Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 7/11
Gwinnett 5, Charlotte 4
- R. Gorecki 2-4 2B, BB, K
- C. Burke 2-3 BB, 2 SB(4)
- T. Redmond 7IP 5H 2R 3BB 6K
Todd Redmond has been pretty bad this year but I am guessing it is almost completely because he has been incredibly homer prone. He has given up 17 HRs in 93.2 IP. I think he has probably been a little better than his raw numbers indicate, but he is an extreme fly ball pitcher so he doesn't have a whole lot of room for error.
Mississippi 3, Birmingham 4- W. Cabrera 2-4 RBI
- JC Boscan 3-4 2B, RBI
- J. Lyman 6.1IP 5H 3R 1BB 3K
Jason Heyward is away for the Future's Game and probably won't be back till Monday at the earliest. It has been an eventful week for him. The offense didn't really step up with him out of the lineup with the 1-4 hitters going 0-15. Sweet.
Myrtle Beach 6, Frederick 12
- M. Fisher 2-4 2B, RBI, 2K
- C. Johnson 1-3 RBI, BB, K
- C. Kimbrel 1IP 0H 0R 1BB 3K
Craig Kimbrel has strung together 4 consecutive games without allowing a run, his longest such streak while pitching for Myrtle Beach. This guy can just be filthy and I can't wait to see him rise up a couple more levels. David Francis, a fringe top 25 prospect for me, got rocked pretty hard in this one and hasn't been very good in his few games in the Carolina League so far.
Rome 1, Greenville 4
- C. Shehan 2-4 2B, K
- D. Delgado 5.2IP 7H 4R 2BB 9K
So here is a question, who is the better prospect: Dimaster Delgado or Randall Delgado? Randall was better known coming into the season and he is a full year younger but Dimaster has been better in about half as many starts as Randall. I'll be honest I don't know much about Dimaster outside of his stats this season and at least I have seen some scouting reports about Randall. I'd take Randall right now, but will keep a special eye towards Dimaster. They aren't far apart on my list.
Danville 7, Burlington 5
- LV Wate 1-3 2B, BB, SC(10)
- M. Jones 2-5 2B, RBI, K
- RSF 1-4 HR(5), 2 RBI, BB
- T. Stovall 5IP 4H 1R 3BB 6K
Ho-Hum, another game and another hit for RSF. His AVG did drop down to .451 in this one though. LV Ware has been killing the ball for Danville with 10 XBH so far and a 10/11 in SB. The problem is that he is 22 and is in his second run in the Appy League. He started the year with Rome but just couldn't cut it, but has been murdering baseballs since the Appy season started. Time to put up or shut up in Rome. Tyler Stovall has been wildly effective so far for the Braves. If the guy can get his walks under control he could be frightening to face.
GCL Braves 1, GCL Phillies 2
You know, looking at this game there just wasn't anything worth writing about.

I love LV Ware. I hope he gets another chance in Rome this year. I agree, his long term prospects aren’t great if he doesn’t get it clicking quick, but there are a lot of things to like about him as a player.

I think Burke should replace Blanco on the squad because Church can spell McLouth and Burke is a more universal backup type.

Did a quick check on Locke and Hernandez since the trade. Gorkys is hitting .254 with a ton of Ks at AA. Wonder if the Braves saw something in him aticipating such a performance. Locke is 1-2 with ERA near 5. Very mediocre numbers.
Morton will be around for along time though…

I dunno about a long time, but he’s probably the one I didn’t want to give up on the deal, preferring to sub in JoJo…which is probably why the Pirates wanted him in the first place.

Really, Locke is pitching about the same as he was for MB. His ERA is over a run lower, but he’s allowing more hits, ending up with his WHIP upping negligibly from 1.59 to 1.62. And, he’s actually cut his walks in half. Giving his numbers out of context doesn’t really do much.
Now yes, Gorkys has been a good bit worse since the trade, with his OPS dropping from .748 to .671. And he’s only 2 for 6 in SB attempts.

Saturday night Danville/Burlington.
I live in Charlotte and had watched Gwinnett lose to the Knights on Friday. Since Redmond was pitching Saturday, I decided to drive up to Burlington for the game last night. Great little park very much like Danville’s. RSF is everything you’ve read about. Big 1B with an even bigger bat. We accidentally sat on the Royals side and had just said “let’s go to the Braves side at the end of the inning.” Then he hit a HR that looked like it went back to Danville. He had two defensive miscues at the end of the game, but they didn’t hurt the score and it’s really not that uncommon in the Appy. Stovall was impressive. The walks were a bit much but he really took care of B-ton’s hitters on the whole. While they’re not as strong as the D-Braves of 3-4 yrs ago, there are a couple guys here that should move up and make some noise.
