What are you reading, watching, listening to or playing right now?
Alright time for us all to get to know each other a little bit better. I do one of these things every month or so and it is really just a way for the TC community to talk about something other than baseball for a minute and learn a little more about each other.
Now the premise is just tell everyone what movie's you are watching, what books you are reading, what games you are playing and what music you have discovered recently. A few times in the past people have used this to exhange Xbox Live and PSN IDs. Feel free to post without having to back yourself up with statistics.
Reading: Chasm City by Alastair Reynolds - It is the second book in the Revelation Space series and has been excellent so far. If you like Sci Fi these books are all good reads.
Playing: Still stuck on MLB 09: The Show and loving it. In my second season with the Braves and my lineup is:
Kelly Johnson/ Gordon Beckham 2B
Chipper 3B
Ty Wigginton 1B
Ferggie Wiggins LF (Rookie from the previous draft)
I love the game. Also I am playing Sacred 2 on the 360 with some friends. Excellent game if you ever got into Diablo style RPGs.
Watching: I just watched Babylon A.D. last night and it was pretty good. Next on my Netflix is an anime series called When They Cry
Alright, now it is everyone else's turn! Let me hear what you are up to.

Hah, yeah that’s the first one of his I’ve read. One of my friends was reading it at the beach last week and asked whether the first chapter’s combo of random funny stories and random history tidbits was indicative of the book. Of course! That’s what makes them so great.

Do you think Merriweather is better than Sung Tongs or Feels? Pitchfork said it was like their definitive album, but, from what I’ve heard, I think I still like some of their earlier stuff better. Strawberry Jam is also great.

Currently making my way through season 3 of The Office, my favorite show after King of the Hill, another Greg Daniels masterpiece. I play a lot of Mario Kart Wii, watch a lot of Food Network (I’m an aspiring chef!), and love reading anything I can get my hands on (news, magazines, anything). Other than country, I enjoy just about anything new or interesing, musically, but I’m particularly a fan of Blue Note era jazz and classic R&B.

Reading: Just finished “The Stalking Moon”, an older western style novel from T.V. Olsen. It throws a lot of people from it because of it’s western setting, but if you enjoy books that build suspense and make you hear noises in the dark at night, you will love it! Also, the movie with Gregory Peck is amazing (just don’t watch it by yourself at night—it will seriously creep you out!).
Watching: Been watching a lot of Law and Order: SVU during the day, usually Braves and whatever I can find on TV at night.
Listening: Best of Chevelle mix on my iTouch. Love that band!

how is OOTP 10? I have played on and off the past few years. I played a lot of OOTP 9 last year and really enjoyed it. Is 10 worth the price to upgrade?
by yondaime4 on Jul 3, 2009 12:57 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think so. I’m playing a modified MLB game with Cuban and Japanese leagues as well as a European Major League that doesn’t compete with ours. I also turned on the DH for the NL so I could keep playing Chipper after he got to old to occupy the field. There is actual arbitration in the game now and the supplemental round in the draft is a good addition. No more getting screwed when a team that has already signed a type A guy signs your guy too. The contracts have better logic too. Guys that have never played above A ball will actually take minor league contracts. So will shitty former Major Leaguers. There do seem to be a shitload of injuries though, so I turned it down to Low. Speaking of injuries, they added a DL for each minor league team which is good. If you liked OOTP9, 10 is worth the upgrade.

Reading: Just finished Angels and Demons and I’m reading 3 Nights in August right now, about Tony LaRussa
Watching: Braves games, new movies, Daily Show
Listening: Dispatch, Phish, P Groove, Kings of Leon
Playing: I’ve started going back to COD4, Fallout 3 occasionally, and The Show 08. My team is completely stacked because I made Hanson, Medlen, Heyward, Freeman, and Schafer and they are all amazing. I always end up adjusting players skills so I got Justin and BJ Upton for 2 minor leaguers and made them really good. by soup du jour on Jul 4, 2009 11:16 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I did the first side mission of Broken Steel and then got caught up in Prototype (which is getting a little old, to be honest). How’d you like BS? Point Lookout looks very interesting.
by Smoltz's Beard on Jul 4, 2009 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Broken Steel is pretty awesome. Being able to get to level 30 has its advantages, but once you start leveling up again you find that most enemies are way too easy. The new ones the introduce (Super Mutant Overlord, Albino Radscorpion, Feral Ghoul Reaver, and Enclave Hellfire Trooper) attempt to rectify the situation. The Overlords are only trouble if they’re accompanied by a couple SM Masters; they’re not that bad, especially if you shoot the gun out of their hands. The Reavers are pretty tough and hit pretty hard. The Hellfire troopers aren’t bad at all. Current strategy against the Albinos: run away screaming like a little girl as I chuck mines and grenades behind me.
The quests for BS are pretty fun, and the whole expansion is worth the $10. I haven’t bought Point Lookout yet, but Mutant Rednecks? Yes, please.
by soup du jour on Jul 4, 2009 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I ran across an Albino Radscorpion during the side quest I was on…seemed much more difficult than it’s brothers. And I’m not sure exactly what kind of troopers they were, but I had a hell of a firefight with 3 guys that actually ended up getting my companion killed. RIP Charon.

