Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 6/05

Sorry for not posting lately, my sleep schedule has been pretty FUBAR lately. Anyways tomorrow I am going to post one of my old "Would You Trade...?" posts in commemoration of Tommy Hanson's first major league start.

Gwinnett 9, Rochester 6

  • J. Schafer 1-4 BB, K, CS
  • R. Gorecki 3-5 2 HR(3), 4 RBI
  • D. Heath 4.2IP 8H 6R 4BB 4K

My guess is this is the level where Deunte Heath finally becomes a reliever. I just can't see his style of pitching really holding up past AA. (It didn't really hold up in Mississippi either. Jordan Schafer will become a fixture on this list every night until he is back in Atlanta. We all have a vested interest in him.

Mississippi 6, Mobile 2

  • M. Young 3-4 2B, SB(14), CS(9)
  • T. Jones 3-4 2B, BB, K, SB(10)
  • W. Cabrera 2-3 2RBI, 2BB, K

Several guys got multiple hits tonight, but with the loss of Gorkys Hernandez, Matt Young and Travis Jones move into the top two spots in the order and promptly got on base and caused sheer havoc. I like it. Jones is still an interesting case to me. He has a fairly polished game and throws a little speed in there as well. If he can add in the power he showed last year at Myrtle Beach and keep his AVG where it is now he could be a really nice prospect to have around if and when Kelly leaves.

Myrtle Beach @ Potomac - Double Header Postponed

That is three days in a row I believe. It has to stop raining at some point down there.

Augusta 0, Rome 1 - Game 1, 7 Innings

  • B. Schlehuber 1-3 2B, RBI, 2K
  • B. DeVall 7IP 2H 0R 0BB 5K

Brett Devall has been fan-f-in-tastic this season. His ERA is all the way down to 1.96 and he has allowed 1 run or less in 5 of his 7 starts this season. Honestly though I am not completely in love with his peripherals. His hits and walks are alright but he only has 25K in 36.2IP and his ground ball ratio is something like Tommy Hanson's. I know I am nitpicking, but in the lower minors when guys throw up great ERAs I like to see some substance behind it.

Augusta 2, Rome 7 - Game 2, 7 Innings

  • L. Sumoza 2-3 RBI
  • C. Culver 2-3
  • B. Schlehuber 2-3 HR(2), 4RBI
  • D. Delgado 4.1IP 1H 0R 2BB 8K

Ah ha! The other Delgado has made an appearance. And it was quite a nice one. Dimaster Delgado pitched decently in the GCL last season with a good K rate but was a little hit prone during the season. The Braves must think he has made some decent progress since last year since they are skipping him over Danville. He is 20 years old and is another one of our young guys to keep an eye on. I think the depth in Rome and even Myrtle Beach is a big reason why Jeff Locke was so expendable. You have 4-5 guys behind him in Rome who could be as good or better and we have plenty of MLB ready pitchers that are set for the next couple of seasons. I liked Locke a whole bunch, but we didn't necessarily need him. Also Braeden Schlehuber may finally be tapping into his latent power. His bat was supposed to be his calling card but he had a rough first month posting a .442 OPS. Last month that jumped to .706 and so far this month (in 5 games) it is up to .857. Lets add some more to our catching depth shall we?

Randy Gress has no need for movies.

His life is an action movie.

Too nitpickish re Devall. He is not even 19 and 1/2 yet. This is his 1st full professional season. The peripherals are ok and will likely improve as he garners a bit more experience and continues to grow into his frame.

Agreed.

I know it’s a small sample size, but he’s only giving up 6.6 H/9 with a pretty poorly regarded defensive team behind him and is a bit young for the level. There’s more than one way to be successful as a pitcher. Obviously though, the season’s still very young for him with only 36.2 IP.

Q: If on-base pct is so important then why don't they put it on the scoreboard? -Failcoeur

A: Because the Braves don't want to show their fans how bad you suck.
