The Blue Jays are reportedly looking into dumping Vernon Wells and/or Alex Rios. I think Alex Rios would be an *amazing* pickup for RF. Him and Mclouth basically put up the same numbers, and I wouldn't mind seeing double out there.

Depends on his contract

I don’t think we can take on more than a couple of million more. I like the idea though!

Anyone with this line: .281 .328 .472 .800 (over the past 365 days) should be immediately welcomed here, not to mention the 20 HRs and 29 SBs (vs only 5 CS).

However, this is a tad troubling – Home vs Away splits:

Home: .293 .355 .516 .871
Away: .232 .287 .329 .616

(The above stats are from the 2009 season.)

Anywho, I am all for ANYONE replacing FYF (except Corky Miller).

At $10 mil/yr for the next 7...

That’s gonna cost a lot more than a couple million.

Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.

depending on who we can unload to get him

FYF is roughly $4M. to make the money work it would be FYF and one of our closers (with Downs out, and Acardo struggling), but would they/we be willing to pull the triggers on such an offer?

But where do we open up the money to pay for him down the road?

Is he really a guy you think will be worth $12 mil in two years?

Its says the jays are trying to free payroll

Hmmm...

Toronto plays in a HUGE park. It doesnt make sense he would hit better there.

It depends on what you define as ‘next to nothing’. I consider $12MM a year to be a very steep price, no matter what we’d give up in prospects, because it would prohibit us from doing anything else in the offseason, and we’d probably have to unload Vazquez or another similarly priced player to fit him in the budget. I would be very against taking on his contract as a whole, and I have my reservations about the Jays picking up even half of his salary.

There's a reason that the Jays want to trade Rios

He’s going to be getting $10 MM next year and then $12.5 MM a year after that through 2015, with a full no trade clause until the last year of the deal when it drops to a limited no trade clause.

by Lennox on Jun 29, 2009 5:44 PM EDT reply actions

He’s also underperformed quite a bit this year, .263/.321/.423, which has to be something of a concern for a guy who is locked in to big money for the next six years.

by Lennox on Jun 29, 2009 5:49 PM EDT up reply actions

And Vernon Wells is even worse…2010 : $12.5M, 2011 : $23M, 2012 : $21M, 2013 : $21M, 2014 : $21M WITH a full NTC. Ouchies.

Rios

Rios would be a great pick-up, for the following reasons.

1. even though he has a big contract he would be a nice pick-up to play RF and be a great addition to the lineup behind Mac.

2. Rios would be the nice addition to go along with McLouth in CF or schafer next season.

3. I would rather pick him up in the off-season, or make a run at Jason Bay than do any deal this season.

4. Bay is looking at 4/60 kind of deal or 5/70. I would do 5/70 for Bay yesterday. We could DFA Francis, we lose FUGA and then could deal kelly for a fongo and some shag balls and you have almost 9 million off the books.

by mauck98 on Jun 29, 2009 5:55 PM EDT reply actions

Whose money are you playing with here?

Are you ponying up the extra $10 mil a year for the next seven years?

Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.

by MichaelProcton on Jun 29, 2009 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions

The Money

The Money works he is due 9.7 million in 2010, then 12.5 million for the next 5 years.

Next season the Braves can clear salary pretty easily, also they can trade one of the surplus of starters with Lowe, JJ, KK, Hansen, Vasquez, and the option on Huddy. You can’t have a 6 man rotation and the Braves with their financial situation can’t justify spending a whopping 40 million on the rotation and then having Chippper’s option kick in that is almost 65% of the total payroll. We can’t be at that level, we could easily deal either Vasquez or Huddy depending on how he comes back from the TJ surgery. I am thinking a Deal to Milwaukee of Vasquez for either Corey Hart + prospects.

If We deal Vasquez we could easily deal him to the Blue Jays for Rios they will clear salary after next season and it will help them & us in the long run. They get the #2 to go with Doc Halladay and they have enough offense to score runs they are just in need of a solid #2.

by mauck98 on Jun 29, 2009 10:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Umm...

So why, precisely, would you think that the Brewers (a smaller market team than us) could take on Vasquez’ salary?

Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.

by MichaelProcton on Jun 29, 2009 11:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Playoffs

Because they are right in the middle of the playoff hunt and need a starter, Vasquez gives them a solid #2 or even #1a to Gallardo. This gives them a 1-2 punch to throw out there and win games. He is also locked up for 09 & 2010. They aren’t getting a 3 month rental they are getting a nice piece for this and next season. We could land Corey Hart who is arby eligible for the next 2 seasons and then is a FA. We could even include Kelly Johnson and then get a prospect back in return.

by mauck98 on Jun 30, 2009 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions

None of that addresses the money concern.

Their payroll constrictions are even worse than ours. We’re outspending them by $20 million.

Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.

by MichaelProcton on Jun 30, 2009 6:05 PM EDT up reply actions

In todays game

10-12 mil for a 28 year old outfielder with decent power and speed plus good defense isn’t really that bad. Depending on who Atlanta shipped to Toronto, that contract could fit its way into the budget.

How exactly?

Who do we have they would want that we could match salaries with.

by MichaelProcton on Jun 29, 2009 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Vaz or KK most likely. I’m not claiming to be an expert in the situation here, just stating that he would be worth the trouble.

Dream trade for me personally would be Kelly and Vazquez for Aaron Hill and Alex Rios, while cutting Frenchy and negating his contract. That would be rosterbation heaven. It would save them money and help the Braves anemic offense. One can dream.

If you went to 100 casual baseball fans in L.A., Chicago, New York, Atlanta and St. Louis, only 25 would say hes a top 5 2nd baseman.

He would be a nice pick up

its just his contract that worries me.

Also i disagree with the person saying to put him behind Mac.

I would love to see him bat 2nd. His SB ability right behind Nates SB ability makes a nice 1/2 infront of chipper especially with them both being able to hit for some power. I would put Esco 5th.

As far as Wells. That contract just looks bad he has started declining and i really dont see a team taking on that contract. Maybe they can work out something with the Mets or someone needing some offense and pay a portion of his contract.

We should have just got Griffey. He has 9 HRs this year.

The base paths belonged to me, the runner. The rules gave me the right. I always went into a bag full speed, feet first. I had sharp spikes on my shoes. If the baseman stood where he had no business to be and got hurt, that was his fault. -Ty Cobb

But Griffey’s had a better season overall. And he might have sold a few tickets, which I doubt GA is doing.

Why would I be joking? He would be a power upgrade over all of our OFs that were here from the beginning and has a WAY better eye than FYF.

Uhhh....no.

Because he isn’t worth the $5M that he would have cost to play here.

He wouldn’t upgrade our team in any way.

If we had gotten him, he would be playing LF and not RF, so his better eye than FYF is moot.

His line of 218 .332 .409 .741 isn’t much better than FUGAs line of 284 .312 .411 .723 – especially not $2M-$3M better.

Yea, but FYF wouldnt be playing RF, they would slide someone over, Griffey is old, but he has more pop than most of our OF

who would they slide over, FUGA? No, because we wouldn’t have signed him. We would have FYF in RF, Nate in CF and Griffey in LF. Griffey has been worse than FUGA so far (save for a few HRs), so why would we want to spend another $2-3M more on a worse player?