Watching: I still don’t watch much tv aside from baseball. My favorite cartoon is still The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack if not obvious by my xbox avatar.
Playing: Still playing Left 4 Dead on almost a nightly basis, and still playing Resident Evil 5. Those are the only games in which I actually care about the achievements, and I have 50/50 in L4D, and 49/50 in RE5. I also recently completed the Chrono Trigger remake for the DS…
Listening: Ida Maria, Today the Moon, Tomorrow the Sun (Atlanta local), and a litany of older stuff on my ipod; Cheap Trick, Talking Heads. I got an HD tuner for my car, and it’s probably one of the best acquisitions ever.
After the holiday, I’m taking a brief baseball sabbatical for the meat part of the week; first a visit up to Raleigh/Durham, where I’ll be seeing the Durham Bulls host our Gwinnett Braves on the 8th, and if all goes well according to plan, a day trip to Tampa on the 9th to see the Toronto Blue Jays take on the Rays. If anyone’s in either of those areas and wants to say hi, I’m all for it.

Have you read World War Z? It seems as though your a fellow zombie fan, but if you haven’t checked it out I can’t recommend it any higher. Quality quality stuff, and its not fluff like Brooks’ Zombie Survival Guide (which I enjoyed as a quick laugh, but it didn’t really have any substance).
by soup du jour on Jul 4, 2009 12:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Oh yeah, I’ve got both the Survival Guide and World War Z. The latter definitely better of Brooks’ works. Often, I thought it would be a great mini-series or something on the Sci-Fi channel or something, with all the individualized stories, capable of being 30-60 minute episodes.

Reading:I just finished reading Steve Martin’s(yeah, wild and crazy guy, that Steve Martin) two novels, Shopgirl and The Pleasure of my Company. Pleasure of my Company is awesome, and hilarious in lots of places. Now I’m finally going to force myself to read Twilight, so if I don’t post hear anymore it because I turned into a 14 year old girl and am crying in the corner becasue my life sucks and I’ll never find my own vampire boyfriend.
Playing: Lord of the Rings Online, and a little Guitar Hero III and Aerosmith
Watching: Just picked up Season 1 of the original Transformers series. Waiting on the Blu-Ray release of the extended versions of the Lord of the Rings films. I watch Braves games every day of course, and NCIS most every day. Other stuff that I throw in the DVD player often: Firefly & Serenity, 300, the 2008 Iron Man & Hulk films, 2007 Transformers film, the Crow, and if I want something funny I usually go with anything from Kevin Smith, Major League, an American Pie movie, or National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.
Listening: mostly just listening to the MLB channel on XM when I’m in the car.

Reading: Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller. Don’t know why I’ve never heard of or read this before; it’s freaking genius.
Watching: The only shows that have new episodes on are Tosh.O and True Blood, which are both pretty great. I go see most of the movies that come out, even though about 80% of them aren’t very good.
Listening: Spinnerette, Brody Dalle’s new band; it’s nowhere near as good as The Distillers, but it’s interesting. And Manchester Orchestra has been a constant part of the rotation for a while now.
Playing: Nothing. Between trying to go to games and make an independent movie, I just can’t find time to play any video games. Alright, I occasionally play Punch Out and Mario Kart on my friend’s Wii.

The best show on television. I do try and catch an episode every now and then, but it’s absolute brilliance.
FYI, this is a highly Rec’d show for anyone, car-head or not. The dynamic interaction of the three hosts, Jeremy, Hammond and James is more than entertaining to keep amused anyone, whether they’re into cars or not. My favorite thread.
Reading: Nerd alert…I spent the majority of the my life curiously interested in Warhammer 40,000 and a few months ago a friend of mine let me borrow the Eisenhorn trilogy of novels and I was blown away. I’m all in now, currently on the second book of the Ravenor trilogy and I just ordered a bunch more from their website. If you enjoy sci-fi I highly suggest checking them out…it’s like a really violent Star Wars atmosphere.
Playing: Multiplayer…Gears of War 2 and COD 5. Campaign…Prototype and Sacred 2. Still need to play the two most recent DLC for Fallout 3. Games I’m most excited for…Darksiders and Mass Effect 2. Love video games.
Watching: Halfway through with that show Freaks and Geeks from back in the day. It’s hilarious seeing Jason Segal, Seth Rogan, and James Franco in the roles they play. Also finishing up the second season of Homicide: Life on the Street (good, but it’s no Wire), and just started the show Firefly. Hoping the new season of Always Sunny in Philadelphia is better than the last one…pretty much the only show I watch on TV these days, normally stick to DVDs.
Listening: Current ipod setup contains…Arcade Fire, Funeral; Death Cab for Cutie: Plans; Emery, In Shallow Seas We Sail; Gatsby’s American Dream, Volcano; The Get Up Kids, Something to Write Home About; Imogen Heap, Speak for Yourself; Manchester Orchestra, Mean Everything to Nothing; Portugal the Man, It’s Complicated Being a Wizard; Secondhand Serenade, A Twist in My Story; Silverstein, A Shipwreck in Sand; and Saosin, S/T…among others.
Sorry, may have gone a little overboard on the italics.

