Game 76 Recap: Phillies 4, Braves 5 in 10
The Braves scored a big win against the Phillies on Tuesday night, breaking Philadelphia's 9-game winning streak at Turner Field thanks to the late inning heroics by Martin Prado. After Mike Gonzalez had given up the lead on two solo homeruns in the eighth inning, Prado came through with a double to drive in the tying run. Then in extra innings, Prado came through again with runners on second and third by lacing a single over the drawn in outfield for the walk-off win.
Derek Lowe started a bit shakey and battled inconsistency all night, but he kept working through his troubles, and got some help from his defense, and held the Phillies to just two runs through six innings. The bullpen, except for Gonzalez, responded brilliantly, keeping the Braves close and allowing them to come back -- something they've been having trouble doing lately.
The middle of the order struggled for Atlanta, with just two hits combined from Chipper Jones, Brian McCann, and Garret Anderson, but it was the top of the order that did the damage as Gregor Blanco had three hits , including a triple, and Martin Prado had the first four-hit game of his career. It was great to see Prado come through in those tough situations -- he fits perfectly as the number-2 hitter for Atlanta. It's going to be tough to get him out of the lineup. Kelly Johnson may be relegated to backup duties for the foreseeable future.
Nate McLouth and Yunel Escobar were both once again out of the lineup because of injuries. Bobby Cox gave McLouth an extra day to rest his hamstring, and Escobar may need more than a day to be at a point where his hip is no longer a problem.

Dear Martin Prado,
You sonovabitch. Well done, and please forgive me.
However, I would like to see this continue for a while before I make a final decision on the 2b issue.
Good game, Bravos (well, most of them). 4 games back and 2 more against these Phils. let’s get it done!

Deal Kelly and Kotchman for a first baseman. Conor Jackson? Aubrey Huff? Idk, you tell me.

Final Decision Done !!
Kelly Johnson has had his shot, and w/ his contract simply trade him w/ some pitching package not named Hanson, JJ, Vasquez, and get another bat for this lineup. Frenchy can go w/ KJ in a package as well.
Please let Infante come back so that will force the Braves to make the choice, Prado & Infante have at-least earned the platoon role and Prado has earned the spot to start.
Bobby make the move and put him in the starting line up all the time. That is what most people on the blog have been saying since after the first mth of the season.
Gonzo a rough nite but he will bounce back like he always does. I just hope we do not do anything dumb and trade Yunel !!
An please call up CHRIS BURKE and send Diory H. back to AAA where he belongs.

No, he broke way too early to cover second and Utley dribbled one through the hole he created. He’s in over his head.
If Dunn walks 30 fewer times, he'll drive in 15 more runs. This is thanks to the scientifically proven formula: RBI = (this is nonsense) (I made it all up).

Yea, KJ can steal, when we send him, but he needs to get on base to do it.

You know, looking at Nitram’s stats and without being able to see him much in person, I don’t think you’re giving him his fair shake. I’m a KJ fan as well, but Kelly has had his opportunities, and right now we need someone with the hot hand.
At this point calling Johnson’s BABIP simply luck is missing the whole picture. Sure he’s gotten unlucky, but something else is wrong too, which is why I agree the its Prado’s turn to see what he can do.

I knew before I even opened this thread that there was going to be some condescending remark from joe about our little spat from yesterday. It’s tired and completely predictable. There is this weird clique here that seems to think they are the end-all, be-all for any and all arguments having to do with baseball, and the assholish way some of these dudes go about their arguments can be pretty weak. And joe always seems to get a pass for it because he has this rep for just being “asshole joe” and that’s the way it is.
So I don’t really know who you are or what you have to do with anything, but I’m pretty sure my remark (and the context in which it was made) has nothing to do with you.

