Game 75 Recap: Red Sox 1, Braves 2
How good is Tommy Hanson? We're certainly finding out pretty quick. He has now pitched 20 consecutive scoreless innings with his 6 scoreless innings on Sunday, lowering his ERA to 2.48. He pitched around a bases loaded situation in the fourth inning and an error by his defense in the fifth. He only allowed four baserunners of his own on the day while dominating the Red Sox. We may not be too far away from saying that Tommy Hanson is the ace of the Braves pitching staff.
Chipper Jones added the first run of the day on an opposite field homer in the first innings, and Garret Anderson hit one of his own in the fourth. Brian McCann barely missed a homerun right after Chipper hit his, but the ball, which was crushed, went about 6 to 8 feet foul. The Braves were unable to manufacture any runs, but thankfull they hit two homeruns which ended up being enough to win. In fact, their scoring ineptness was on full display in this game, as they went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
Peter Moylan bailed out Eric O'Flaherty in the seventh after a hit and an error allowed the Red Sox to threaten. Rafael Soriano was his normal dominant self in the eighth inning, and Mike Gonzalez gave up the shutout in the ninth, but struck out Jacoby Ellsbury to end the game and preserve the win for Atlanta.

So after 20 scoreless innings in a row...
Are people still worried Tommy is too wild and has an FIP too high to succeed?
Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.
Today was his best start by far, since he kept the walks down to a minimal level. The flyballs still worry me.
But if a guy can keep the other team off the board without being perfect...
That’s not a bad thing, right?

It's nice to see a young starter succeed so quickly
but being realistic, he will need to command his pitches consistently (today was really the first day he did this) and start missing more bats. He’s shown that he has the stuff and mentality to succeed, but to continue this success, he (like almost every young starter) has refining to do. It’s not a negative thing against him, just part of his progression as a ballplayer.
I'm totally confident
that we will put this streak of 0-24 with RISP to an end with the upcoming vulnerable pitching staff of the Phillies.
Crooked numbers on the scoreboard would be just the ticket to set off the next series in fine fashion, dontcha think?

Nice win today
But I wanted to jump through the screen at Kelly Johnson. Bone headed plays in the field and he looked completely lost at the plate. He’s close to dipping below .200 now.
Infante can’t get back soon enough.
how did he look lost???
he had 2 very well-hit balls…once again, right at someone though.

Seriously...
How many more times can you run to his defense? Do you have a radar telling you when someone makes a negative comment about Kelly Johnson?
The guy’s hitting .218, is that because he’s always hitting the ball and he’s just getting unlucky?
But okay, let’s throw out the hitting component all together, how about his defense? Was he just unlucky there too?
in all fairness
he does hit a disproportionate amount of hard balls right at people. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a player do it more often than Kelly has this season.
honestly...
I can forgive his misfortune with the bat if he’s playing solid defense and playing hard but if he’s not going to do that what’s the point?
And I’m not saying he normally plays lazy because I don’t believe that, but with the way he played today…
I just feel like if you’re struggling with the bat you need to work harder at other things to show why you’re collecting a big league paycheck and he’s not doing that.
I really, really want these guys to succeed… Nothing would make me happier than to see Francouer, KJ and everyone else break out and start killing it, but when is it enough?
Kelly's defense has been fine this year...
Today was the first game in a while where I just thought it wasn’t good. And he’s been really unlucky with the bat this year.
"If I had a little humility, I would be perfect" - Ted Turner
If you hit 100 balls to the warning track
and they’re all caught by an outfielder, the end result is no different than a pop up to the pitcher. KJ has been a bum since the 2nd week of the season and there’s no excuse for his play.

I’m not arguing that Kelly should start over Prado, just that Kelly’s been unlucky. And you’re wrong. Balls hit to the warning track are much more valuable than pop-ups to the pitcher.
"If I had a little humility, I would be perfect" - Ted Turner
Shh...
In speculation-land, where a Kelly Johnson has a .000 BA with every batted ball a flyout to the track, it doesn’t matter.

