Frenchy has been traded!

Jeff Francouer has been traded to the Muts for Ryan Church.  Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy.  No more FYF.  Praise the Lord.  Does this move make us much better?  Probably not, but at least we don't have to put up with Frenchy's sorry ass any more.  Church might actually make us a better team and he for sure will lower our frustration level.  I'm sooooo happy!!  What do you guys think about Ryan Church.  Is he an upgrade?

Not sure if it is an updgrade or not, but the moves makes some sense as it seems like the Mets have been down on Church ever since he and Escobar collided last year.

A change of scenery may prove good for both players…..let’s just hope it does not come back to bite us being the he was traded to the Mets.

y r Braves fans so picky?

this is insane. We got rid of Francoeur, got an outfielder who will probably slug around .440 with us. That is exactly what we needed. He’s a guy that won’t suck at the end of the order, I don’t care if he hits left-handed, right-handed, or what at this point because beggars can’t be choosers.

I don't get it either

Some are complaining Church is injury prone … hell, even if he misses the rest of the year we’ve still improved our team by getting rid of FYF.

“Church has no power” – What? Exactly how much power did Frenchy give us?

Anyone who calls the Mets the Muts or the Phillies the Phaillies, or really uses any “witty derogatory nickname” for other teams is fucking retarded.

in unrelated news, the fact that Wren was able to trade Francoeur for someone with major league experience who has at least shown flashes of decency is so admirable that my respect for the guy has increased 10-fold. Great trade for the Braves.

I really like this deal

and not just because it gets rid of Frenchy. Church’s only real problem has been a lack of power this season, but can that be attributed to his cavernous home park? Here are his home/away splits.

Home: .216/.297/.278 in 97 at-bats
Away: .326/.359/.444 in 135 at-bats

We’ve seen what that park does to hitters and he has a history of being much better than he has this season.

Does this mean that we have a Diaz/Church platoon in right?

Diaz obviously has demolished lefties and Church has nearly an .800 OPS against righties while playing half of his games at citi field where his overall numbers are miserable. This platoon could end up putting up some pretty good numbers.

Will Wren still be looking to add a power bat? Or will he hope that if enough guys have high averages and OBPs then that will eventually equal runs?

This is bittersweet. While I like that he’s gone, I have to admit that I hide a small soft spot for the loser. Now that he’s a Met it only confounds that, and he’s going to get crucified in New York. I feel bad for him.

Ya know, while he certainly played his way out of Atlanta, that whole ‘change of scenery’ thing might work for him. Who knows? I agree that its curious that this trade would happen, and I have NO idea what Minaya would see in Frenchy because he’s had a lot of exposure to him, but that whole ‘potential’ thing has a ring of truth to it. If nothing else, you guys have a new punching bag :).

I love how this one trade completely sent the Braves fanbase rejoicing and the Mets fanbase into riots. The only downside for the Braves is that Church is older and not as good defensively. But he hits for better average. The power numbers and strikeouts are basically a wash (Church strikes out a TON). But he has a higher OPS. I honestly don’t think either Church or Frenchy will or would’ve played for us next year anyway. But who knows, if Church gets on a tear after the change of scenery…

There is a small chance that even a horrible hitter like Francoeur will get better after leaving horrible hitting coach extraordinaire TP behind.

Interesting

Didn’t know that Chone’s defensive projections were a combo stat. Do you know if there’s any actually projection in his formula for age, etc.?

Also, I wonder if the other metrics beyond UZR encompass arm ratings. There’s much still I need to learn about defensive metrics, it seems. I’m still running off of old UZR/150, before the arm adjustment.

Yeah, what’s lost in the whole situation is this. I think this is the beginning of the fanbase turning on him, as he turned down a lot of money (that McCann was happy to take) and it seemed at the time that he was being very greedy.

Schafer to CF, McLouth to a corner, and Church is main part of platoon with Anderson.

Bats start to rebound, pitching continues to shine, and defense is much improved. Braves overtake Phillies for NL East crown. Omar Minaya fired September 24th, day after Mets eliminated from playoff contention.

Yeah, you’re missing an injury. Schafer has a bum wrist that has been bugging him for a good part of the season (I don’t remember when or how it occured). Currently he’s been shelved in AAA. But I do like your plan! Except the firing of Omar. They need to keep him as long as they can.

by soup du jour on Jul 10, 2009 7:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Injury…been bugging him since the first week of the season. And he was hitting .220 when he was sent down.

by pancanbra on Jul 10, 2009 7:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thanks for that. Any other minor league guys like Schafer would struggle a bit with the bat, but be plus defenders in CF? That’s more valuable than GA…

He was WAY worse than Anderson was/is! And yes, Schafer has an injury that is still flaring up in AAA from time to time.

As of June 12th, Schafer’s wOBA was ten points worse than Anderson’s.

Link.

Right now, the difference is .030 points. Anderson has rebounded towards expectations. Schafer could have done the same given more time. His minor league track record is solid.

by Sky Kalkman on Jul 10, 2009 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

but his K rate was outrageous. Schafer has a decent minor league track record, but so do hundreds of other MLB players who could never put it together. Anderson was a much better bet due to his MLB track record.