Last night's game .....
Had more positives than negatives, which was very nice for a change and we come away with the WIN to start the series with the Phillies. I love the fact we stopped the insane 9-game winning streak the Phils had at OUR ballpark and had 13 hits against them in doing so.
It was good seeing others in the lineup coming through since the meat of the order is struggling. Now, if we can get all our cylinders firing at once we may have a chance at making ourselves a threat in the NLE.
I like the speed of Blanco & Prado at the top. When Nate comes back, it will allow us to plug in another speedy runner somewhere in the lineup…like Boog said a few weeks back, “speed doesn’t slump”. I think Bobby should let Prado start and keep Kelly as backup until Infante returns.
Lowe wasn’t stellar, but like a lot of our pitchers of late – giving up 2 runs should not lose you a ballgame and luckily last night it didn’t….but once again, our bullpen robbed our starter who held the opposition to less than 3 runs of the win.
Gyrating Gonzo failed last night, pure and simple. I wasn’t calling for his head on a platter after giving up back to back homers in the 8th last night, but I can and will bitch about the way he goes about his job of late. I recall someone saying last night he’s been “perfect” the previous 5 games – well as far as actual runs scored maybe (thank God for the defense behind him), but the drama that almost always surrounds his appearances makes you watch with your eyes partly covered because more times than not there’s a base runner (or two) involved. I like him and love watching him on the mound when he’s ON, but I don’t think I’m being unreasonable to want him to save a game or come in the game in the 8th and keep them off the bases more consistently.
I’m psyched about tonight’s game – hoping we can take the series against the Phillies.
A sweep would just be Christmas in July!
And if I never hear about FYF’s underwear again I’ll be a happy woman.

Keep starting Prado. I like KJ, but Prado deserves to keep starting until he falls off the face of the earth or until he starts getting as unlucky as KJ. KJ should be a solid bat off the bench.
I wish Diaz could man RF though.
I will say that Frenchy has looked better at the plate. He still moves his head too much which messes up his hands and he ends up chopping on the ball. But there is no excuse for swinging at the first pitch with the bases loaded when the pitcher hasn’t been consistently throwing strikes. I wanted to punch him in the nuts for that.
Good win though.

He was drafted as a SS, but the organization moved him to the outfield pretty quickly, and you really don’t see lefties at the ML level on that side of the infield. I think the plan would be for Diory to hold the spot down until Omar comes back.
I wouldn’t mind if the Braves packaged Kotchman in a deal, then all the Prado fanbois could be happy while he played 1B, and I personally would much rather see Prado’s defense at 1B than 2B.

My bad, had a brain fart, I actually forgot KJ throws right handed. I fail at life.

no you don’t, cause you caught your mistake before people ripped you a new one.
so it’s all good!
So if Yunel is on the trade block, does he really have an injury or are they sitting him as they find some takers? Not that that would make much sense to me though.
by Sparhawk on Jul 1, 2009 10:56 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No Idea...
My guess is that this benching is serving 3 purposes right now – nurse the injury, teach him a lesson and give Diory some experience at the position in case he becomes “the man” for the forseeable future.
Your idea could be a reason too…

Diory isn’t good enough to be a utility infielder, much less a starter.
If Dunn walks 30 fewer times, he'll drive in 15 more runs. This is thanks to the scientifically proven formula: RBI = (this is nonsense) (I made it all up).
Here's a stat: Wins as manager: Dusty Baker, 1,162; Bill James, 0.

I agree
but what other options do we have if we trade Yunel?

We dont trade Yunel thats what lol. I mean gettin rid of a great defender like him and one of the best bats on this team with already a putrid offense we might as well pack it in this year.

One would assume we'd get an SS as part of any deal.
And Infante should be back very shortly.

of course i figure we would prolly get a SS in return but i mean how good would he be? Not as good as Escobar with the bat im sure so we still weaken the offense so still not a very smart move as far as an in season trade.

If this were the deal
we would probably get a serviceable enough ss in return and a big bat. The serviceable ss will obviously not be an upgrade, but the bat WOULD be an upgrade presumably in RF.

