Game 99 Recap: Braves 10, Brewers 2
Excellent game all around. Good pitching, good hitting, especially late in the game. Good baserunning, and great fielding. Derek Lowe gave the Braves what they needed and held the Brewers scoreless through five innings, which gave the Braves offense a chance to get in front.
After Brian McCann put the Braves up with a first inning double, they missed some run scoring opportunities by squandering lead-off hits in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th, including lead-off doubles in the latter two of those innings. It was looking like those might come back to haunt the Braves, but Casey Kotchman erased that fear with a monster 3-run homerun in the 6th. McCann and Kelly Johnson also added monster homeruns in the 7th and 9th innings respectively.
Mike Gonzalez pitched an inning of good work, coming back from being hit on the elbow in the San Fran series.
The Braves are playing some good baseball right now. They're pitching well and swinging the bats with a lot of confidence. They've been beatable, especially their offense, by top of the line pitching, but they are crushing just about any mistake a pitcher makes. They managed to score 10 runs in this game while giving Chipper a day off.

Looking ahead
Pitching Probables:
Florida:
Jurrjens vs. Nolasco
Kawakami vs. Johnson
Vazquez vs. VandenHurk
Dodgers:
Hanson vs. Schmidt
Lowe vs. Wolf
Jurrjens vs. Billingsley
KK is outmatched against Johnson, but then again, we did beat Tim Lincecum recently. We have a chance there. VandenHurk is not to be underestimated either, as the Braves have a tendency to make young starters look like the next coming.
In the LA series, we’ve got the advantage in the first game, but the Wolf probably has the edge over Lowe, and the third game is a toss-up. Billingsley is a young stud, but he’s struggled lately. And the Dodgers’ offense, if you didn’t know, is kinda good. It would have been nice if we’d gotten the chance to play at some of our games against them when Manny was out. Oh well.
it could be argued we have the advantage the whole time against the Dodgers. lowe has been great except for 4 starts in june.
jj has better numbers than billingsley as well.
big week for the braves. were 8-3 since the break. lets finish up 12-5 and i would be really happy.

I think it’s pretty fair to say that Wolf has been better than Lowe this year. In a similar number of innings, he’s posting a lower walk rate, a higher strikeout rate, and his BAA is significantly better. And that’s counting that Lowe is a bit lucky with his HR rate-it’s a career year for him in terms of giving up fewer home runs.
But I’m not saying we’ll necessarily lose that game, no more than we’re guaranteed to win the games where we have the better pitcher. It’s just that the matchup places us as at a disadvantage.
You might be right about Billingsley-FIP has these guys both in the same neighborhood, and Billingsley has the higher K rate, but the timing is great. JJ has been at his very best over his past 2-3 starts, while Billingsley has struggled of late.

Well, Chipper’s been struggling a bit lately so I think the KJ for Chipper swap really won the game for us. Hopefully Chip can get back on track and it really looks like Kelly is back. I know it’s only one game but he’s getting healthier and when he’s hot he tends to ride a streak. Let’s not forget how good of a second half player he tends to be.
our offense would be perfect
if we dropped NOrton and called up Bjones or Blanco

You know the best thing I’ve been reading about all the recent wins, is that it seems like the Braves are actually having fun.

The Braves took care of their "To Do List" today.
It was a great game to watch and nice to see us score with Chipper resting and playing cheerleader in the dugout.

Onto the Marlins….anyone in the mood for sushi?

I hope we fully utilize Matt Diaz in this series. He owns the Fish. They won’t even let him near the BassMasters’ Tour.
No lefty starters this series for the fish
late in the games, they may think twice about bringing in Pinto or Meyer
He’s 3-8 in his career against Nolasco, with a double. Wouldn’t mind seeing him play over Church that day.
Especially since
Church was unavailable today. 1 more day of rest can’t hurt.

Wow.
Talk a bout a small sample size.

So...
Nobody in our bullpen has worked consecutive days or games. This is new.

yes indeed
With the off day it gives everyone a much needed rest although i would have loved for Moylan/Gonzo/Soriano to have had the day off because i think a lot of the next few games will be pitcher duels.

I hope so
but with the guys we are facing im not expecting more than 3 runs. The thing about the Dodgers is they can play small ball just as well if not better than us. Furcal and Hudson at the top are tremendous table setters for any line up. Then to be followed up by Manny and Ethier (sp?). We will have our work cut out for us. They should both be good series’

Good point about the 10 runs sans Chipper, gondeee.
And props to DLowe for pitching a great game.

Kelly + Connie = harmony, dude
Kelly is the man too, btw. And Conrad is ready to play. Maybe we can get a prospect from the Mets for Norton. Or better yet….hmmmm……Beltran?

Negative
I don’t think so…I think that FYF must have been the negative…Kelly was playing hurt…right? He went on the DL (yea, it wasn’t real bad) to rest his wrist, not to fix his attitude. Conrad produced but could never compare to Kelly when he is on a hot streak!
Acie, have faith, If KJ does not keep it going Conrad is just 45min away! In the past (at least last year) when he starts these streaks they tend to last a couple of months. That should see us to the post season. Right now my preseason pick of the Braves taking the Wild Card is looking reeeaaaallll good but it sure would be nice to win the division…Damn Phils..somebody beat them…haven’t looked at their schedule…when do they have the NL Central teams?
KJ Who would have guessed ??
Hey Kelly Johnson hits a couple of dingers, man I would have never guess that. I mean it is pretty funny. Of course he was raking the ball at AAA level. Norton does seem to be taking up a good roster spot an blocking others; but he is a Cox favorite just as Peter moylan so he is not going anywhere for the rest of this year, but he will not be resigned. Barbaro will get the backup job at 1b in next years spring training. As for Kelly if he would finally get hot he would be a welcomed addition along with Prado we could alternate both of them maybe Kelly versus righties and Prado vs lefties but I seem to remember that Kelly was hitting better against lefties than righties alittle less than a mth ago. Go figure that hun ???
I am just wondering if this is another streak or is this the KJ of old; either way he should get some interest at the deadline but not alot; as for Diory as soon as Infante is back he is going to be gone until the Sept call ups anyway.
GO BRAVES !!!!