And hundreds of MLB players stop hitting and retire.

I agree GA was the better bet offensively. But defense probably made Schafer the better player.

by Sky Kalkman on Jul 10, 2009 8:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

All in all, Schafer’s career batting numbers will probably look really similar to GA’s if he stays relatively healthy. But he has better speed and plays much better defense, so if he becomes what he projects to be, he’ll end up being a better major leaguer by the time he’s done.

by Bronn on Jul 10, 2009 8:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

except for the fact that Schafer had more walks in less than half a season than Anderson’s career average. And the fact that Schafer has more power already as a 22 year old. So i dont see how they are remotely similar

I’m not sure we are talking about which will be the better player, but rather which would be the better player this year. Schafer SHOULD end up having a career much better than Anderson’s, but this year, I think Anderson was the better option.

Schafer was looking downright pitiful on fastballs.

You've got your blinders on again

or are just simply missing the point. As good as GA has been lately, and as bad as Schafer’s offense was earlier, the two have had very similar overall value this year.

You aren’t the czar of typographic emphasis

Schafer in 50 games – .204 / .313 / .287 / .600
Anderson in 64 games – 273 / .304 / .400 / .704

Not spectacular for either one, but Anderson’s line is better.

If we are taking defense into consideration, then sure, Logan was better, but I was talking specifically about offense.

Schafer was battling against some wrist injuries, so he wouldn’t necessarily have rebounded without getting healthier. But he’ll probably be a decent major league hitter next year if he’s able to rehab and get some work in with Gwinnett later this season.

I loved Frenchy and rooted for him...

….until he showed himself to be a crying, whiny little bitch. He complains about getting sent down for 3 days (!!!), talks about the unimportance of OBP, recently was quoted as saying he “hopes he gets his shot somewhere” (as if the last 4 years haven’t been enough of a shot), and just seems to refuse to take any responsibility for his struggles. Works for both teams...

Church wasn’t playing too much anyway. Realistically you have seen all that Church is capable of doing. It is possible that they COULD get more out of Frechy. Perhaps a change of scenery does help him. So for given that they aren’t paying any more for him they get a defensive upgrade and maybe trade bait later this month?

That being said-I think Wren was smart to do what he could do to move him. Do I think Church is an impact bat? No. However a Platoon of Church and Diaz can be a league average OFer if the cards fall right. My only concern is that having Church platoon with Diaz leaves Anderson as the fulltime LF.

by calbers on Jul 10, 2009 8:18 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah. Just compare Infante’s average to Anderson’s. Then try and remember how good Infante is at the top of the lineup and the ability of actually having someone with power batting behind Chipper and McCann (McLouth). Need I say more?

by pancanbra on Jul 10, 2009 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree.

I would love to see a platton partner for Anderson in LF but I don’t think Infante is the guy for that. Hell…the way Chipper and Escobar are bangedup these days..he may never see action outside of the infield.

If by works for both teams, you mean that the Mets will have to spend less time playing baseball in a losing season, (because Francoeur will help them make more outs faster) then yes, it works for them.

The best thing this trade does for us is it gets Francoeur out of the lineup EVERY day. Who cares if Church is playing or not. Our fatal flaw was consistently putting a .250 hitter with no power and no walks in the lineup.

Actually Boog is probably one of the best announcers in the game. He knows his shit and keeps the conversation going.

by 17843 on Jul 11, 2009 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

My only thing with Boog

is that he sometimes has an agenda and will push it during his broadcast. Now almost always his agenda is something I agree with, like “Well why should you have a different approach in a different spot in the batting order? The objective is always to get on base, right?” But you still shouldn’t attempt to overly assert a point of view while calling play by play, even if you have an insightful one. It’s too much like hosting a radio show.

But that’s not really a big complaint, he’s still my favorite (tied with Joe). He does his research, he has numbers to talk about, and he has fun doing his job, which it makes it fun to listen to him.

by Bronn on Jul 11, 2009 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sure, but other announcers have their own agenda to push during a broadcast, they just regurgitate the same bullshit.

I agree with everything you have to say in the second paragraph. We’re very lucky to have a smart, informed broadcaster and an experienced baseball guy for him to work with. Beats listening to a lot of other team’s stiffs.

by 17843 on Jul 11, 2009 12:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I could not disagree more. The guy is brutal. He’s not Rob Dibble bad, but he’s awful. Back when the Braves had good announcers, they’d call the game first, talk about everything else second. It was like radio, you could close your eyes and tell what was going on. You know who was at the plate, who was pitching, the count, how many out, the inning. This guy just babbles on about whatever like it’s more important than the game.