Wonder who we could trade with to um . . . do that kind of deal.
What teams do we know have a glaring hole at SS
by drumzalicious on Jul 1, 2009 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
who said anything about a glaring hole at SS?
A better question would be “what teams have expendible OFers that they are willing to trade for one of the best SS in the game, who just happens to be making chump change, oh, and who is under team control for another 4 years?” Then said team could throw in a serviceable SS if we throw in a prospect.
Something along those lines could get a deal done.

Well what teams are there.
Boston isnt gonna give up Bay and Bay for half a season isnt worth Escobar. Even Bay and Bucholtz. Well maybe then . . . lol
Outside of the Red Sox im not to aware of any other teams. care to enlighten?
by drumzalicious on Jul 1, 2009 5:39 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Sure
Boston (Bay isn’t the only impact bat they have)
Toronto
Yankees
Baltimore
Washington
Tampa
Colorado
Cleveland
the list goes on…

not their starters
of course, but they have others in their organizations that would be better than Diory.
The list is teams who have expendable OFers.

Justin
come on man. “but they have others in their organizations that would be better than Diory.”
Dude thats not sayin a whole lot man. Earlier when you said to get a SS in the deal you know i was thinkin that you meant a guy that can start and be pretty solid your above statement does NOT make me feel comfortable about tradin Escobar just for an OF and a seemingly below average with the bat SS. I mean Frenchy right now is better to have in RF than get a SS that is below average, at least Frenchy is showin some life to him. We will actually be weakening our Putrid offense if that is somehow possible.

it isn't my fault you thought that
I said all along that the ss we “would” get in return would not be as good as Yunel, but rather, that he would be serviceable. The upgrade in RF would be more than enough to make up for this.
Think of it this way – we go from a horrible RF and great SS to a serviceable SS and great RF…

by MichaelProcton on Jul 1, 2009 11:48 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I just dont see why we should think to trade Escobar. His great defense and above average offense is vital for this team. He plays a pivotal role for the Braves. I mean i guess it would depend who we could get, im fine with askin around seein who all is out there, i dont see a trade gettin done, nor should it unless its the right deal. I just cant think of a right deal right now, doesn’t mean its not one though.

KJ hating? Really? Seems to me most on here like KJ and want to see him continue starting. Sure you have some fans comin on sayin start Prado and then of course me but most people on here love the guy for some unexplained reason. Oh wait thats right his BABIP is really low and he is unlucky thats right, damn im glad i caught myself lol.

We will see now that he only plays one position most of the time now and then from time to time to fill in at 3B for Chipper. We will NOW see exactly how good his d is at 2B.

We will just have to agree to dissagree. I mean im thinkin that if you play basically 1 position you get better at it especially gettin to start there everyday from what he was doin or at least he isn’t as bad as a defensive 2B as it looks. Its just like KJ he has been gettin better than when he originally started there for us a few years ago. And Prado has been playin 2B, 1B, and 3B so he has to do alot. Now he can basically concentrate on playin 2B especially once Infante comes back cause then Infante will be playin 3B and 1B when chipper and Kotchman is hurt or needs a day off.

McLouth to Right and Batting Fourth?
What If Blanco stayed at the top, McLouth moved to right and batter 4th.
Therefore:
CF Blanco
2B Prado
3B Jones
RF McLovin
C Heaps
SS Esco
LF FUGA
1B Katchrocket
P (whoever)

Look at how it expands the line up too. No more black holes.
Package something with KJ, Kotch, and FYF and we could get a nice power piece to gain even more.

I'm very hesitant
to trade Kotch…I feel a big 2nd half coming from him, and that glove will be a hard one to replace.

I like him too
We have much more pitching than hitting as well.
I was the most excited about the lineup as opposed to the trade possibilities.

Kotch should not be traded. . . .
As far as Blanco in CF. I would be curious to see that. He had a pretty good OBP last year for us.

Diaz in there at some point as well. KJ could spell Prado at 2B on Chipper’s day off.
