Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 7/21

Norfolk 1, Gwinnett 4

  • K. Johnson 2-4 RBI, SB(1)
  • C. Sammons 2-4 RBI, K
  • J. Venters 7IP 5H 1R 1BB 2K

Just a good old fashioned solid win here. There wasn't a whole lot to get excited over. Kelly Johnson has hits in 6 straight games for Richmond Gwinnett. Clint Sammons has also been hitting slightly better with 7 hits in his last 13 ABs to raise his average to .236. Also Van Pope is hitting .182 on the season. For a guy we thought would be taking over third for us he hasn't  hit. At all.

Mississippi 2, Tennessee 3 - 10 Innings

  • B. Hicks 2-4
  • J. Heyward 2-4 2B, 2K
  • E. Osuna 7IP 5H 2R 1BB 4K

What the heck is that Heyward? 2 freaking strike outs? I am so done with you.

Star-divide

Wilmington 0, Myrtle Beach 1
  • C. Miles 2-4 HR(3)
  • J. Ortegano 6IP 4H 0R 0BB 5K

Looks like the Pelicans pitching staff was getting it done in this game. Ortegano has been great this season splitting time between starting and relieving. His ERA as a reliever is 1.47 vs 4.21 when he starts and my guess is he will probably be a lefty out of the pen if/when he makes it to the show as he has to rely on good control to get by. Just another guy that bolsters our pitching depth.

Rome - Off

Danville 9, Johnson City 2

  • M. Jones 3-4 2B, 3B, HR(2), BB, K
  • C. Harrilchak 3-5 2B, 2 RBI, K
  • RSF 2-5 HR(6), 2 RBI, K
  • J. Kreke 3-5 2 2B, 3B
  • C. Masters 6IP 2H 0R 0BB 4K

Looks like the Danville offense got its groove on tonight. They combined for 10 XBH and Mycal Jones fell just a single short of the cycle. Jones has tons of tools with what scouts say has 70 power speed on the 20-80 scale. He is a little old for the typical JuCo player at 22, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the Braves move him aggressively if he does well. He is flashing most of those skills in Danville right now but isn't making a ton of contact at the moment (.257 AVG with 29 in 105 AB). Anyways, keep an eye on him.

GCL Pirates 0, GCL Braves 10 - 7 Innings

  • C. Bethancourt 2-3 2B, 3B, 3 RBI, K
  • J. Hanson 3-3 HR(1), 2 RBI
  • R. Lopez 4.2IP 3H 0R 5BB 6K 3WP

We have a split squad game between the Pirates and Braves in this one. It appears the Braves kept their 'A' team home as they thrashed the Pirates. Christian Bethacourt is hitting .342 over his last 10 games with 6 XBH ( and 9 strike outs vs 0 walks). Man I love this kid.

GCL Braves 0, GCL Pirates 3 - 7 Innings

  • L. Niekro 6IP 1H 3R 3BB 0K

Well it appears that Lance Niekro finally had the knuckler working in this game but his defense committed 3 errors that resulted in 0 of his runs being earned. Well to the GCL, Lance!

WTF Heyward?

I said it earlier; i really think he should be sent down to Danville or Rome. He obviously can’t handle the AA pitching and needs to work on his swing.

TOTAL BUST.

Maybe one of our young, bluechippers like JoJo Reyes or the 19 year old Barbaro Canizares can pick it up.

Canizares really has more power than any 19 year old should have. Someday, he’ll be a great hitter for the big leagues.

Oh wait, that’s a “69” on his birth certificate, not an “89”.

by Bronn on Jul 22, 2009 12:11 AM EDT up reply actions

hahaha how did ESPN mess that up so badly at the Futures game?

Well, you can’t be too hard on them because they generally don’t expect many 30 year olds to be playing in these futures games.

by Bronn on Jul 22, 2009 12:16 AM EDT up reply actions

good point.

but still…

I mean, I can’t be surprised that they never heard of him. No 29-30 year old is ever going to end up on a top prospect list or even so much as a hot sheet. If you’re a guy who’s following the top prospects and minor league players, you probably know a bit about the Jason Heywards, Mike Stantons, Mat Gamels’ and Fernando Martinez’s, but you’ve probably never once heard of Barbaro Canizares.

LOL I laughed so hard when i saw that.

by yondaime4 on Jul 22, 2009 12:13 AM EDT up reply actions

the guy was probably writing up a 30 minute scouting report on any Yankees, Red Sox or Phillies players in the game, and made the mistake.

The announcers said he was 19 too. HAHA

by eaheckman10 on Jul 22, 2009 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions

You sure about that?

Mycal Jones, the 5’10" 165 lb SS who I’ve seen compared to Chone Figgins has 70 power? Where exactly did you get this from?

by was385 on Jul 22, 2009 12:23 AM EDT reply actions

BAs scouting report.

by yondaime4 on Jul 22, 2009 12:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Is that current or future?

by Bronn on Jul 22, 2009 12:26 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah they have them reports for about 20 guys. not all of them are in depth, but tidbits at least on a lot of guys.

by yondaime4 on Jul 22, 2009 12:30 AM EDT up reply actions

I'd imagine that's a typo

Almost everywhere I’ve seen below average raw power and bat speed

by was385 on Jul 22, 2009 5:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah that’s surprising. Not at all expected.

Ah I just re-read that. They say 70 raw speed and the word power is directly below it so my mind just blended it all together
Need to edit.

by yondaime4 on Jul 22, 2009 12:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Now that makes more sense

If he becomes Chone Figgins, I’m happy

Get Figgy with it.

Juan Flores

The 22 Y.O. Nicaraguan outfielder we just signed this past June is tearing it up in the DSL. He MUST be promoted immediately!

Robinson Lopez

Is one of my sleeper pitcher picks, he had a decent game today(too many BB) and has had a very nice season so far.

Nice to see Osuna starting to get it together. I think we should have expected some regression with him at AA after pitching all last year in low A.

get it together again*

RSF

Looks like the hand is def ok now as the power switch was turned back on and he did a little yard work tonight.

Ortegano

Since April has a 1.71 ERA and a 0.81 WHIP

Is he our best lefty relief prospect?

Q: If on-base pct is so important then why don't they put it on the scoreboard? -Failcoeur

A: Because the Braves don't want to show their fans how bad you suck.

Chris Masters

Is up to 36 K’s with one BB. His control is decent.

by graf on Jul 22, 2009 6:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Masters is also two months younger than Ortegano and two levels behind him.

Good to see Hicks with a multi-hit game. He’s been disappointing this year

by eaheckman10 on Jul 22, 2009 10:34 AM EDT reply actions

Disappointing doesn’t do justice to it. He’s fallen off the map.

Which shouldn’t at all have been surprising looking at last year’s numbers.
