I don't think Medlen will stay around...
… you’ll be seeing Tommy Hanson next time around.
Oh, Bobby.

Hanson to the rotation and Medlen to the pen
would significantly improve the overall pitching staff I think.
by was385 on Jun 3, 2009 6:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Medlen and Hanson both need major league innings. The idea that both are going to step in and have an immediate impact is probably a little hopeful. We need to start working them in for future seasons.

Hey...
Has everyone heard that the Braves released Tom Glavine?
I haven’t seen a fanshot/fanpost/main story/etc. on this subject yet and just wanted to make sure. Maybe I should create one on my own right now…

I look forward to posting in it.

“We appreciate and respect everything Tom has done for and brought to the Atlanta Braves organization and our fans,” said Executive Vice President and General Manager Frank Wren. “His accomplishments for our club during his hall of fame career is a measure of his dedication that we will always respect and admire. We wish him nothing but the very best.”

Trade Partners
Would the Braves take on Matt Holiday’s contract in a trade. A’s & Braves have worked deals in the past

by Jessero on Jun 3, 2009 6:28 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I guess we tried to trade him but we knew no one would want that contract.

I don’t know, I wasn’t in favor of signing Glavine in the first place, but the timing of this just seems like a dick move on Wren’s part.
by Lennox on Jun 3, 2009 6:33 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I agree, he’s worked his ass off to get ready tp pitch for the Braves again. Why wait until now to release him, just after he had a quality start in a minor league re-hab start! Bad timing to say the least!

Because
1. It’s after June 1st
2. Medlen’s pitching well
and
3. The Big 3 (Lowe, JJ, and KK) are all healthy.

the big three doesn’t include vazquez?

While i wasn’t too excited about Glavine clogging up our rotation, it seems lame that they do this after he’s gone through the rehab and announced himself ready.
by Slee on Jun 3, 2009 6:35 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Finally we have payback for him signing with the Mets! ;)
This was the right move by Wren. There was no reason to give away the $1 million roster bonus to Glavine for what was going to inevitably be a handful of awful starts before he went back on the DL when Medlen and/or Hanson can give the team much better. After this and the Schafer move, I’ll have to bump up my organizational rating on Friday.

I feel really bad for Glavine but it’s almost certainly the right business decision. Wren has consistently said he didn’t want to call up Hanson until he had a permanent spot open and it looks like that’s finally happened. My guess is that Medlen has one more start and is either moved to the pen or demoted back to Triple-A.

Right business decision, but a real tough break for Glavine.
Hanson’s time is here now though. Onward and upward.

“He wants to pitch. He feels great,” his agent, Gregg Clifton, said. “He’s still shocked about being released by a team he’s been a member of, and he’s not prepared to retire. He looks forward to pitching again in 2009.”
Clifton said: “Tom is extremely disappointed. He agreed to return to the Atlanta Braves at a drastic discount, and assume all the risk for his 2009 contract, except for a base salary. He has fulfilled his obligations and rehabbed diligently to return to the Braves staff, and to not have that opportunity at this time is extremely disappointing for a Hall of Fame player like Tom Glavine.”

Last I checked, Glavine said he wouldn’t go anywhere BUT Atlanta, so what the hell does the discount nonsense matter?

So he's upset about a contract he agreed to sign?

Timing was bad, Wren is definitely a dick but the only real way I could see this hurting the team is if it puts a bad taste in some of the old guys’ mouths (Chipper, for instance) and erases some of the high from last night. Gonna be weird to watch the guy pitch for Phillie in a few weeks, though. . .

What a shocker. I think for the Braves, it’s a good decision. We MUST stop looking backward and focus on the future. I’m excited to see the new guys and how they will impact our team.

I'm so torn
Perfect business move, the Hanson era begins. But damn does Wren have to piss off every veteran on the team? He’s going to be an effective GM for years though, I do believe that.
On the other hand I love Glav even after he snubbed us for NYM, wish he didn’t go through his rehab just to be released.

He didn't get any promises, and he could have retired.

I'm aware.
My loyalty to Glavine should have obvious reasoning. It was the right move, I just didn’t want it to end like this.

This is not a good quote
“This was not a business decision,” Wren said. “This was a performance decision.”
by hoboken_wood on Jun 3, 2009 9:50 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Apparently they didn’t feel like shutting down a low-A team for 6 innings meant he was certain to be an effective pitcher in the bigs. Why is that unreasonable?
Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.
by MichaelProcton on Jun 3, 2009 11:23 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The move isn't unreasonable, the quote is.
If you send a guy to rehab and he pitches well, says he feels good and is ready to go, you don’t release him—shocking everyone, including Glavine—then say it was a performance decision. It wasn’t. He showed he was ready to compete and didn’t get the chance.
I’m not saying it wasn’t the appropriate move. Hanson’s ready, McLouth is here, long-term plan off and running. But don’t blow smoke. If you have the stones to make the call, don’t bullshit people with that placating, politically correct lip service.
FW is making moves, getting this ballclub where it needs to be. Fantastic and exciting. Maybe I’m not ruthless enough, but you also have to be able to sleep at night, no?

He showed he was ready to compete...
Against 19- and 20-year olds. That’s a far cry from major leaguers.

HR
made a point on MLB Tonight that he hoped that the Braves had a conversation with Glavine, sort of gave him the heads up, and offered retirement as an alternative to being released.
What are the chances any semblance of that discussion took place?
by hoboken_wood on Jun 3, 2009 10:28 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Seems like people are saying that exact conversation took place.
by Smoltz's Beard on Jun 3, 2009 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It did, per Wren.

by MichaelProcton on Jun 3, 2009 11:23 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It seems to me like by letting Glavine work himself into a position where he feels he’s ready to pitch at a major league level, they helped him out. The probably could have figured out a few weeks ago that he wasn’t going to pitch for them again and they could have given those minor league innings to a prospect, but they let him work himself into game shape and he could go out right now and pitch for a ML team if they needed him to. Sure, it sucks to get cut, but at least he’s in a good position to find a new job.
I also want to point out that I recently said that I was 100% certain that Glavine would never pitch for Atlanta again. So, yeah, I’m just that good.
