Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 7/14

Sorry I didn't get yesterday's done, I didn't get home from work till 2:30. But I do want to bring up Julio Teheran's line:

8IP 4H 1R 1BB 8K 1HR 10-3 GB-FB

His groundball rate has been pretty crazy and he isn't walking very many batters. I have to say I am immensely impressed and am considering moving him up to #3 on my list. He has gone 7+ innings in each of his last 3 starts. The only thing I would like to see improve is his K/IP mark, but even that isn't bad, and one huge game could change that.

Gwinnett - All Star Break

Mississippi - All Star Break

Myrtle Beach 6, Wilmington 3

  • D. Linares 2-5 RBI, K
  • E. Mejia 2-3 2B, 2 RBI
  • B. Johnson 1-4 HR(6), 3 RBI, K

Benji Johnson has hit as many home runs in July as Cody Johnson has. To be fair, Cody has obviously been working on some stuff with his swing lately, and hopefully he is going to make the same kind of progress in the second half this year that he did last year. Mejia appears to be getting his swing back. I love that guy.

Greensboro 2, Rome 3

  • L. Sumoza 2-4 RBI
  • JJ Hoover 6IP 7H 2R 0BB 5K

Hoover keeps on doing his thing: getting a bunch of Ks and not walking anyone. I really like this guy, but I feel obliged to put some guys ahead of him because Hoover's body just isn't very projectable. He can get it into the low 90s but he probably won't go much higher than that. You can't ignore these stats though.

Danville - Off

GCL Braves 2, GCL Yankees 4

  • K. Rose 2-4

There really wasn't much in this game to make note. I find it funny how fast I lose faith in a guy. I was just looking at Jake Hanson's line thinking he just wasn't going to be any good. Then I realized he is just 19 years old. Seems like he has already been around a couple seasons and should be farther along. I'm dumb.

Tyrelle Harris has been really good so far in his debut, and a didn’t hear good things about him at all during the draft. He had like 5 Ks in 3 IP in relief of Hoover tonight.

Also, I gotta agree. I think Teheran is probably our #3 prospect at this point. Either him or Zeke.

Q: If on-base pct is so important then why don't they put it on the scoreboard? -Failcoeur

A: Because the Braves don't want to show their fans how bad you suck.

Yeah, I wouldn’t worry about Teheran’s K/9 just yet. He’s still really young, and as his secondary pitches become better, he’ll start to miss more bats.
You’re right, though, that GB rate is dreamy. If he can keep up that rate and start striking out more batters, watch out. His development is going to be extremely exciting to follow. He’s already got 2/3 of the things that really give a pitcher a high chance of success: good control and good groundball rate. Once he starts striking out more, hooooo boy. His ceiling as of right now is somewhere around the moon.

Were Freeman or The Jay Hey Kid picked for the all-star game?

I’m guessing not, but maybe I totally missed a post somewhere.

Fail.

I meant to say were anyone besides Freeman or Heyward chosen for an all star game?

Um, Zeke Spruill, Jesus Sucre, andJJ Hoover were in the SAL game, Heyward, Cody Johnson, and manager Rocket Wheeler (and not Freddie Freeman) were in the Cal-Carolina game, Wes Timmons, Luis Valdez, and Barbaro Canizares were in the AAA game, and JC Boscan, Matt Young, and Kyle Cofield were in the Southern League game.

The only problem I have with Teheran is......

He’s a little too hittable right now but he’ll learn how to put hitters away as he matures.

Teheran's problems are his splits

Lefties kill him. A .372 avg., 3 of the 4 walks drawn, and the only homer. He is striking them out more often than righties, but those are some horrible numbers. Against righties he is .164 and only 1 walk.

I wouldn’t worry about an 18 yr old righthander having trouble getting lefties out, especially when righties can’t hit him at all. He’s got time to learn lefties, and then, my god…

Keep in mind you’re talking about fewer than 50 LHB that he’s faced. I can’t really draw much from that split yet especially when he’s got a 61% GB% vs lefties and a .485 BABIP against him. Sure he gave up a HR to a lefty but that .372 BAA is going to come down, that’s a factor of balls finding holes at this point. You expect for lefties to hit better against him than righties do. I’d say at this point it’s too early to even bring up a platoon split concern. At least not when he has a 6/1 K-BB ratio, a 58% GB%, and a WHIP below 1.00. Statisically, he’s doing everything that we’d like to see him do except post gaudy K numbers, and at just 30 IP in, he still has time to catch up in that department as well.
