Towards the bottom of the blog entry he says that the Braves are considering Escobar and Prospects for Cabrera and Holliday.

Only hold up seems to be the Braves wanting the A's to take on some of Holliday's contract.

I think the Braves should spit on this deal. Escobar is hitting better than both of these two

Why would the Braves do that?

Escobar has been a pain, but Cabrera is a big downgrade with the bat and Holliday walks at the end of the year, so why does think make any sense for the Braves. This would be atypical and extremely stupid of Wren, so I’m calling bullshite on this rumor. Think it’s just some A’s rosterbation chatter and nothing more.

Only way

is if they were giving us back a SS prospect.

If they are tired of Escobar i KNOW they could get a better return than that.

Plus that gives us a roster like the Nationals with 5 OF’ers.

I wonder if the rumor is just that the Braves are trading them a young SS and the guy is assuming its Escobar. I say that because Escobars Value exceeds both of those players and him plus prospects is too much. However if its just a young SS like Diory then it makes more sense for the Prospects to be thrown in. Although it would make no sense for us to get Cabrera

Some rumblings from Athletics Nation
As far as additional prospects go I wouldn’t expect any of the big names in the system but maybe a guy like Medlen or even Schafer depending on how down on him the Braves are.
Just funny how braves fans think Escobar is the best SS in baseball and that the A’s would need to send prospects too. If this type of trade goes down it will not be until July 31st when the bids for Holliday go crazy.

Wow, too bad I have to wait a day to post there. Just to clarify for them, does anyone think Escobar is the best SS in baseball? Or have you heard any Braves fan make that claim?

The two picks as the above poster mentions would be nice, maybe we could use one of those picks to sign the 3b of the future. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see Holliday in a Braves Uni, but SS is such an important position and yunel is outperforming both Holliday and Cabrera right now.

by Cracker! on Jul 14, 2009 2:36 PM EDT reply actions

I’d consider this trade if the A’s tossed in Bailey or Ziegler. With Holliday, we’d address our offensive and defensive shortcomings in left field. Cabrera scares me because players his age typically decline so that we can look at his poor defensive first half, compare it to last season’s great performance, and maybe it’s not a small sample aberration. That would put me off the deal because he’s a replacement player without being +5-10 defensively.

Everyone agrees that we need a bat, but we also need better defense. Right field and first base have been the only above-average defensive positions in the first half. Getting Holliday and a non-declining Cabrera would greatly improve the defense in left field and at shortstop.

I think for the Braves to make this deal you have to be absolutely sure Cabrera hasn’t lost a couple steps afield and that you don’t send anything more significant than Escobar. He’s a 3 WAR player for the next four seasons; that’s a very valuable asset. There’s no reason for us to toss them even a B prospect.

Agreed

I think that’s the most rational assessment so far. Nice post.

I’ll also note that the marginal wins gained by making this trade better be extremely valuable if we’re trading Escobar. The draft picks are worth ~$10 million or so and Escobar’s worth ~$40 million. That’s a $30 million shortfall that’s only made up if we make the playoffs.

Cabrera won’t net draft picks. There’s a clause in his contract where he can’t be offered arb.

by graf on Jul 14, 2009 3:13 PM EDT reply actions

?

I think that clause states he can’t be offered arbitration by the A’s so if he is traded then that clause has no binding I wouldn’t bet my house on that but I would believe that to be true

Athletic Nation A's fan. Long Post.

I followed the Braves back in the Dale Murphy/Joe Torrie years when TBS was the only consistent way to watch a ballgame. Let me say this “Blog” is really put together well. Talking Chop has much more information than I’m used to seeing.

Alot of people over there have been trying to figure out a way to make this trade happen. I’ll give you some conclusions.

1) Matt Holliday was acquired to be traded at the deadline. He was suppose to be hitting .300+, 15+HR, 50+ RBI and OPS .900+. We knew there would be a park adjustment so we didn’t think he would go all 2007 on us when he did .340, 36, 137, 1.000. but we were hoping for better than what he’s giving as he is not learning the pitchers very fast either.

