Open Thread 6/30: Phillies at Braves

Philadelphia Phillies at Atlanta Braves, Jun 30, 2009 7:10 PM EDT

Derek Lowe is on the mound for the Braves tonight, as they open up a three-game set against the Phillies. The Braves are 4-and-2 against Philly this year, all games having been played in Philly. Strange that we are almost at the All-Star break and this is the first time we are seeing the Phillies in Atlanta.

Our un-excitable left fielder, Garret Anderson, celebrates his 37th birthday today. He's done well on previous birthdays, compiling a .313 (15-for-48) average, 7 runs, 4 doubles, 5 home runs, and 11 RBIs.

Derek Lowe needs to have a good start after three disastrous starts in a row. Today's game will be an interesting contrast as he faces the Phillies, who lead the NL in homeruns, while Lowe has the fifth-lowest HR allowed per 9 IP rate in the majors. Let's see if he can rediscover that opening day form, when he twirled 8 shutout innings against the World Champs, allowing just 2 hits.

According to Bowman

Escobar and McLouth are still out of the lineup

by drumzalicious on Jun 30, 2009 6:05 PM EDT reply actions

I read on DOB’s blog that at least Escobar was in

Bowman said cox originally had em in. then afterwards was told he couldnt play.

isn’t it in Philly where Comcast is holding fans hostage by not allowing fans that do not subscribe to cable to watch the Phillies on TV?

Who the hell doesn’t have digital cable? You don’t even really need that either…you can get it on standard cable. Its not on the sports tier

Depends team to team...

With so many of the games for us on Peachtree now, there are very few who carry it standard outside of the metro Atlanta area.

Chip Caray = still awful

Chip: “Rollins is only 7 for 23 against Lowe”

Me: 7/23 = .304 = pretty decent.

Chip: “Phillies are the market for a starting pitcher. In fact, talking to several of their players, they thought they were about to add Mark DeRosa.”

Never mind the fact that he’s blown this game (putting us in jeopardy of losing 10 in a row at home to one of our rivals), and that he’s been shaky all year long when he comes in with any slim lead… the guy is worth 1 in some imaginary stat on fangraphs so I must be right!

All I know is I have some dude who I’ve never had any sort of issue with (you) calling me a “fucking buffoon” because I dare say that Gonzo has been pretty rough in a number of close games this year, and this game in particular is a pretty shitty one to blow… which in turn makes me question whether we should be dishing out a huge contract for a guy giving us this sort of performance.

by get swoll yunel on Jun 30, 2009 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions

“this kind of performance”? Its one bad games. He’s been one of the best relievers in baseball this year, and you want to run him out of town based on one bad game, which doesn’t even matter anymore since its tied? by bigjoe on Jun 30, 2009 9:38 PM EDT up reply actions
