Holliday or Dye?

I know we finally got rid of Failcoeur, which can only help the outfield, but we will probably need a left fielder next year.  Let's face it, Heyward probably won't be 100% MLB-ready on opening day next year, so we will probably need to sing another bat for left.  The two best corner outfield options would be Matt Holliday and Jermaine Dye.  I would love for us to sign both of these guys, but we just won't have the money to do it.  Plus, Heyward will definately be ready by 2011.  So my plan would be to put one of them in left next year, and then when Heyward is ready, put him in right.  Holliday is definately overrated, but he is still the better all-around player.  And he is several years younger than Dye.  But Dye would come cheaper and is the better home run hitter that we desperately need, although he is aging and will probably drop off at least a little next year.

I think maybe Dye would cost more

But id rather have holliday. He’s younger, and it would be less risky to give him a long term deal. With all the lefties coming up in the minors, we could use a righty in the heart of the line up over the next few years.

Holliday is a Boras client

…and overrated. Dye would cost less.

My two favorite football teams are the Bears and whoever's playing the Packers.

It would have to be a short-term deal

since Heyward is getting close.

Why?

The only solid, everday outfielder we have is McLouth. As much as they might help us out today, I just don’t get the feeling Diaz, GA or Church are in our plans for the future.

We could have Dye in RF next year, and then move him over to LF when the Jay-Hey Kid is ready.

And add me to the list that think Holiday is a little overrated and will cost too much.

If the sox declined him, think he’d go for a 2 year/18 million deal?

Church is under our control for another two years...

He should be reasonably priced, and he’s at worst a league-average hitter who gives you above-average corner OF defense and plays a decent CF in a pinch. I don’t know why we wouldn’t hold on to him.

Holiday will get over $15 million a year and Dye probably gets at least $10 million.

Hmmm…the big contracts that are expiring are GA, Soriano (who we better f’ing re-sign), Gonzo, and possibly Huddy w/ his option.

I really wish we could keep Huddy and Javy, but i doubt it. That $10-12 could add a bat that we really, really need. Plus, a rotation of Huddy, Javy, Lowe, Jurrjens and Hanson just wouldn’t be fair.

Huddy is for $12M/Javy V. is for $10.5
GA is $2.5M
Soriano is around $6M
Gonzo is around $5-7M

So around $25 million or so.

Then you gotta add in raises to players, along with arbitration (is anyone besides Diaz, KJ and Kotch arb-eligable)? Im pretty sure we don’t have any guys moving into their 1st year of arbitration.

My guess would be $22M or so to add a closer, a bat (i’d prefer a LF/RF bat) and another 7th/8th inning guy.

by Scott Coleman on Jul 12, 2009 12:32 AM EDT up reply actions

ummmm...

we have 7th/8th inning guy in Medlen…

The closer could be Luis Valdez (dude’s been pretty good so far this year); but if he falters he and Medlen COULD handle it.

If we let Gonzo and Soriano walk (which is looking more and more likely), we get 2 more 1st round or supplemental round picks. And in this day and age, they’re QUITE valuable.

So, we have around $20 million to add a Bat and MAYBE a closer. I would prefer 2 Bats, actually. One starter and one 4th/platoon guy. In a perfect world we’d sign:

Jason Bay: 5 years / $85 million
Chone Figgins: 3 years / $21 million

and we would not pick up Huddy’s option. I know it’s cold, but it’s a business.

by apoxonbothyourhouses on Jul 12, 2009 7:04 AM EDT up reply actions

7 million a year for a platoon player that has speed and thats it? Uh, right.

by bigjoe on Jul 12, 2009 10:41 AM EDT up reply actions

Figgins?

We have Infante, Prado, K. Johnson, and Conrad; why do we need figgins?

Prado- is our utility infielder and depending on the rest of the year could be our 2B outright in 2010.
Conrad- may or may not become the utility infielder if Prado starts. The jury is still out.
Infante- is another utility infielder with a good bat.

We need options with Chipper only getting older. Those three give us the flexibility for injuries. I also think that they give us the ability to let Norton go.

Kelly Johnson becomes more valuable internally if he picks it up and/or we trade any of the above mentioned for a OF/1B power bat in the offseason or August. The infield situation should shake out by season end. However, at the end of the day we have internal options to fill our needs.

