I wouldn't go that far.
They probably got the idea from a reader. Hometown papers have a tendency to shower their heroes with adulation, no matter how deserved.
Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.

maybe im off base
I asked some others and I apparently am the only one who sees a problem with it. the paper i work for covers almost nothing but high school sports, but i cant imagine ever doing this for one of our athletes and i know none of my editors would ever go for it.

Yeah.
That’s probably where small local papers attract the most attention, since they’re probably not going to get exclusive-ish access to pro teams and whatnot that aren’t based nearby.