2) We want to trade Holliday to a desperate contender.

I don’t think the Braves qualify as desperate or a contender. Your kind of in it, and won’t know for another 15 games if you should buy. Philadelphia and S.F are both 10 games over .500. You have 8 other teams besides them above (5) you or around (3) you. Unless you go on a huge hot streak quickly (not very likely), you aint buying, its over. If you do go on a huge hot streak, that will get you into the range of the top four going for two spots. Those are the teams that were suppose to overpay for Matt Holliday. Those teams were suppose to dream about him resigning and staying many more years because he liked it there.

Matt Holliday didn’t do his part to really get what we wanted. So now we have to hope teams see what he used to do and sell them on the upside. He has become damaged goods. Here’s the upside.

A) He should hit much better in the N.L because he knows the pitching.
B) he should hit a little better in Atlanta. The Coliseum ranked 26th and 29th in 2007&08 in Park Factor . Turner field 24th and 9th. (not sure why such a big discrepancy, my source could be wrong).
C)The change of scenery couldn’t hurt as he seems to have been bitter about the whole trade all year long. He will still hate Oakland for it, and magically hit like its 2007 again to punish them for there impudence and get that big contract like he planned all along.

Oakland will get 2 High drafts picks if we don’t trade him so that’s why we are asking for two top level prospects at a minimum. Basically we have to like what we get back better than a #1 and a supplemental pick. That’s also what your trading for in addition to him getting you to the playoffs now.

Oakland would love to get Yunel Escobar. He is the best major league SS known to be on the market. He’s good and can improve, he’s cheap, he’s under team control for 4 1/2 more years. The holy grail of pickups. You should ask for and receive a lot of compensation from Oakland or anyone else that wants him.

we should pay all of Holliday’s salary. We only throw in Cabrera because you need a SS after we get Yunel, but he’s really not worth anything much and we should pay his salary too if you want Cabrera and if that gets it done. It would basically be buying Yunel off you for $10 million. Our payroll is $62 Million with only $20 mill in Non-Arb contracts in 2010 and $4 mill in non-arb’s in 2011. Even thought we are small market, we can afford this. Its not my money however, but it seems like this is the plan.

You should not want Cabrera as part of the deal however. You should want other piece or pieces to make the deal even. You want a reliever, we have a bunch. We should give up just about any of them besides Bailey. You want prospects, we have a bunch. We should give up a good one if that gets the deal done. Really, you could be thinking about not even taking Holliday and see what you can get otherwise as far as a starting pitcher. Cabrera’s contract states “Club will not offer Arbitration after 2009 season if Cabreara ranks as a Type A free Agent” pretty clear. He felt being a Type A hurt his chances to sign a big contract with that team losing a #1, and he is right, it does. Even if you payed him a few Million to drop that clause so you could get those extra draft picks (how’s that for draft strategy, we sign top latins to millions so why not buy extra

There are a few more unlikely scenario’s. If your out of it and really want to trade Yunel, a three way with Holliday going to the third team could get it done. Or the A’s might go for a package of prospects themselves for Holliday and leave you with Yunel and the picks.

The Park Factor from last year...

has something to do with the fact that our pitching was godawful, probably.

Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.

Anyways as you have seen in the Past, our G.M. has made no one untouchable

and we do really want Yunel so you could get something else for sure, but I just don’t think the Braves are the ones to be biting on Holliday nor should you unless you get a few other major pieces and salary. Out of curiosity, if you were in contention, did want Holliday and wouldn’t give up Yunel, who do you have at SS as prospects for us to bite on?

we have no one at SS/3B even close to the majors

We have this stud Chris Burke

Just look at his minor league numbers, he will be great. Maybe if you pay Holidays salary, we would give you Burke for Holiday straight up.
