Who are your favorite non-Braves players?

Howdy fellow Braves fans,

I saw this over on the Giants SB site (McCovey Chronicles, is it?) and figured we could get some fun out of it as well. Hat tip to Hobbes2d, who came up with the idea over there.

My 5 favorite non-Braves are, in no particular order (well, except for #1)

1. Albert Pujols

2. Roy Halladay

3. Joe Mauer

4. Dan Haren

5. Zack Greinke

Thoughts? What about y'all?

Josh Hamilton

By far its not even close I have been following this guy since he was drafted and have been rooting for him the whole time. He is the best story by far and his everyday struggle is amazing to me, but it shows just how great of a person he is

And he’s the most overrated player, perhaps in the history of the game, but certainly currently.

Not that he’s not a good ballplayer, he’s even been great, but he’s not among the 5-10 players in the league, and perhaps never has been.

by Bronn on Jul 22, 2009 12:30 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I never stated that he was one of the 5-10 best players in the game. This fanpost doesn’t ask for the top 5 best non Braves players. It asks for our favorite non Brave Players. Although I do believe he is in the top 5 in hits since his first full season began back in 1996. He might even be leading that category.

by bACEballstud on Jul 22, 2009 12:37 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not saying you did, but he’s perceived that way in many circles, and he’s not. That’s why I say he’s overrated.

by Bronn on Jul 22, 2009 12:40 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

he does have an outside shot at getting 4,000 hits. Take that as you may.

by yondaime4 on Jul 22, 2009 12:48 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Again, not saying he’s not good, but he’s not the cornerstone of the era that ESPN would have you believe.

Personally, I can’t isolate any 2-3 year stretch where he was a top 10 hitter in baseball. In 1999, he posted an OPS+ of 153, which put him at 9th overall. That’s extremely valuable coming from a shortstop, but in 1999, baseball was completely wacky. Something like 20 guys hit at least 40 home runs, and McGwire and Sosa both hit 60+ HRs and neither finished in the top 3 in MVP voting-that’s how inured baseball was to home runs that season. Not to completely invalidate what he did that year, but take it with a grain of salt.

After that, you have to skip ahead to 2006 to find a .900 OPS. Again, career .845 OPS is indicative of a pretty good hitter, and it’s really good for a shortstop, but he’s not legendary.

And let’s not forget that he’s a bad shortstop. He was average when he first came up, but his arm has always been weak, and he’s among the worst starting defensive shortstops in the league at this point, and has been for several years.

Keeping in mind his bad defense, take a good long look at the numbers of A-Rod, Hanley Ramirez, Nomar Garciaparra, and Barry Larkin, and I can’t say for sure he’s even a top 5 shortstop inside of his own era.

by Bronn on Jul 22, 2009 1:22 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Derek Jeter has actually become underrated by being overrated. If that makes sense

by eaheckman10 on Jul 22, 2009 10:38 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

in certain circles this is definately true… but to the common fan he is too overrated…to the intellegent informed person he is probably underrated

Very outside shot

He needs to average something like 190 hits a season through his age 43 season. Not saying it won’t happen, and I respect him as much as the next fervent Yankees hater, but I don’t see him getting much past 3,500. I know you said “outside shot” so I’m not criticizing, just adding my two cents.

Nomo was sick that year, but he was a 27 year old pitcher who’d had about 5 years of playing major league ball in Japan. He probably should have finished 2nd to Maddux in Cy Young voting instead of 4th, but I still dislike that MVPs of the Japanese league can still be considered rookies.

Probably not. If you haven’t met the dude, you probably don’t know. He played here in Norfolk for like 4 years and you really won’t find a more laid back, down to earth, all around good guy. He has a genuine love of the game and appreciation for the fans. He treats everybody like he’s known them for years. Every now and then he would go to the front gate in full uniform and take tickets, just because that’s what he felt like doing that day.

He’s one of those guys IMO that well, gets it. He plays with a ton of heart, wears his emotion on his sleeve, and is not afraid of the big moment. I loved what the guy did in the game 163 a few years ago when he came in and blew away Rockies hitters for two innings, capped off with this huge strikeout on Matt Holliday, to silence all of Coors Field.

