The Yankees tried to trade for Jeff Francoeur this winter, perhaps with the intention of flipping him elsewhere (Kansas City?), but were told no by the Braves because of Francoeur's popularity in his hometown of Atlanta. But Francoeur's continuing offensive struggles gave the Braves little choice.
Jon Heyman | SI.com
This is one of those notes from a national writer where I want to yell at him and say, "finish the damn story, and tell us what the Yanks were offering for him!" I bet half a dozen teams tried to trade for Francoeur. Hell, teams make all sorts of calls about all sorts of players every off-season (and season). In the grand scheme of things this type of reporting means very little.
Wow, someone on the Yankees mentioned they were interested in Frenchy. How about the 400 follow up questions that should be asked after that?
This is one of those notes which is now included in so many columns because "trade news" means lots of hits, so any hint at a rumor is passed along as news.

All I want to know...
is why the fuck hometown popularity made a .653 OPS worth keeping.

That article doesn't say he was given another chance.
It says he was popular.

probably 2 outfield seats and a half-eaten Babe Ruth hot dog…oh wait, that’s too much.
