John Smoltz said he would rather not make his first start of the season when his former team, the Atlanta Braves, come to town, June 19-21. "There is so much history and emotion that goes into it, but it's a game and I want to pitch the game. My only wish is that it wouldn't be my first game," he said. "Pitching is pitching and when I get out there it will be pitching. But there will also be too much leading into it and too much after it. It will not be normal ... You try and treat it like a normal game, but this one would not be a normal game. No matter how much I would want to sleep at night there would be anxious moments. I would deal with it the best way I can, but I know how much adrenaline and emotion I would put in that game."
Braves start not ideal for Smoltz

Come on
I understand something like that for Glavine, but Smoltz stayed with us and turned down big money to stay with the Braves. I have nothing against him for leaving for Boston when we didn’t offer nearly as much as they did.
Please...
$131 million into a career, you shouldn’t be bitching about a million here or there. Particularly if you’re going to do so for six months ad nauseum.

I do
Not because he left for the money…but because he has done more trash-talking about the Braves than he has pitching for Boston. He is getting paid $5M guaranteed to run his mouth right now.
Besides, how smart do the Braves look now? Smoltz hasn’t pitched and really isn’t close to being ready (one minor league rehad start, if I remember correctly, in which his velocity was way down).
Smoltz just needs to cram it up his cram-hole.

I won't say an unkind word about the man but...
Come on, John. Is it because we always lit up Glavine? Because Maddux was no longer invincible when he pitched against us after he left? Or is it that you’ve already figured out that the Red Sox will basically do whatever you ask in the interim if you can win them six or seven games in September and October? I still wish you luck, but are you saying you’d have the jitters, or you’d plunk someone because you’re still pissed off we wouldn’t give you $5 million to rehab? Maybe Curt Schilling can teach you how to blog.

Didn't Schilling play ...
a bunch of World of Warcraft? Maybe Smoltz can become a dark mage or something. That should eat up a lot of his time.
I would love to see Smoltz
in a World of Warcraft commercial “I’m John Smoltz, and I am a dark mage.” (cue pitching fireballs at enemys)

I think that calling Smoltzie a merc is a bit far-fetched.
No he shouldn’t have run his mouth the other day, or this winter…
But let’s be honest, he got a better deal, and he did the right thing and left. If I was a HOF pitcher about to hang ‘em up, I’d take the deal that was twice as big to go play for a real contender. That’s just the business of the game.
I mean the guy turned down bigger deals in the past to stay in Atlanta. But you don’t do that coming off a 72-win ball club. I’d seriously question the competitiveness of anyone who did. Because I think it’d be awfully tough to be a great athlete while being so lacking in competitiveness.
Q: If on-base pct is so important then why don't they put it on the scoreboard? -Failcoeur
A: Because the Braves don't want to show their fans how bad you suck.
You can't have it both ways
If he wanted to be seen as the competitor leaving for a better shot at a title, he shouldn’t have bitched like an old woman about how he was treated by the Braves. On the other hand, if he really wanted to stay with the Braves, and wanted to be seen as a guy who’s loyal to his team and fans, he should have taken the money the Braves were offering. You don’t get to be the martyr AND have the biggest contract.

Perfectly stated
He left for more money and a chance to compete. Should be the end of the story. But no, he has to run his mouth about how awful the Braves higher ups treated him (and now Glavine). Makes me lose a lot of respect for the man.
I agree with Smoltzie
I don’t want to see him pitch against the Braves either.
Can we just get 3 straight days of Brad Penny? Could Varitek pitch? Is Sidney Ponson available for the Sox to pick up? Jose Lima?
I would love it. After all the crap he said about how the Braves front office had no respect and didn’t trust that he could come back. I would LOVE to see us prove Frank Wren right by giving him a good ATL pounding.
I love Smoltz the former Brave. I can’t stand that when he got to Boston he immediately got Schilling disease of the mouth. He needs to shut up and play.