Interesting post
Reading:
How to Be President: What to Do and Where to Go Once You’re in Office by Stephen P. Williams (fun guide on what the President does every day). I should be done with that today if I get 1/2 an hour (the book is like 100 pages, I only read the first page) Also kind of reading the Golden Compass by Phil Pullman (very different thoughts on it since I read it way back in high school). Also reading Al Franken’s The Truth with Jokes. I have a thing with reading lots of books at the same time, because I am bad and get half way through a book, getting impatient and starting another that I want to read. I will generally then return to the old book a couple of weeks later and finish it… bad habit.
Listening to lots of 90’s music and waiting patiently for Rage Against the Machine to come out with some new stuff. Otherwise I listen to NPR on my car radio, and of course 90’s music (best. music. era. ever.) I also like 2000-2004 music (hard rock mostly because that’s what I like)
Playing the Wii because it is fun with groups of people, but with work I don’t have lots of time for video games…sad… Also playing Oblivion (the elder scrolls series) on my computer, not on the X-Box. Good game, but again with that time thing…
Watching my typical Comedy central lineup: Futurama, South Park, Daily Show, Colbert Report. Throw in some Man Vs. Food, and a healthy dose of ESPN. Braves Baseball is always on the list (MLB.TV because I don’t live anywhere near Atlanta).

Oh also
recently watched Transformers 2 and the Hangover.
Gotta throw out there that Michael Bay threw a shout out to his old fraternity in there, Psi U. I’m sure nobody but other Psi U Brothers noticed.
I own way too many movies, and watch too many movies. You name it, I probably own it or have seen it.

Reading: Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis
Playing: I still play Medal of Honor: Allied Assault on the PC. I realize that game came out nearly a decade ago, but I can’t get over it. Haha, thousands of people still play it online. It’s a blast. If you want a game to play, it’s ten bucks at Wal-Mart.
Watching: I watched the Pitchmen marathon on Discovery the other day. Billy Mays was absolutely hilarious. Fantastic sense of humor and a great guy. I love Family Guy, but it seems like they are running out of material. Braves everyday. And I have to say yall, I love The Nanny. Haha, shoot me now but it is a fantastic love story.
Listening: I listen mostly to contemporaty Christian music but some secular groups I like are Sister Hazel, We the Kings, Blink 182, The Early November

Screwtape letters is classic! Haven’t read it in awhile though. Really, anything by C.S. Lewis is quality reading.
Pitchmen…that was a great show. I got new respect for infomercials from it. I wonder what’s going to happen to the show now?

I remember I used to love Narnia...
And then eighth-grade English and overanalysis of the Christian undertones ruined it all for me.

Reading: A one volume history of World War I. I just finished reading a book about the summer of 1914, so it seemed like the natural development. Odds are I will reread my book about the Paris Peace Conference of 1919 next. I’m a history buff. I am wiling to admit this.
Playing: Nothing. I was playing NBA 2K9, but then my roommate moved out and away it went. So I before you a man without a game to play.
Watching: Seinfeld reruns. Also recently rewatched Wrath of Khan. To all you Star Trek haters, I am not a big fan, but that is a legitimately good movie independent of the “Trekkie” thing.
Listening: Alternating between Kings of Leon and Kanye West Pandora stations.

Or The Wrath of Cunt (Zach and Miri)

Reading: Can’t remember the last time I finished a book, but I read almost nonstop on the computer. Sabermetric baseball sites of course. Basketbawful has a great series of stories called Livin Large about his 300 lbs, 7 foot college roommate right now. And I always visit the Weston A. Price Foundation.
Watching: Professional Starcraft. PLAYGUUUUUU! I have a seemingly infinite queue of movies to watch, but next up is the Last King of Scotland.
Playing: I’m playing some of the games I couldn’t afford 10 years ago by not paying for them now. I finished Xenogears a week ago and I’ll hit up some Chrono Cross sometime.
Listening: I loved Pandora for a while, but it started getting old so I dug up some old music on my computer. A lot of Chinese songs I got back in High School and then some punk (or pop punk) like Blink 182, Hit the Lights, New Found Glory, etc.

Care to share any saber sites that are under the radar?

Under the radar, eh? Well I figure most people have heard of Beyond the Boxscore, Fangraphs, The Hardball Times, and Baseball Prospectus. Some of the team-specific ones are pretty good too like USS Mariner. DRays Bay is probably up there too, but I can’t say I read it.
Cubs f/x for pitch f/x stuff.
Stat Corner pretty much just for tRA.
Rally for Chone Smith’s WAR.
Basement Dwellers for Justin’s WAR.
Retrosheet for stuff before I was born.
Tom Tango for all kinds of goodies.

I see we read the same stuff. Good show.
