cubie fan leaving me…oh thats right no sea stories…lol) Oh yea, My Mom taped the World Series (Yes I still have them and watch them) they took like a month to get and of course everytime Kent (Bastard) Herbec shoves Ron G. off first I still yell at the TV!
4. 1993-1996 ONI (office of Naval Intelligence…Oxymoron…yes I know) DC
Wow, my apartment has Cable TV…except for a deployment to Bahrain, July 95 till December…The World Series…I got to watch a couple of games…everybody in the Bar (you can drink there) just looked at me funny when we won…I was asked to curtail my screaming!
5. 1996-1999 NSGD Digby UK
God Bless the internet…slow speed but ESPN game tracker came through..delay of about 60 sec. The last year there I got AFN Sat dish for everyone at the command…(had a senior Chief say it couldn’t be done…I even set up a US TV room for the single sailors living in the Brit Baracks.
6. 2000-2003 USS John C Stennis…Homeport; San Diego CA
All of the sources above available but now internet on ship! 3 months before 911 took over the LPO job for MWR…Most rewarding job of my career…Can you say Great Tickets to Braves vs Padres?…but I must have done a good job for everyone because I still have former crew members coming up to me saying, “Hey you are that MWR guy..thanks, 911’s early deployment and Cruise Sucked but you helped to take our minds off it”.
There it is, Short (but not too short) and sweet. Again thanks for all the nice words for my service a decision I would make again a thousand times over. Go BRAVES
bravestatoo – (btw do you have one? I do but not Braves related)
What a great recap of how you’ve kept up with the Braves over the years! I’ll admit to wondering how things worked out with the “cubbie” fan, only to see not so well later in the text. Sorry ’bout that. Her loss.
Like I said above in my original post – hearing what all you all have had to do to get even recent Braves news over the years makes me even more appreciative of the convenience I have to enjoy the games.
Thanks to you (and the others so far) who have shared your story.
(and yeah, the formatting can be wonky at times, especially with lists. I tend to use the PREVIEW button on any post with length. It gives me a chance to see how it looks first and edit if need be.)

Another Sea story ...quick
I was at my 19th year in the Nav and one of the people that worked for me said…“nobody is going to believe you were in the Navy for 20 years…you don’t have any tatoo(s)”
I said that neither have I been drunk enough (possibly a lie)
and I have never seen one I would want on my body (though the naked hula girl almost won me over)
They said, “Well, You like the Braves so much, Why don’t you get one of those?”
I said I have not seen one that looks official enough.
They said, “You won’t , they are copywrited so they have to alter them a little…but We are traveling to Austraila and they probably don’t mind transfering one from your shirt!”
So, now on my right calf rests the only tatoo I would have on my body (looks cool too the colors they use there don’t fade as much!) but I live in fear when I am at the Ted in shorts… the copywrite police might arrest me or worse yet "scalp my tat!…LOL
What a great story! You’ll have to snap a photo of your calf (face hidden for copyright police not to identify you LOL) and share it with us. I’d love to see it.
My hubby never got a tat while in the Navy. I have no doubt the “not drunk enough” part had nothing to do with it back in those days – just he and needles seriously do NOT get along. He said that’s one thing he’ll just never have. So, in our house I have the bragging rights being the only one inked LOL. It was a sober decision and I even designed it. However when I’m a wrinkled up old broad I hope it stays nice. And no photo, it’s not in a place easily seen – however my doctors always get a kick out of it and it’s a conversation starter for sure. .And as Forrest Gump would say, “And that’s all I’m gonna say about that.” ;-)
The software just does that some times.
