Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 6/07
Columbus 12, Gwinnett 0
You know what? No one gets mentioned in this one. Instead I will use this space to remind you that Tommy Hanson starts for the Braves tomorrow against the Brewers. I honestly think we can expect a lot of Ks since he is going up against a team that Ks a lot and that has never seen him before. Also I think Gwinnett is going to have a rough time for the rest of the season with its pitching staff as they are now missing all three staff Aces.
Mississippi 4, Mobile 3 - Final 11 Innings
- M. Young 2-4 2B, RBI, 2BB, K, 3 SB(17)
- G. Creek 2-4 2B, HR(4), BB, K
- E. Campbell 1-5 HR(3)
Matt Young put together a great game here and was the hero of the day by knocking in Concepcion Rodriguez in the 11th. You have got to love this kid who is just the typical baseball rat/scrapper type player. Hell he's a pretty solid guy with excellent speed and great on base skills. Unfortunately he doesn't have much pop and doesn't consistently hit for a high AVG. I wish he would get in the show simply for what he is. I feel the same way about Wes Timmons in Gwinnett. Two guys aren't typical Braves players but just go to work every day and do things to help the team win.
Myrtle Beach 7, Potomac 6 - Game 1 - 7 Innings
- CJ Lee 2-4 2 2B, RBI, K
- F. Freeman 1-3 2B, RBI
- C. Johnson 2-4 HR(18), 2RBI
Cody Johnson finally gets a chance to hit a baseball after being off for the last 3 days and of course he hits it far. Also note that he did not strike out in the game either. Sweet. Eric Cordier pitched a decent game though he walked 4 in 3.1 innings and only struck out 1. But he has been one of the (if not the) best starter for the Pelicans this season.
Myrtle Beach 3, Potomac 6 - Game 2 - 7 Innings
- CJ 2-4 3B, 2K
- C. Johnson 0-1 2BB
- D. Francis 3IP 2H 3R 2BB 7K
Another game with no Ks for Johnson. I really think this is his first streak of games this season with no Ks. Apparently David Francis got the call to Myrtle Beach to replace Jeff Locke, which is good I think since he was doing long relief at Rome and I would really like to see him get some innings. It is interesting that Francis is replacing Locke because they are both northern guys with few innings under their belts and good stuff. Francis had a game last season where he struck out 16 men in 6 innings. That is easily one of the more impressive things I have seen from someone not name Tommy Hanson and I can't wait to see what the kid can do.
Rome 6, Charleston 7
- B. Schlehuber 1-3 BB, K
- Z. Spruill 6.1IP 5H 5R 2BB 1K
Zeke Spruill was the victim of some poor defense and relievers not picking him up after he left the game. The Braves went through 4 pitchers in the 7th inning and all of them did something ridiculous and in the end Zeke picked up 3 earned runs from the inning. He allowed 2 unearned runs earlier in the game. He really needs a good defense behind him. I hope the dip in the Ks isn't something to be worried about.

new name for the minor league recap:
The daily Jason Heyward, Cody Johnson, Freddie Freeman, Jordan Schafer, and a few other pitching prospects recap. That McLouth deal hurt our teams, but it was still a great trade.
"Jason Heyward might be the best offensive prospect i've seen in fifteen years. His game is solid. I would trade any of the current players we have on our 25 man roster for Heyward. He's that good." - NL Scout.

the only team that matters plays in Atlanta and it helped that team for the short term and the long term.

18 innings of McLouth, no runs. Hmm…better not stay this way or i want our prospects back! ha

David Francis et. al.
There were a few other transactions as well (as of June 5th):
The Rome Braves sent three pitchers to Myrtle Beach: Jaye Chapman, David Francis, and Jacob Thompson.
Rome receives Dimasther Delgado and Casey Hodges from extended spring training. Matthew Small goes to Rome from the Danville Braves roster.

Schafer didn’t play BTW.
If Dunn walks 30 fewer times, he'll drive in 15 more runs. This is thanks to the scientifically proven formula: RBI = (this is nonsense) (I made it all up).
Here's a stat: Wins as manager: Dusty Baker, 1,162; Bill James, 0.

I doubt Medlen is going to stay as the Braves’ long reliever for much longer. He should be back starting in Gwinnett before long.

Why so?
Nobody else was doing very well in that role.

it is a hip flexor. he’s assigned to Danville right now, which I’m not sure if that means he is going to be down there until they start playing or what.

It is just a paperwork assignment. Jason is traveling with the MB team. They just needed to make room on the roster while he gets better.

They don't list a 1B in the press release...
I wonder who beat out Freddie.