Food for thought
Chipper Jones has 12 errors this year. But because he is hitting .300, how many people have complained? Kelly has 5 errors, but because he is flirting with the Mendoza line his defense is costing us games. FP sucks as a metric, but in this case it serves its purpose: Chip = .906, KJ = .982.
I understand KJ is hitting .218 with 39 SOs. But he is actually on pace to have a higher FP and fewer errors than last season. His failure at the plate is enough to warrant him getting less playing time, but don’t try to say that his defense is problem when it isn’t.
Chase Utley, 5 Es, FP = .986
Luis Castillo, 5 Es, FP = .982
Dan Uggla, 6 Es, FP = .981
He is pretty consistent with what you’d expect.
"Here comes Bream! Here's the throw to the plate! He is...safe! Braves win! Braves win! Braves win! Braves win!...Braves win!"
How many more times can you run to his defense?
As many times as is necessary – ie, as often as people say ridiculous things like “He looked lost at the plate” when in all reality, he looked very good at the plate today. Drew a walk, 2 hard hit balls, etc…
Criticize him. That is fine. Just don’t make stuff up that isn’t true about him.

“Lost at the plate” = working a full count to draw a walk and then stealing a base to get into scoring position for Chipper?
Yes. All four of those balls were in the strike zone anyway.
Don’t you realize he contributes NOTHING to this club?

Laving RISP
continues to worry me. Today we left 10 0n base. It seems once a week or so we score a ton of runs, then go into a drought. We have the ability obviously, but for one reason or another, we are very inconsistent. I have my opinions on WHY but will keep them to myself as not to start a war of words!

Really?
“We may not be too far away from saying that Tommy Hanson is the ace of the Braves pitching staff.” Are you projecting that something is going to happen to Javy Vazquez??? ;) Just kidding, of course. Seriously though, check this out: since Tommy Hanson debuted…
Lowe: 9.16 ERA, 2.20 WHIP and 2.89 K/9 in 18.2 IP (4 GS, 2 cut short by suckiness)
Hanson: 2.48 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 5.59 K/9 in 29 IP (5 GS)
Jurrjens: 3.22 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 8.06 K/9 in 22.1 IP (4 GS, 1cut short by rain)
Kawakami: 3.15 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 6.30 K/9 in 20 IP (4 GS, 1 cut short by injury)
Vazquez: 1.78 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 9.49 K/9 in 30.1 IP (4 GS)
So really, he’s been our fourth best starter since his promotion. Even if you take out his rocky debut, he’s peripherals don’t hang with those of our other three aces. And this is all during a Lowe slump!

So, basically what you are saying is that if we had some offense, we’d be riding high on our pitching staff?
"Here comes Bream! Here's the throw to the plate! He is...safe! Braves win! Braves win! Braves win! Braves win!...Braves win!"
Nah.
I’m saying that Javy Vazquez is doing to the Majors what Tommy Hanson did to AAA… and that our rotation is so deep that even the sparkling numbers of one Tommy Hanson would profile as our fourth best starter!

The ab.com recap included a note about a “super-hydration plan” or something like that by the trainers in the hours leading up to the game.

Wonderful game
Loved seeing Red Sox fans leaving unhappy. If anything at all, taking the finale felt better than taking the opener from the Yankees and letting them leave satisfied and smug.
Got a huge kick out of the AP recap, and their vague stats – “Tommy Hanson is the first NL rookie in history to record winning decisions against the Yankees and Red Sox in consecutive starts.” I’m surprised they didn’t add “in NL parks.” Just how often are the Yankees and Red Sox bunched up in Interleague that the chance to accomplish this feat occurs?
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
Yes, I giggled about that particular factoid myself.
I’d be more interested in knowing how many AL pitchers have done it.

Also
This kind of reminds me of Michael Jordan in the 1998 NBA Finals game 5, when he was riddled with similar flu-like symptoms, and through exhaustion and dehydration, still dominated the Utah Jazz, and hung 38 points on them in a win en route to another Bulls championship.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
I'd say that was a LITTLE bigger stage...

Hanson
The scoreless innings combined with the loads of baserunners tells me something about Hanson – he’s got the stuff, just not the experience. When the bases are juiced and he can work out of it, I feel like he’s really pitching. He just needs to get more time around the league, and we’ll see his baserunners drop vastly.
interesting point of view. I hope this is the case. I think that with the more time (experience) he has, the more comfortable he will be. When he is comfortable and fully confident, I think his K numbers will start to go up.

agreed
an inexperienced pitcher w/o the electricity he has would have an ERA ballooned to the size of FYF’s head. He’s obviously got the stuff and is just working in and out of his comfort. K’s going up, BB’s going down, ERA consistently low….. we are expecting that stuff.
Its so nice to have someone working through their issues while remaining run-stingy. Smoltz liked to give up four or so before figuring out his new exercise regimen solution.
The size of FYF's head makes me think...
of how difficult it must be for him to have it shoved so far up…well, never mind.
