Braves trade Jeff Francoeur to division rival Mets for Ryan Church

Wow! Wow!

The Atlanta Braves have traded the once-Golden-Boy, Jeff Francoeur, to the division rival New York Mets for outfielder Ryan Church. I am beside myself. I mean, I knew the Braves would get rid of Francoeur somehow, but I didn't think they'd get rid of him to their biggest rival. The Mets must have indeed been the last resort for Frank Wren.

Church doesn't represent a real upgrade in the power department, though he certainly uses more of his ability than Francoeur does, but he is an equal defender and is better at getting on base. Here is a comparison of their stats for this year:

G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB K SB CS AVG OBP SLG
2009 - Jeff Francoeur 82 304 32 76 12 2 5 35 12 46 5 1 .250 .282 .352

G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB K SB CS AVG OBP SLG
2009 - Ryan Church 67 232 26 65 16 0 2 22 17 36 6 2 .280 .332 .375

On first blush I like this trade. We get a better hitter, even if we did have to give up the once-face of the franchise (but that ship sailed a while ago). The risk here is that Francoeur figures something out and comes back to bite us time and again, but the odds of that happening are pretty slim if you've watched Francoeur over the last couple of years.

Good trade by Wren. While we would have saved about half a million in the deal, apparently the Braves also had to send the Mets cash to cover the differences in salaries. Wow! Jeff Francoeur is so bad, that we had to pay someone to take him. Still, good trade by Wren.

Looking at the split-stats for Church this year at the Mets new ballpark, which is playing like a pitchers park, he does a whole lot better away from there. His home slash splits are .216/.297/.278, while his road splits are .326/.359/.444, with 13 of his 16 doubles coming on the road. That makes this deal look even better. We could be getting a hitter who is just itching to get out of Citi Field.

Cash also going to the Mets

so we don’t end up paying any less. The thing that a lot of fans are ignoring though, is that Church has been fine away from Citi field with a .326/.359/.444 line and it’s been that cavernous home park that has killed him. If we get this production from him for the rest of the year then this is a great trade.

I think this proves that Frank Wren is committed to trying to win the division. While this may not be a blockbuster trade, this and the McLouth trade are good steps towards addressing our weaknesses to make a run for October. Is Church going to win the World Series for us? No, but he he’s an upgrade and I think the trade indicates that we’re going to be aggressive instead of rolling over at 5 GB days before the All-Star break.

Frank Wren.

Seriously, anyone that thinks that Wren is a bad GM for whatever reason is starting to run out of reasons to do so…

While certainly trending down, Church’s ISO this has been very adversely affected by Citi Field. I mean, look what it has done to David Wright! He’ll most certainly pick it up at Turner Field and be at least better than a .700 OPS guy, and hopefully above the .785 mark he posted in ’08.

While he’s only got 1 HR away from Citi Field, his away splits are .326/.359/.444. That’s an .800 OPS! From a right fielder!? How is that possible?

Maybe we can expect that from him.

Who would've thought 2 years ago we would trade Frenchy for Ryan Church?

Back in ’05 and ’06, nothing short of Albert Pujols or Johan Santana would be acceptable.

Funny how things change.

Thanks for the occasional cheer Frenchy. You won our hearts over as a wide-eyed 22 year old rookie…and then you proceded to crush our hopes and dreams of you in RF the next 10 years.

Good Luck in NY.

And if you hit a HR against us, you better be ready for the beer about to be thrown on you.

Mets GM Omar Minaya had this to say in an impromptu news conference announcing the trade:

This had nothing to do with not liking Ryan Church, but, one thing we like about Franceiour is the amount of games he plays.

How bad is a guy when your biggest upside is that you don’t get hurt a lot.

Quotes and moves like this make me VERY happy Omar Minaya works for the Mets.

And most of them are in the major leagues!!!

Pete Rose was actually banned from baseball for teaching Jeff Francoeur how to play. He made up the gambling stuff to hide his shame.

by VivaLosBravos on Jul 11, 2009 2:40 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, doesn't get hurt...

