Braves place reliever Jeff Bennett on the DL
According to a Twitter post from Mark Bowman:
The Braves have placed reliever Jeff Bennett on the 15-day DL with a broken left hand. According to a source, he punched a door.
Nice. So he's not good at baseball and he's not that smart either. "Hey, let's use the part of my body that is my livelihood as a weapon."
Left-handed reliever Boone Logan replaces Bennett on the roster. He had a 3.28 ERA at Gwinnett, with a .205 BAA, and 39 strikeouts in 35.2 IP.
There's some minor league movement today as well, with RHP Jeff Lyman going from Mississippi to Gwinnett, and LHP Richard Sullivan going from the Beach to Mississippi, and getting the start tonight in place of Lyman.

He's not a loser...
….he’s a very nice guy…a good guy. I would venture a guess that you don’t know the exact statistics on how may inherited runners he did or did not strand. I don’t know either, but I’m going to guess he stranded more than he let score.

It’s unfortunate, but if this is what it takes to get him out of the ‘pen, then maybe it’s the ol’, cliched, “blessing in disguise,” only without the disguise. He has been abysmal, giving up more hits/9 than any other pitcher on the active roster.

Oh, Don’t you know it’s just “bad luck”. This is hilarious to me, other players that are in a slump, or in this case worse don’t throw out the bad luck card. This is the craziest explanation that I have ever heard.
I ’ve watched KJ since his coming up and he has always been a streaky hitter, but this is the worse I have ever seen him.
Are we going to give him the entire season to get out of this long slump, or get some good luck, while he continues to cost us games?
I’m sorry about Bennett showing the entire world , that he not only throws stupid pitches but he’s also stupid off the mound!
I hope he heals quickly and goes on his way…

Yes, because that's what people say.
Just “he’s unlucky.” There’s no statsitical data that suggests that.

No statistical data? BABIP of .245, Career Low HR/FB, PrOPS of .738. Should I go on?
Part of it is Kelly himself sucking (less liners, less infield hits, more infield flies, career low P/PA), but part of it is bad luck too.

Yeah, I do like Bennett as a player.
He is valuable to the team but just not in the situations he was used in. He needs to be the guy brought in to give you 3-4 innings if say the the pitcher gets hit in the head with a baseball or after a two hour rain delay. Medlen needs to be that second 7th inning guy or guy who comes in in late close games if Gonzo/Soriano can’t go.

Per DOB's blog
“Bennett punched a door in a hallway adjacent to the dugout after the inning [Arod hit inning]. He said he was in such a state of frustration and anger that he couldn’t remember punching it, and could hardly believe it when he saw the dent and realized what he’d done.
The bone was broken cleanly and a bump rose beneath the skin. Bennett said he pushed the bone back, thinking that it was only a dislocated knuckle or something else.
He went back out and pitched the entire seventh inning with the broken bone, giving up a homer to Nick Swisher in that inning."
Dude pitched with a broken hand for an inning. Gota give him props for that at least.
by bbxxj on Jun 25, 2009 4:58 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Damn…he pitched pretty well that inning, too. Think he handed out a walk, but also had a nice strikeout to Jeter with RISP. Gotta give credit to Swish for hitting an opposite field homer.

Jeff Francoeur is only bad because he doesn’t have protection hitting behind him. Not his fault; it’s Schafer’s and the pitcher’s spot. But Jeff Bennett has all the protection in the world behind him in the bullpen (Gonzo, Raffy).

His ERA is deceiving
His ERA wasn’t out of the park, but he’s let way too many inherited runners score this year. I can sympathize that he’s been put in tough spots, but that’s what the dude gets payed for. It wouldn’t be so bad if it had only happened a couple times this year because every pitcher is going to have a bad night. It just seems like whenever he comes in with runners in base, they score more often than he holds them. If he can’t keep those guys from scoring then it is Bobby and Frank’s jobs to find somebody that can. I’m sure he’s a nice guy, but in the end you get paid for what you do on the field, not how you act off the field.

Since Bennett sucks and has consistently put up better ML numbers than Logan ever has…why exactly should we be excited about Logan’s “chance?”
