Open Thread 6/30: Phillies at Braves
Philadelphia Phillies at Atlanta Braves, Jun 30, 2009 7:10 PM EDT
Derek Lowe is on the mound for the Braves tonight, as they open up a three-game set against the Phillies. The Braves are 4-and-2 against Philly this year, all games having been played in Philly. Strange that we are almost at the All-Star break and this is the first time we are seeing the Phillies in Atlanta.
Our un-excitable left fielder, Garret Anderson, celebrates his 37th birthday today. He's done well on previous birthdays, compiling a .313 (15-for-48) average, 7 runs, 4 doubles, 5 home runs, and 11 RBIs.
Derek Lowe needs to have a good start after three disastrous starts in a row. Today's game will be an interesting contrast as he faces the Phillies, who lead the NL in homeruns, while Lowe has the fifth-lowest HR allowed per 9 IP rate in the majors. Let's see if he can rediscover that opening day form, when he twirled 8 shutout innings against the World Champs, allowing just 2 hits.

We went through 3 fucking months with no blackouts, and now, I’m arbitrarily blacked out?
I’m sorry, but thats a giant load of fucking bullshit.
In the Phillies viewing area. But I was never blacked out earlier this season, for them or any of the 3 other teams viewing areas I live in.
isn’t it in Philly where Comcast is holding fans hostage by not allowing fans that do not subscribe to cable to watch the Phillies on TV?
by nomorespinsports on Jun 30, 2009 7:17 PM EDT up reply actions
Who the hell doesn’t have digital cable? You don’t even really need that either…you can get it on standard cable. Its not on the sports tier
Depends team to team...
With so many of the games for us on Peachtree now, there are very few who carry it standard outside of the metro Atlanta area.

Sorry ’bout that bigjoe –
I get PTV and Chip has had entirely too much caffeine for my nerves.
I get PTV, but no commercials. Odd really. Maybe that’s why my feed pauses whenever the ball is in play.

And now I’m nauseous because Chip is talking about people going commando.
That’s a visual I did NOT need.
"Well behaved women rarely make history" ~ Laurel Ulrich
Yeah, I've noticed it can get that way myself...
Particularly on replays, which is a pain in the ass.
But the no commercials deal is something your provider worked out with them so they could just show the Braves games.

Chip Caray = still awful
Chip: “Rollins is only 7 for 23 against Lowe”
Me: 7/23 = .304 = pretty decent.
Chip: “Phillies are the market for a starting pitcher. In fact, talking to several of their players, they thought they were about to add Mark DeRosa.”
Joe: “Can he pitch?”
I’ve listened to them a few times, definitely a major improvement.

I'm not really fond of them...

Basically, he’s the reason we say Kelly isn’t THE unluckiest guy in the big leagues.
.218 BABIP. His groundball rate is down and his flyball rate up, but not by much, and his LD% is consistent.
His BB rate is also way below his career norms. But his swing % is pretty close to normal.
Aside from the fact that they have very similar BABIPs...
or are you allergic to facts?

Haha
Never mind the fact that he’s blown this game (putting us in jeopardy of losing 10 in a row at home to one of our rivals), and that he’s been shaky all year long when he comes in with any slim lead… the guy is worth 1 in some imaginary stat on fangraphs so I must be right!
by get swoll yunel on Jun 30, 2009 9:30 PM EDT up reply actions
There is respecting stats and using them to appreciate the game, and then there is this whole other level where they dominate every level of thinking some of you dudes have on baseball where it just becomes ridiculous.
Go fuck yourself, big guy.
by get swoll yunel on Jun 30, 2009 9:32 PM EDT up reply actions
I was quoting a stat about value, but hey, whatever floats your boat. I could bust out the K rate thats 2nd highest in the league, but you’d just shit on that too because GONZO HAD A BAD GAME AND HE SHOULD BE RUN OUT OF TOWN ON A RAIL
I don’t recall ever saying that or being knee jerk about anything. All I know is I have some dude who I’ve never had any sort of issue with (you) calling me a “fucking buffoon” because I dare say that Gonzo has been pretty rough in a number of close games this year, and this game in particular is a pretty shitty one to blow… which in turn makes me question whether we should be dishing out a huge contract for a guy giving us this sort of performance.
The arrogance and condescension from the stat nerd group here is just way too much sometimes.
by get swoll yunel on Jun 30, 2009 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions
“this kind of performance”? Its one bad games. He’s been one of the best relievers in baseball this year, and you want to run him out of town based on one bad game, which doesn’t even matter anymore since its tied? Hey, Soriano allowed a game tying homer in New York last month, how about we shoot him to the moon on a rocket too?
He’s had more than one bad game, dude. You are doing the opposite of hyperbole.
K rates do not necessarily a great pitcher make.

It’s amazing how this team finds new ways to lose everyday. It’s almost like they’re trying to blow games.
Question: So if we come back to win ....
Who gets the win?
Did Gonzo just insure Lowe misses out on a win no matter what?
"Well behaved women rarely make history" ~ Laurel Ulrich
Pretty much. Since he’s already out of the game, he’s no longer the pitcher of record. Gonzo is until we tie and a different pitcher pitches.