Or plays through the pain. It’s one thing not to get hurt and play 140 games a year. But for Frenchy (or any player) to tell the manager he’s ready to play every single day for multiple years, that’s a quality worth lauding. They got a little impatient with Church’s injuries (which really started with Yunel’s knee to the head.)

Ryan Church, I love you if all you do is the following:

1) Recognizing which one is the pitcher and which one is the catcher.
2) Don’t attempt to bat lefty out of the right handed batter’s box.
3) Don’t crap in the infield dirt during innings (between is probably okay).
4) Show up most days with a glove.
5) Don’t punch Chipper in the groin 50% of the time.

And seriously

Why would you need a smoke screen to bring up Heyward anyway? It’s not like they weren’t allowed to just call him up to the team anytime they wanted. Just call him up, tell him he’s playing right field and batting 6th/7th, and be done with it.

I don't like the trade

I really didn’t like this trade. Frenchy is he bad, yes. I think he can be fixed, and I thought A. Jones could be also. I would have rather seen him sent down and let him work it out down there. Yes he may only turn out to a 15-20 HR guy with around a 700 to 750 OPS but that is aceptable. Frenchy is an athlete and I really think people need to think this through and not just be happy he is gone. I have liked the moves Wren has made so far, but not too big on this move. Yes he may have just need a change. I think Wren talked to scouts and they thought that Jeff could not be fixed, they are the pros not me. I think the trade will end out alright, I hope church doesn’t not have any problems with his previous concussion.

by atlbravesfn12 on Jul 10, 2009 9:43 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

How is a 700 to 750 OPS acceptable for a power corner position? Not to mention that Franceour had become a whiny bitch about things.

Haha I know i was a little off with the OPS, but 750-800 is nice. I like the amount of doubles Church has, but not the amount of HRs. I hope his arm is good, and i wish he was a righty hitting. I don’t really like the move, but I can live with it. I just would hate to see Frenchy trn it around. It would be awful that the bravse have had Mark Derosa, Jason Marquis, A. Jones, Davies, Frenchy. It doesn;t look good for the braves and it just may be time for a new hitting coach.

by atlbravesfn12 on Jul 10, 2009 10:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

just look at his slash stats…he is hitting for a better average, with a better OBP, better OPS and better SLG than Frenchy.

Yeah true about Citi Field

I just hope Frenchy is released/ non-tenured after this year and the Braves can pick him up with a a minor league deal. Then have him work in minors with a hitting coach. I am unsure if we have any great minor league hitting coaches, but I am sure they can work with Frency. What a story this would be, even though it is not likely. I just hope Church can do the job.

I agree. If he does somehow turn it around up there, it wouldn’t matter, because it wouldn’t have happened here, not with TP, not with the pressure. If he turns it around, it’s because "change of “scenery,” or whatever. It’s not because we didn’t give him a chance. We gave him more chances than he deserved, frankly.

I LOVE this trade

First off I have had an odd liking of Church when he was a Nat and a Met. Its irrational but anyways.

So this year he has a .280/.332/.375.707 line and as gondeee has said that itself is much better than Frenchy.

But his numbers look much much better when you platoon him with Diaz/Infante and take him away from Citi:

Away .326/.359/.444/.804
vsRHP .310/.360/.424/.784

Who would have thought we could trade Frenchy STRAGHT UP for a hitter who should hit over .300 with ~800OPS in the role we will ask for him, with good defense, and doesn’t add salary? Wren is a freaking genius.

by bbxxj on Jul 10, 2009 11:08 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Not irrational. He’s been a pretty good hitter ever since he was an EXPO, and when he’s completely healthy, he’s been nearly awesome. He was the Mets’ best hitter last year for two months, before Yunel ninja-kicked him in the head. Just check his 2008 Pre-and-Post-All Star splits. He OPSed .882 before the All Star break.