Outfield:

So that leaves McClouth, Diaz, Church, and Schafer for next years consideration.

McClouth in CF
Schafer in RF or flip them depending on whats the best fit. I think Schafer will pull it together by next spring training. You have Diaz and Church as possible 4th outfielders. Church also has the potential to start as the everyday RF depending on how he reacts to Atlanta. Either way you have your starting CF and RF for 2010 with Diaz as the 4th outfielder.

Thus we will be shopping for a corner RH OF bat next off season and not figgins.

If anything we let Soriano, Gonzo, GA, Hudson, and Norton all go and shop for Closer,OF power, and scrap relief arms like O/Flat. If we keep Soriano we will only have money for an OF bat and we will find a relief arm somewhere from the scraps.

Were in a good position in 2010 if we play our cards right.

by Charmin519 on Jul 12, 2009 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Really?

You think Medlen’s performance thus far merits making him a setup guy?

Valdez has just now pitched in the majors period. I sure as shit don’t want him as our closer next year.

Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.

by MichaelProcton on Jul 13, 2009 2:25 AM EDT up reply actions

Wait and see

I’d like to see how the Diaz/Church RF spot works out before we spend all of our funds on an aging no glove OF (whom I would love to have at the right price) or spend even more money and year comitment on a perhaps overrated very good OF.

I wouldn’t mind going into next year with McLouth, Schafer, Diaz, and Church as our outfielders. That would allow us to keep Huddy and sign late inning relievers and not block Heyward in the process.

by bbxxj on Jul 12, 2009 12:29 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

if we keep Huddy, what are we going to do with KK and the 15 million we still owe him?

No idea? Huddy goes to the pen?

I like the idea of trying him out in late and close situations later this summer to see how he does. I would
aproach him with something like a 2/20 to be our closer/ace in the hole.

But really I have no idea.

by bbxxj on Jul 12, 2009 12:53 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Not a bad idea but not everyone can pull a Smoltz.

If he is affective at that role and would consider a 2/16 million contract then Wren just hit the lotto. He gets his closer picks up two picks with gonzo and soriano leaving. He also has about 10-12 million for an OF bat. However, if he picks up an OF bat then either Diaz or Church will go.

There will be no need for a (Bay- pickup OF scenario), McClouth, Schafer, Diaz, and Church in the OF.

When you have an IF of Chipper, Yunel, Prado, Infante, K. Johnson, Conrad, Kotchman, McCann, and Ross.

Jason Bay

He is the impact bat we need.I think the team budget is around 85M,so trade JV and sign Bay in the off season!
we still have a very competitive rotation Dlowe/JJ/Hanson/KK/Medlen or JoJo

don’t pick up Hudson’s option. Saves the same amount of money.

Bay

I’m not completely sure about this, but if we don’t pick up Huddy’s option, let don’t re-sign GA, and let Soriano and/or Gonzo go, then maybe we have enough for him. That would give us an outfield of Bay, Schafer, McLouth. As long as Schafer does what he is expected to, that is a pretty good outfield.

by scottyboy10 on Jul 12, 2009 7:05 PM EDT reply actions

Probably Church over Schafer at this point. Bay, Church in the corners and McLouth in CF.

If you look at the payroll, we easily will have the money to get one big bat in the off-season. We just need to move one SP (prob. Vazquez) and only bring back one of Soriano and Gonzalez (preference being Sori). We can go to about 15 or 16 million a year then. I prefer Holliday big time if we’re looking for a long term solution. In a neutral park like turner, he’s an .850 OPS guy imo with 20-25 HR power. But what people never realize about Holliday is he plays far above average LF defense, Dye would be a major liability in the field. Holliday is worth more but Dye might make sense just because of the shorter, smaller deal. Only thing you guys missed is that IIRC Dye has an option that the white sox will surely pick up for next year

Actually he is, he’s incredibly overrated. He’s playing in a much more hitter friendly home stadium than Holliday (oakland is one of the biggest pitcher’s parks) and yet they have both been worth 2 WAR on the year. They’ve been equals this year, Holliday’s worst and Bay’s second best. Put Holliday and Bay in a neutral park and Holliday is the much better player
