Around SBN: Following UFC 146 Loss, Jason 'Mayhem' Miller 'Done' in UFC

There's some surprise that [Braves first round draft pick Mike Minor] hasn't signed yet, but he could be waiting for the market to establish itself a little more. [The Orioles first round pick, fifth overall, Matt Hobgood] really could be the first domino to fall in a number of signings to come.

Kevin Goldstein examines the status of each first round pick
I read this news one of two ways, either I'm happy that we know why Minor hasn't signed yet, and he's just trying to make the best business decision (which is his right); or he's trying to get too much out of the Braves and this process will drag on all summer. Either way, I'm sort of disappointed that he doesn't want to get busy pitching.

There are those of us that might rather have the #8 pick next year than Minor this year.

It wouldn’t break my heart if we failed to sign him…

While I agree, the problem is if they weren’t willing to pony up the cash for a legitimate #7 talen this year, why would they pay for the same type of talent next year—especially when they would have two picks in the top 15.

Because that talent wouldn't be making ridiculous over-slot demands?

Also, this could be a way to sign a Type A guy without “losing” a pick.

Who is to say it wouldn't?

The whole slotting system is dying.

Q: If on-base pct is so important then why don't they put it on the scoreboard? -Failcoeur

A: Because the Braves don't want to show their fans how bad you suck.

He asked why they would pay for a guy with talent.

I answered.

Minor

I don’t know the guy can have 4 solid pitches he can use to get hitters out,and I for one have fallen in love with power arms that can throw 95 and have a good change-up,curve and slider. This kids tops out around 93 that’s not bad,I mean there are guys who pitch in the MLB who throws 88-89 and do a good job.Andy P. doesn’t throw 95 but he was a really good pitcher in his prime and still is getting it done today.Glavine in his prime wasn’t a flame thrower but he’s headed to the Hall. The Braves seem to like the way he pitches and is control, and seem to think he will be a good one,DeVall seems to be similar to this guy and they loved him as well.I do have a question though for some of you guys who follow baseball more than me what does the term pitchability means?

Minor isn’t a bad pick or a bad player, he’s just a poor choice at #7 where there was tons of better talent available. Pettitte isn’t a good comp because Pettitte has a really solid cutter that helps him generate tons of ground balls. And let’s face it: for every Glavine, there are dozens and dozens of Jeremy Sowerses. And even Glavine was drafted out of high school when he still had tons of room to grow. There’s actually a comp that really sticks out in my mind as a lefty with poor velocity, a great changeup and only a basic breaking ball: Chuck James. Now I AM NOT SAYING THAT MINOR IS THE NEXT CHUCK JAMES, but Minor nonetheless projects as a back-end starter at best.

As for “pitchability,” it refers to the ability to use your stuff effectively. Some guys have great stuff that doesn’t translate into outs because they don’t know how to use it. A “pitchabiltiy” guy might not have the greatest stuff, but he also doesn’t complicate things by walking tons of hitters or losing his composure on the mound. Now it’s important to realize that “pitchability” is great, but you also have to have some stuff to back it up; DeVall has far more potential in terms of his arsenal, and he’s got more time to develop it since he was a HS draft pick.

Minor

Minor can be a #2 or probably a #3—but he was a poor choice for the Braves’ highest pick in 18 years.

I would rather the Braves tell him its slot money (which isn’t bad) or you can re-enter next year’s draft and we will keep the #8 pick. Since there is a good chance, that there will be more available talent in the 2010 draft, the Braves might even come out ahead.

There is nothing to be gained by Minor sitting out the summer—nor should the Braves capitulate to his agent.

Does anybody know if the Braves are close to signing Hale?

Hale said he definately planned on signing the week after we drafted him, so that one is really odd…

I don’t think any expects Minor to sign for something out of ordinary for the #7 pick. Remember that there was a time a year ago when Minor was viewed by many as a top ten pick. Just because he didn’t end up being seen that high on a talent basis in June doesn’t mean he and his agent won’t ask for a bonus commensurate with the #7 selection. Also remember that MLB slashed the slot recommendations by 10% this year. That doesn’t mean teams are going to respect the new slots (the Braves themselves simply gave Heyward 2006 slot money despite MLB slashing slot recommendations prior to the 2007 draft). If the Giants give Wheeler 2008 slot money and the Reds give Leake 2008 slot money, the Braves will be hard-pressed not to give Minor 2008 slot money. It’s all about establishing just where the market will be.

Either way, Minor is signing. He knows he’ll look a lot worse in next years college pitching heavy draft and the Braves aren’t stupid enough to take the pick next year over ~250K.

How do you figure you can put a number on it?

Are you somehow privy to the negotiations?

He could just do what he does better than anyone, look at the numbers and extrapolate a position based on them. I might not always agree with his stats-only look at things, but nobody is better with numbers.

I mean, I understand that...

But it’s hard to extrapolate the difference between the two parties in a rookie contract negotiation.
