Gwinnett at Durham - July 9, 2009
As a rising junior at Duke, I felt like it was high time I went to see a Durham Bulls game, and what better occasion than our own Gwinnett Braves traveling up to Durham? Gwinnett did not disappoint, as Kelly Johnson, Barbaro Canizares, and Chris Burke all had monster nights at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
The infamous Durham Bulls "Blue Monster", complete with the famous bull...more on him later
Gwinnett's leadoff man, Reid Gorecki, gets the game started. I had a special interest in this game, because there were two players named Reid in this game (Reid Brignac was the other, Durham's SS). My middle name is Reid, so i thought it was pretty nifty
Atlanta's own Kelly Johnson had himself a night, and here smokes a RBI triple to the right centerfield gap
Barbaro Canizares tries to drive Mr. Johnson home
Brandon Jones bats in the 1st
Chris Burke trots home after his homer to dead center. Burke played left last night
In the 4th, Canizares hit an utterly mammoth homerun over the bull. A season ticket holder I was sitting with said it was the longest homerun he'd ever seen at the DBAP. Not only did the left fielder not even move when he hit it, the people on top of the Blue Monster didn't either.
So overall it was a good night, until the 9th. Jon Huber almost managed to cough up an 8-1 lead, but a timely strikeout ended the game with the bags juiced, and Gwinnett won, 8-6!
It was a real nice ballpark, and a great time was had by all - I encourage any of you in the Durham area to go out to games, it's well worth it! Come see the tobacco capitol of the south! Go Braves!

Dang
You beat me to the punch, I was going to post something about the game on the 8th, and how Kelly Johnson hit a go-ahead 2-run homer in that game.
No biggie, I’m likely going to post one of my travel posts on DRaysBay sooner or later, since I hit up their AAA Bulls on the 8th, and went to the Trop on the 9th.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
Nice post
Thanks for sharing…oh, and GO HEELS! :)

Yeah, but he actually goes to Duke. You’re just a fan.

A fan since birth born into a family of fans…but, I get your point.

I’m just messing with you; a good friend of mine is a huge UNC fan who didn’t go there either. It’s just like being a fan of the Braves or anything else. I personally just never cared about a college that much, so I never got it.

Yeah…I should be a USF Bulls fan (that is my alma matter), but we just suck so bad in basketball…but, our FB team should be in the hunt for the BE title and a shot at a BCS this year!

I'd say UNC has a bigger percentage of Wal-Mart fans with no real affiliation to the school than any team going.

so not true
go to North Carolina (the state) and you will find that the VAST majority of Carolinians are either NCSU or UNC fans. Very few are Duke fans. Most Duke fans are from out of state.
I pull for UNC because that is where my family is from (going back to the 1700s, actually – I am doing a geneology study right now).
No, I didn’t go to school at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Does that mean I can’t root for them?
The largest Wal-Mart fanbase that I have seen would be Michigan, Duke, tOSU or USC.

EDIT
I forgot to add WFU as a popular choice for NC residents.

Dude, I live here (High Point)
And I disagree wholeheartedly with you. Yes, Duke has a small local fanbase, but that’s because their alumni base is so much smaller, particularly in-state. Carolina fans, though, come out of the woodworks when the team is playing well. They certainly weren’t there during the Doherty years. And over here, I’d put App right up there with those other schools. I guess plenty of dumb kids couldn’t get in anywhere better in-state.

A fellow Dukie!
Great pics and I’m glad to see a fellow dukie on here. But I cant believe it was your first time at the DBAP! I was hoping to get out to this game but wasn’t able to.
"Tobacco Capital of the South"? Really
How about Winston-Salem?
