Open Thread 6/8: Pirates at Braves
Pittsburgh Pirates at Atlanta Braves, Jun 8, 2009 7:10 PM EDT
Our favorite trading partner, the Pirates, come to town to visit their old friend Nate McLouth. Everyone light a candle and hold hands.

Duke is actually pitching quite well this year. He doesn’t strike out a ton of guys, but he’s got nice command and finally has the defensive support that he needs.
Did you not watch what happened in April?

3. Chipper

5. Anderson
6. Francoeur
7. Prado, 1B
8. Johnson
9. Kawakami
Hmm kj 8th?

Runners: Escobar at 3rd, Chipper at 2nd, McCann at 1st.
Pitch 1: In play, out(s)
7. Atlanta Braves
Alex White, RHP, North Carolina: They’d really like Zack Wheeler, but he’s not getting this far, and the asking prices on Matt Purke and Shelby Miller — more than double slot for this pick — will run them off.
24 hours. Praying Matzek falls.

Before our pick, as is Wheeler. Crow is dropping like a rock. If a team ahead of us grabs him, one of the two COULD fall to us. Otherwise, its a bunch of college arms…meh.

Callis (BA) has us with either Minor, White, or Miller as a fallback. THis is from Bradley’s little draft piece.
Damn, I want Wheeler.
Honestly, I don’t want a pitcher. But theres no position player after Ackley I’d like to see at 7. So yeah…pitcher. No need for a college arm. Matzek is the best prep arm in the draft…and dammit, the praise getting heaped upon him makes me tingle

Yup
And I don’t want Tate either. I don’t think the Braves are interested in him either, but if someone (like the Pads) take him we could get our man.
Its really looking like San Diego is gonna take Tate…thank god. He’s gonna probably demand above slot too, so thats another reason we’d be down on him

Could definitely happen. I can see Pitt cheaping out. Although they do like their high-priced high school arms…
I doubt they take Matzek…the two most comprehensive mocks I’ve seen have them taking Crow or Tony Sanchez.
And i have no idea what you’re talking about with the high school arms. They hate high school arms. Moskos, Lincoln, Maholm, Bullington, JVB…all college.

My bad
Wow, did Pitt really miss that badly on college arms?? I just assumed since they were all busts that they were HS kids, since they’re harder to project. Wow.
Maholm is solid enough, and they fucked up with JVB by making him a pitcher instead of a hitter. Bullington was seriously a horrible, indefensible pick, especially in THAT draft.

Hey everyone, lets all get our heads out of our asses. The Pirates have one less win than us and a better run differential. They’ve also allowed ONE MORE RUN THAN THE BRAVES ON THE SEASON. This isn’t some dogshit .350 team.

haha
yup. for sure.
It’s sad. My dad’s a lifelong Bucs fan, back from the Clemente days, and he’s just so downtrodden all the time. Didn’t get riled up over the McLouth deal, didn’t get excited for McCutchen. It’s like they’re so bad they’re sucking the fanhood right out of him. It’s not even hating on the team like we sometimes do the Braves, at least that’s passion, with him it’s just come to indifference.
Has no one considered that the Pirates probably didn’t shop McLouth, and got an offer that they thought was awesome, so they took it?

limited the damage. KK should be done for the night
This is what KK's gonna give you
And I’m OK with it from a guy brought here to be our #4 … 6 IP, 3 R, getting shelled a bit as he gets deeper into the game, etc.
We probably paid a little too much for him, but he’s been about what I expected.
Whew, finally caught up.
The 2 triples scared me bad last inning.
Let’s not give up any more of those please.

Good evening, everyone.
Joy in Chopville tonight?
this might be the sloppiest braves team I have seen in a long time. 2 base running blunders last inning and just a horrible way to throw by chipper
starting to worry about Chip's defense
might still be “small sample size”, but he looks quite a bit less in the field than in the past
no doubt
but becoming a defensive liability is tough to swallow with our GB-inducing pitching staff. We need guys to be solid all around.
Not entirely his fault
Defense lapse strikes again
it seems like every pitch he's thrown this year
is either way out of the zone or a meatball right down the middle. He’s gotta find his control soon.
What happened to all that positivity?
Oh right, its the 2009 Atlanta Braves. My bad.

This team has 13 baserunners through 6 innings, and 5 of the 6 runs scored on homers. We should have just a tad bit more than 6 right about now.

But still, we had 6 runs, that should have been enough. If you have a point, it would be now, saying we won’t be able to score now, since that HR offense was unsustainable.
oh please....
I’ve never said anything about the profanity, because it’s usually not that bad. I’m just referring to the ones that can’t seem to find anything else to say.
fair enough
it just seemed like the main point of your argument was that you didn’t like what was going on because people were cursing, which seems kind of ridiculous to me… when i’m watching a game and things start going south like that i curse in real life just like i do on here… it’s a way to vent and nothing more.

The base paths belonged to me, the runner. The rules gave me the right. I always went into a bag full speed, feet first. I had sharp spikes on my shoes. If the baseman stood where he had no business to be and got hurt, that was his fault. -Ty Cobb

Ross gonna have to do it.
Don’t swing at crap Ross. You have at least 3 pitches to get your pitch!

Yeah, you gotta love him watching the play, lolly gagging down the line and then not sliding into the plate.

well
Not sliding was actually the right move. Sliding slows you down and since it was a force play, it would have been the equivalent of sliding into first base.
and looking for new ways to rag on FYF.

Ross grounded to the SS. SS threw to home. Catcher foot came off plate

Ross hits a grounder deep in the hole at SS, Wilson gets to it, throws off balance to the plate (really nice play) but the throw pulls Jaramillo off and FYF gets in.

Props to Medlen
Rookie pitcher put in a clutch situation and he was incredible. Hopefully he really impressed Bobby with this and we’ll see him in some high pressure situations. His fastball, curve, and change were all working tonight. Nice job Kris.
Something overlooked...
Not trying to state the obvious here, but after moylans shit show, the braves relievers pitched nearly 9 innings of 5 hit, shut out baseball. Obviously, our offense showed again how pitiful it can be. But congrats to the relief staff tonight.
It's my yondaime4-OCD
It has to be at exactly 1,700.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