He’s also just an entertaining person in general. Losing 25 lbs. attributed to a Wii Fit, his childhood exuberance to being able to represent USA in the WBC, and the post-WBC attitude that “time to get to work,” and an awesome story about how he wasted no time after arriving back in San Diego, piled into a rental car with Jake Peavy, and sped down to Arizona to catch the tail end of Padres Spring Training. Going on ESPN after spoiling the Citi Field home opener, and blatantly calling them out for having such a hard on for the Red Sox, Yankees, and Mets.

As cbtits said he’s just an awesome mother effer.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

Jeff Francoeur…I kid, I kid.

Pujols isn’t so much a player, but a baseball deity. He doesn’t count.

I like Hunter Pence, because I got to watch him come up with the Lexington Legends. He was a nice guy too, always signing autographs and given baseballs to kids.

Ken Griffey, Jr. has to be in there as well. Here is a player from the Steroid Era that has yet to be tainted, took a paycut to play in Cincinnati, and had he been able to stay healthy would have challenged Hank Aaron’s HR record.

I still kind of like Adam LaRoche. He’s not a tremendous player, and I’m not sorry that we traded him, but something cracks me up thinking about him in a tree stand with Chipper.

Other than that, I don’t really watch many non-Braves games enough to have favorites. As I understand, that was the point of this exercise, not to just pick the 9 best players not on the Braves. Because none of these guys would be on that list (except Pujols, obviously).

Good topic

In no particular order:

1) Albert Pujols – One of the most profound masteries of the strike zone I have ever seen. He must see pitches coming in some sort of grid like LCD read out like a terminator. He couldn’t be genetically engineered to be any more awesome, and a pretty excellent human being to boot. I wish him nothing but the best.

2) Josh Hamilton – Last years home run derby remains one of the highlights of my sports watching career

3) Chase Utley – GRRR NL EAST GRRR Goddamnit I hate the goddamn Phillies, but Chase is just awesome. He absolutely slays the league in WARP every year, and his game is nearly without flaw. Why couldn’t this guy play for the Devil Rays or something? Not to mention I have heard some AWESOME Chase Utley stories from a guy who knows him.

4) Justin Verlander – I’ve been on the BP bandwagon supporting him even when he was getting rocked, and I am glad to see his stuff is translating into performance again.

5) Ichiro – Contact, speed, the gun, and by far the best quotes in professional sports.
Ichiro on playing in Cleveland: “To tell the truth, I’m not excited to go to Cleveland, but we have to. If I ever saw myself saying I’m excited going to Cleveland, I’d punch myself in the face, because I’m lying.”

My list changes so frequently its tough…. but here are the current top 5 no braves for me

1. Curtis Granderson (I could literally listen to him talk all day long… I kind want him to retire early so that he can start his future in broadcasting today)
2. Mark DeRosa
3. Albert Pujols
4. JD Drew (nothing is better than a JD Drew interview on the unintentional hilarity scale)
5. Matt Garza

I almsot felt guilty putting Pujols on here…because hes an obvoius choice.

AS for my all time favorites (this is really hard..to do cause u dont want to pick the same guys everyone always says…but they are good choices)

1. Old Hoss Radbourn (check out his stats on baseball-reference…he was a freak)
2. Bo Jackson (he was the best althete to ever grace the baseball field and its a shame he didnt play longer)
3. Frank Robinson

Heath Bell
Brian Bannister
John Maine
Anderson Hernandez
Justin Masterson

Obviously Charlie Morton would be at the top of my list, but I figured I’d stay away from former Braves.

Also, John Maine? What makes him one of your favorite (out of curiosity)?

Went to college with him and got to watch him for a good while here in Norfolk. He’s a great guy, kind of like Charlie Morton in a lot of ways.

My top 5 would have to be:

Tim Lincecum
Randy Johnson
Vlad Guerrero – I love watching him hit pitches anywhere in the zone. Plus, how cool is the nickname “The Impaler”
Felix Hernandez
Griffey

Zach Greinke is my favorite non-Brave. Then I’d go with Lincecum, Mauer, Pujols, and Youkilis. I also really like Longoria, Swisher, Haren, McCutcheon, and Cain

Willie Harris (love the former Brave and always cheer for him, when he isn’t facing us)
Carl Crawford (could steal a base at any time on MLB 2k8…that was fun)
Brandon Webb (I’ve missed him this year… :(
Ian Kinsler (A hell of 2B and up there with pedroia, but less spotlight)
Dexter Fowler (One of my favorite new guys…aside from hanson…plus he’s from Atlanta)
