Around SBN: Randy Moss A Raven?

"I'm using a very soft word in 'disappointed' because that ain't right," he said. "To go that far in your rehab, and then right before the time, to do that? Well, it's not my problem anymore, I just feel bad for a teammate of mine that I had for a long time."

WAAAH!

It was whiny when you demanded $5 mil not to throw a ptich, and it’s still whiny.

Yes and No

The move to me is bitter sweet. I’m glad Hanson is coming up, but at the same time Wren has pissed in the Cheerios of 2 of the greatest braves….

Whatever...

If he wants to do them a favor, he can give them a backrub or jack them off. We didn’t (and don’t) need to massage their egos at the expense of the team.

The egos got in the way, I’ll agree with you on that.

Wren offered him a contract filled with unattainable incentives and tried to play it off to the press like he’d offered the same ammount as the Red Sox. It was a dick move from Wren.

There’s a way to make smart business decisions for the good of the team without being a giant douche about it.

He offered him a contract that would have paid him based on his ACTUAL performance...

not automatically based on the best-case, as Boston has the ability to do.

Disagree

FW should have told them both in the offseason, “John and Tom, we thank you for your contributions to the Braves, but we don’t feel like it’s in the best interest of the club to bring you guys back as players. We hope that after your playing careers are over, you both would honor the team by coming back to work in whatever capacity can be mutually agreed upon.” That was FW’s intention from the get-go (and an excellent intention, imo), so why not do it in the offseason and get it over with?

Because he wasn't sure that was what he wanted...

At the time, there was a price point at which he was willing to take a chance that neither of them could ever put a uniform on again. It was $1 mil for Glavine. It was below the $5 mil Boston offered to Smoltz.

It was the correct decision, short-term because the Braves have a chance to compete this season and Hanson is more likely to make a major contribution than is Glavine with his health and velocity issues, and long-term because the experience Hanson gains this season benefits the team for many seasons to come.

I, for one, didn’t see the decision coming and was caught totally by surprise, but couldn’t be more pleased.

Shut Up, John!

I love you but will you shut up and pitch.

Successful teams are directed not by sentiment but by making cold hard decisions about fading players who don’t know when to retire. I would lose a great deal of respect for the Braves organization if they had rallied Smoltz, Glavine and Maddux for one last hurrah just because it felt right. Well, it didn’t feel right last year when those two broke down and we faded into oblivion.

Huzzah to Frank Wren.

You spend a good piece of your life gripping a baseball and in the end it turns out that it was the other way around all the time.

Smoltz has expressed his anger in the past at the regime of general manager Frank Wren, who he felt did not give him a chance to stay in Atlanta.

You’ve gotta be shitting me, John. I love you, but get your head out of your ass.
