Around SBN: Following UFC 146 Loss, Jason 'Mayhem' Miller 'Done' in UFC

He apparently returned to Atlanta today to have his elbow examined (I guess there are no doctors that we trust in Colorado). Frank Wren says that Gonzo should be able to pitch when play resumes after the All-Star break.

I wonder if it could have something to do with Gonzalez being used in every other game. He is tied for third in baseball in appearances with our own Eric O'Flaherty at 45, trailing Peter Moylan, who his first with 47. This bullpen overuse is going to come back to bite us in the second half.

I would not be surprised if this turned into something much bigger. He’s been used a ton and his elbow blew out pretty fast the first time. Expecting the worst, but hoping it’s just a hiccup from the overuse this season.

my biggest problem with bobby. Not in enough trust in the entire bullpen so it always leads to overuse

I usually don’t get riled up about this sort of thing, but there’s no excuse for such an obvious error in judgement by Bobby. I’d take a megaphone to the game and scream into the dugout if I thought it would actually make a difference.

What a fucking surprise.

not too surprised here. New York Mets have the same problem of overusing guys, which have caused there best guys to become fallible. The Mets’ Defense blunders isn’t helping matters.

Bobby

Not really a surprise though

Ugh. Sorting by games appeared in by pitcher leads to an EPIC facepalm. Its not overuse of the bullpen; our starters have been doing fine, going deep enough into the ballgames. Its the abuse of those 4 pitchers (Gonzo, Soriano, Moylan, and O’Loogy) that’s going to destroy the pen.

Grrrrrr

This sucks, dammit. Hope he’s ok.

Bullpen arms getting overused? What else is new. This is so 2001.

I hope none of you are the same folks bitching a couple of years ago because we kept running out guys like Carlyle, Yates, Paronto, etc., while our often used good relievers got a much needed rest.
In a 1 or 2 run game, I want no one out there but Moylan, Gonzo, and Soriano. Now in 3 run leads or more, I can see the criticism. Relievers are the most fickle players of all. You run them while they’re hot because it won’t be long until they’re going their best Dan Kolb impression. Of course there are exceptions, but they’re few and far between.

I see your point...

But using the same arms for 3 consecutive games… over… and over… and over… and over again… I mean come on.

There just comes a time when you KNOW you are getting too many of those 1-2 runs games and you just have to depend on other arms “for at least a game” to give your guys a breath. That would be like getting Brian McCann 10 straight games catching… it’s just NOT alright. If you get three straight close games, you have to give other guys a chance. That is the problem… not using them in close games, but using them in too many straight close games. They are, after all, human.

Mac has started the last seven days in a row.

And 12 of the last 13. You do what you have to to try and win ballgames.

It is a bit of a head scratcher

When the Brave’s have a lead going into 7th inning and the starting pitcher can’t go anymore, Bobby will 90% of the time (it seems) run Moylan and/or EOF then follows with Gonzo and Soriano almost EVERY night when the Braves have the lead.

Time for him to give guys like Acosta (which he has to an extent lately), Logan, and Medlen (when he isn’t spot starting). And as successful Valdez has been in Gwinnett, it would not surprise me if he doesn’t even appear in one game until Hanson returns (Bobby philosophy).

by RaffyGonzo on Jul 12, 2009 12:31 AM EDT reply actions

Medlen's been mediocre; Logan's ALWAYS been bad in the bigs...

Why would he trust them. Would you rather those schmucks blow the game (like Acosta did yesterday) or at least give our best players the chance?

The Dodgers are fast running their bullpen into the ground too. Torre and Cox have somewhat of a history of this but then again, who has won more than Cox and Torre?

Good reading...solutions?

It seems almost every club is looking for middle relief…The Braves have some capable but It seems we have lost some to injury already and Bobby has not developed the trust in the replacements…so what do you have left? The un Wholey 4…by that I mean at least two have come back from surgeries…Has our starting pitching produced any Complete Games?…One or two? We are going to have a lot more 1&2 run games till our offense produces more runs…which may be coming around now or a couple of our starters will have to last more than 6.