Baseball on TV is already flawed since your at the mercy of whatever camera angle they choose to show you, and if they decide to show stuff like the score and count and player’s names on the screen. When you’ve got a guy as inept at the play by play as Boog, it makes things even worse. The guy is terrible and I feel bad that Joe Simpson is making himself a worse announce to accomodate him.

by cbwilk on Jul 11, 2009 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Radio is radio. There should be less emphasis on describing the action for TV guys because you’re seeing what is happening. Boog seems to understand this and fills time by talking about things that baseball fans might be interested in. There’s nothing interesting or really useful about a play-by-play guy who does nothing but tell you what’s going on. I’m watching the game and paying attention; I know the score, who’s up, usually what the count is, etc. I’d rather listen to someone talk about UZR.

And there’s a difference between being bad at describing on-field action and not being capable of broadcasting a baseball game intelligently (Dibble, Phillips, etc.).

by 17843 on Jul 11, 2009 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

To each his own. When I’m watching the game I’m watching it too. But rather than hearing about baseball, I get his nonsense. I don’t like him, he doesn’t talk about the game.

I still can't get...

…that there’s plenty of announcers who don’t see the fun in playing along with the “jinxing” deal.

I watch a lot of Hawks games on Sportsouth, and Bob Rathbun isn’t great, but if he starts talking about how good a free throw shooter a man is and that guy misses one, he acknowledges it and laughs. He doesn’t really think he magically altered the universe by talking about it, but it’s good announcing.

There’s so many ways in which you can make allusion to the no-hitter and still go along with the jinxing joke. Like thus:

“Let me phrase this carefully-there’s a 0 in a conspicuous place on the scoreboard and it’s the 6th inning.”

“I’m not going to use the P word, but it’s the 5th inning and no one has reached base.”

“I’m avoiding using a particular word, but just know that if David Wright gets a hit here, it will be the Mets’ first hit.”

All of those are acceptable, clearly present the in-game situation, and don’t take the fun out of it.

I love this trade. Even ignoring the FYF side of things, I’m a huge Ryan Church fan. He’s been one of my favorite MLB players for a while. I was pissed when he got sent to the Mets. The guy is a class act, he treats the fans great, and even better, he hustles his ass off on the field. I don’t get what other teams haven’t seen in him, I know that Frank Robinson didn’t like him cause he wasn’t a veteran, and I’m assuming that not being Latino and actually having accountability doomed him in New York. The guy isn’t an amazing player, but he’s a very solid one and a huge upgrade to our lineup. Omar Minyana is a moron, Frank Wren might be a genius. Go Braves!

I’ve always loved Church as a player, even while he was playing as a rival against us. A good guy to get, and any time you can get a guy with a career 108 OPS+ for a guy with a career 87 OPS+ that’s cheaper and plays the same position, well I think that’s just about a no-brainer upgrade.

Omar Minyana loves Latinos. He tries to get as many of them as he can at every level of the organization. And he’ll be loyal to them to a fault. We had the Mets AAA team her in Norfolk forever and I can’t tell you how many non-Latino guys would comment on how they couldn’t get a shot because they weren’t named Hernandez or Ramirez or Martinez. Sure, some of those guys didn’t deserve a shot, but there were a number of times I saw a Latin player get preference, either with playing time or a promotion, over a non-Latino who was clearly a better player.

Didn’t he try to play the Latin card on a free agent this offseason, and really pissed them off?

My friend and I had a joke

That Minaya is actually homeless. Especially during the off-season, it seems like every Hot Stove period, Minaya is over at some hot free agent’s house during the holiday, trying to woo them into signing with the Mets. It’s like he spent a winter at Pedro Martinez’s house in the DR one time, he was over at Carlos Delgado’s house in PR, and spent one winter in Venezuela trying to, and successfully extend Johan Santana.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

Gotcha ... which makes Sheff's signing even more ridiculous/ironic

I have always liked Ryan Church, except when he was playing us.It seemed he always got a clutch hit or made a great catch that made a difference in us winning or losing.

I’m happy to have him on our team now. I think the Guy is underrated, and he will surprise some with his talents!

I also wish Frenchy and his wife the best in NY. This is going to be quite and adjustment for a country boy from Ga,
I hope we can drop the insults, now that he’s gone.

…….It’s just so weird. Right after we acquired Nate, we played the Pirates. What are the freaking odds? I guess it’s good in the same way it’s good to jump into the pool, as opposed to slowly easing into it.

I’m obviously a huge fan of this trade. A replacement level player would’ve been around a win upgrade over Francoeur over the rest of the season. Instead, we got someone who should be around a win over replacement. Church’s power hasn’t been there this season, but that’s on account of a ridiculous HR/FB rate. Whether it’s the ballpark or steady recovery from missing a lot of last year, he should hit for more power in Atlanta and at least will hit and get on-base at normal rates. His defense is also very solid.

I don’t like that this probably makes Wren think we shouldn’t add another bat, but this is a win-win for us. Francoeur is going to the Mets and we get an upgrade in right field.

He should be rounder.

Nobody questions the man’s ability to get to and from the dugout.

Hey Failcoeur!

Q: If on-base pct is so important then why don't they put it on the scoreboard? -Failcoeur

A: Because the Braves don't want to show their fans how bad you suck.