In 2008, aside from a flukey season from Dmitri Young, he was the best hitter for the Nationals, as well. Zimmerman had a bit of a down year, and they didn’t really have anything else, but still. He’s a good hitter, and a good defensive player, and the only preventing him for being better known is a lack of pure power and some tough luck injuries.

They are all pretty much equally awesome.

My favorite was this gem from Baseball Think Factory.

If you made a trade this one-sided with your little brother as a child, you parents would instantly negate the trade and send you to your room. It’s like giving your little brother an empty can of Fanta for his Boba Fett. Now, Ryan Church isn’t as awesome as Boba Fett, but I don’t have to pay a million dollars to an empty can of Fanta either. Ryan Church is not a star, but I wouldn’t trade minor-league shortstop David Church for Francoeur either and he’s a player I just made up.

This is so true

for my 5th birthday, my brother (who was 10 years older than me) got me a whole box of Hoops basketball cards. Inside the box, I pulled a Michael Jordan UNC card. At the time, Scottie Pippen was my favorite player (for some unknown 5-year-old-child reason) and my brother immediately traded me a normal, every day, run of the mill Scottie Pippen card for that MJ one…I have held him in disdain ever since!

Follow up story

It must run in the family though, because several years later, I traded away my household chore of doing the dishes every other week (my younger brother and I switched off) to my younger brother. In return I gave him $25.

Yes, I paid him $25 to do the dishes for a whole year. The best part of this is that he thought it was a good deal, and made the same deal the next year for a slight increase to $50!

This trade just surprised the hell out of me. I mean, I assume that Frenchy won’t figure it out (he had better not become a good hitter all of a sudden), but to the METS?! Holy Shit!

by Andy Braves Fan on Jul 10, 2009 11:59 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Wow

I knew this was coming, and I even hoped for it, with a sort of clinical detachment. But seeing it happen is another thing.

I am torn. From a baseball perspective, this is an awesome move. There is about a 97% chance we fleeced the Mets on this one. But that being said, I am going to miss Frenchy’s wild-pitch striking out first pitch swinging double A demoting .650 OPS’ing ass.

Expect a full length fan post from me (and likely others) in the near future on this, but Frenchy was the future face of this franchise for several years, and it wasn’t until this year that I finally gave up that dream. And lets face it: Frenchy sucks at baseball, but hes a good dude. Every game I’ve been too he has been cool with the fans, always smiling, even when he is sucking.

And we can’t even wish him well, because he is a met. I am deeply conflicted.

Can't say I dislike this one.

I feel kinda bad for Frenchy, though. I mean, he had to know it was coming, but to a division rival where he’ll see us several times a year? I’m sure he was hoping he’d end up in Seattle or something.

But I’ll take present-day Ryan Church over present-day Frenchy. The only thing about Frenchy I’ll really miss is the arm, so long as it’s not attached to a bat.

Can Frenchy hit Lowe?

(From Braves site) TIDBITS:

Cox announced his post-All-Star rotation on Friday. Derek Lowe will pitch against the Mets on Thursday and be followed by Jurrjens, Kenshin Kawakami, Javier Vazquez and Tommy Hanson. … During his career, Church has hit .325 (13-for-40) against the Rockies and .412 (7-for-17) at Coors Field. … Church will wear No. 25 with the Braves. … Jones has five hits, including three homers, in 10 career at-bats against Marquis.

So Frenchy’s debut in a Mets uniform in Turner Field will be against Lowe.

That's great and all

But more importantly, what number is Francoeur going to wear for New York?

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

Zero risk

Not only is this a great trade but I disagree with anyone who thinks there is any risk at all associated with it. There is zero risk to the Braves here. Even if he miraculously becomes a useful player, he would have never done that with Atlanta and anyone who says otherwise hasn’t been watching him over the past couple of seasons. It’s an immediate addition by subtraction and is also another addition by subtraction to the Mets as well.

Absolutely.

If it only takes the option away from Bobby of running him out there 5-6 nights a week, that’s a net positive.
