Glavine Released
According to Ken Rosenthal, Glavine has been released. Wow. This might be the right baseball move, but I don't like it. It's just not the right way for his Braves career to end. Does this mean we'll see Hanson soon? Or does Medlen stay in the rotation? I'm surprised this is how this went down. Odd ends for Smoltz and Glavine...

Hanson's turn
I agree that it’s sad to see Glavine’s time end this way, but at the same time, it was definitely the best baseball move. The fact that this opens up a long-term spot means it is time for Mr. Hanson.

I thought this was some kind of joke at first.
With the recent talk of who should get that fifth starter spot…
I feel bad that it came to this, but really he was about the 8th or 9th best option we had in the rotation.
Unbelievable…

Roster Bonus
The minute they activate him it costs them 1$ Mil – I imagine they realized that Glavine wasn’t going to give them that much value over the kids. Money’s tight in these times.

It was the right move, but I wish we hadn’t signed him to begin with. It sucks for Glavine to have had to do all that rehabbing for nothing….

They weren't counting on him taking this long to be ready.
No one will know what would have happened if the shoulder injury never happened, but he could well have been a better #5 than Reyes and Medlen have been, and then they’d be inclined to let him keep pitching.

I never saw this coming this quick. I think this might start something like the smoltz incident. I hope Hanson gets the spot; I don’t see Medlen staying in the starting Rotation. He can go to the pen. This may not have been the smartest move on the brave’s part right now for morale

Now that I’ve had a proper 2 minutes to think about it, I don’t like how this went down. If you’re going to release him then release him. Don’t wait until he goes through all that rehab and then pitches well in a rehab start to let him go when you had plenty of time to come to this decision. I realize that its a business, but I don’t like how this was handled.

suggested he retire
that somewhat makes me think they told him they werent convinced the rehab would be efficient anyway. Glavs was a stop-gap til the youngens are ready, I’m sure he must have seen it coming. Plus, he has to know he cant pitch the way he used to.
I’d make him a coach right away. Perhaps if for no other reason than to have him play/coach they shoulda kept him. But there’s no way he’s getting $1mil to blow up some opening innings.

but what do the Braves do? Pay him 2.5 million to make a few decent starts for us? Have him pitch at Gwinnett? They kinda had their hands tied on this one.

now that Chip’s locked up long term, we dont need another legendary “Face of the Braves” dude sticking around. Glavine was getting lit up the last few years. He was a favorite, for sure, but he needs to hang ’em up.

Sorry to see you go Mr. Glavine but we have to much talent wasting away. Great baseball move. It looks like we save probably around $2.25 million.
Glavine was due a $1 million bonus if the Braves added him to the active roster and would have received another $1.25 million after 90 days.

I am thinking more in terms of a trade
we couldnt afford to trade for Dunn…but now, we are free of Glav’s 2.5, we trade FYF and his sorry 4M and throw in a Medlen/other good prospect and ask the Nats to pay the remaining 3-ish M on Dunn’s contract…
or is this just completely unfeasible?

There’s a very obvious reason for this. As a long time Braves fan, I’m disappointed the era of Smoltz, Maddux, Glavine has come to an end. However, the era of Hanson and Jurrjens has just begun. Not to mention, with Tim Hudson coming back soon, we would have had 7 starters for 5 spots. Now we’ve got 6 starters for 5 spots, and it will be easier to move Kawakami to the bullpen to let Hudson take his spot in the rotation. Also, having Medlen coming out of the bullpen will only solidify it that much more. We’ll see what comes next.

Shocked but not surprised. The braves need to improve on offense not pitching. Having Glavine in the rotation is addition by subtraction. 1 he would have been blocking 1 of the yougins 2 he would have been recieving a paycheck where the money needs to go to a bat and HEll yeah to HAnson being called up.

I wish Glavine the best
He is a classy guy and I hope he is somehow involved with our organization in the future.
I think Wren made the right choice and made our team much more competitive with every move he made yesterday. I understand that some people could be upset with the Glavine release but remember Glavine left us for the mets and then came back for the nostalgia closure to his career. Wren made the best decision for our team in all regards. I’m glad that he had the fortitude to make the extremely tough decision.

makes sense
Glavine himself said that Medlin and Hanson were ready for the big leagues in spring. Braves were playing cheap and delayed those promotions too long already, and long relief for Medlin is a much better option than Acosta. Think a full farewell tour for Glavine to Danville, another stop in Rome, and a goodbye visit to Mississippi and Gwinnett would have been nice for the Braves vet, but Glavine clearly has aspirations of pitching in the majors the rest of this year (I hope he stays ahead of the Unit for wins). His soft-toss play does not bode well for the Braves until … well … until the allstar break – so I understand the decision – and this saves him a potential embarrassment of leaving Atlanta on a bad note.
The Braves fans can say good bye to one Tommy and welcome another to the major league roster. Glavine is a union man, and has helped many a player live by the tort of player friendly contracts. This time Tommy’s contract probably did him in for a farewell tour at the Ted.
