Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 7/9

Apologies to whoever it was I warned and then deleted their Baseball America top 25 list yesterday. When I went to the site the only list that was up was the paid for list with the snippet scouting reports.

Gwinnett 8, Durham 6

  • K. Johnson 2-2 3B, RBI, 3BB
  • B. Canizares 2-5 2B, HR(10), 3 RBI
  • C. Burke 2-5 HR(2), K

See now this is the Kelly Johnson that we know and love from a couple seasons back. Maybe Kelly can find himself in his 'rehab' stint in Gwinnett. I also think I am with everyone else saying that we should recall Chris Burke. I know he isn't the be all, end all (I mean he was DFA'd). Barbaro Canizares continues to hit baseballs.

Star-divide

Mississippi 3, Birmingham 7

  • J. Heyward 1-3 RBI
  • F. Freeman 0-2 2BB

Nothing special going on here. Kyle Cofield gave up all 7 runs between the 4th and 5th innings and the Braves just couldn't catch back up.

Potomac 5, Myrtle Beach 6 - 10 Innings

  • D. Linares 4-5 BB
  • G. Rodriguez 2-4 HR(1), 2 RBI, BB
  • E. Cordier 7IP 5H 2R 3BB 4K

Another solid start for Eric Cordier. He just keeps plugging along this season, but his peripherals just don't look great. Donell Linares actually reached base 6 times in this game. Along with his 4 hits and a walk he kncoked in the walk off run in the 10th but the third baseman made and error and allowed Linares to reach 1st. Not bad at all.

Rome 6, Greenville 2

  • A. Milligan 3-4 K
  • S. Shults 1-3 2B, RBI
  • P. Clemens 6IP 6H 1R 1BB 8K

Well maybe Paul Clemens is finally showing some life. This is his second good start in the last 3 and probably his best all around on the season. His run allowed was unearned and induced a disproportiate amount of groundballs (8-0). Maybe he can start to build on the things he has learned from these two good games.

Bluefield 0, Danville 2

  • RSF 2-3
  • R. Hefflinger 2-3
  • B. Oberholtzer 7IP 4H 0R 0BB 8K

Take a look at Bretty Oberholtzer here because he has been the best pitcher for Danville and pretty much the whole of the Appy League. In 23 innings he has only allowed 11 hits and 4 walks to go along with 23 Ks. Not so bad. Maybe Rome could use another pitcher.

Can Kelly Johnson play RF? I know he came up in LF, but I can’t remember how good is arm is.

He was mostly a SS/3B in the minors until he got to AA, then they moved him because there was nowhere in Atlanta for him to play the INF. And I am sure he can play RF but his Arm probably won’t play there.

He played RF a good bit that one year in AA when he was all over the place, but yeah the TJ surgery he had pretty much killed his arm strength. But, if he out hits FYF, which he wasn’t really doing by much, then he’d still be worth putting out there.

Truly, I am less worried about defense right now. We need to take the high school approach to the lineup…if you can hit, we’ll play you. If Kelly or Infante are hitting well, stick them in the outfield. I’d give up the two throws the right fielder has to make in a series for 12 atbats from a hot hitter.

I’m pulling for Kelly. Fans can turn on a player, but Kelly’s an important commodity if he regains his form.

Brett Oberholtzer

Anyone seen him pitch?

Met him in ST, but didn’t get to see him throw. Big guy with room to grow. Seemed very on the ball.
