Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 6/23
Sorry this is going to be a quickie update tonight. If you can see the timestamp know that I just walked in the door.I will do an extended post tomorrow with lots of pics from the Sally League All Star Game (I took about 200 pics).
Buffalo 4, Gwinnett 5
- B. Canizares 1-3 2B, 2 RBI, BB
- G. Norton 1-1 3B, 2 RBI
Seriously this Greg Norton kid needs to be called up. He has a homer and a triple in two games with Gwinnett! Lots of power in that bat there.
Birmingham 1, Mississippi 6
- M. Young 2-5
- R. Reynoso 8IP 3H 0R 3BB 3K
Ryne Reynoso is quietly putting together a pretty solid season for the Braves. He has just been crafty not giving up a lot of hits and inducing a lot weak contact. He isn't striking out a whole lot of guys so he needs to remain exceptionally fine with his command.
- Carolina All Stars 1, California All Stars 2 - 10 Innings
- C. Johnson 0-4 2K
Heyward didn't get in the game
SAL South All Stars 7, SAL North All Stars 8
- Z. Spruill 1IP 1H 0R 1BB 1K
- JJ Hoover 1IP 0H 0R 0BB 2K
- J. Sucre 1-1 SB
- L. Sumoza 1-2 K
In depth updates on this one with pictures later on.
Danville 8, Pulaski 3
- M. Jones 3-6 2B, 3B, 4 RBI, K
- A. Milligan 3-6 2B
- R. Spanjer-Furstenburg 2-2 HR(1), 2 RBI, BB
- J. Teheran 3.1IP 5H 2R 0BB 5K
Several nice professional debuts here. Mycal Jones is our highest drafted player that we have signed so far. Milligan was a JUCO we drafted last year with a lot of potential. Riann Spanjer-Furstenburg is a guy gondeee mentioned a few weeks ago from South Africa. If he pans out he would be a coup of epic proportions. Also a nice seasonal debut by Julio Teheran who is still only 18.
GCL Tigers 9, GCL Braves 8
- F. De Los Santos 2-4 2B, BB
- C. Betancourt 1-4 2B, RBI, BB
- A. Odreman 2-4 3B, HR, 4 RBI, K
I'll be honest in that I don't know a ton about the GCL guys and that it is pretty difficult to get any real info without being there to see them play since it is mostly complex ball. Christian Betancourt was a big international signing from last summer and he is a 17 year old catcher with good defensive skills and a developing bat. Alberto Odreman is a 1B who showed some good power in the DSL last year though he is already 20 years old which makes him an elder statesman around the team.

Can someone make some scouting reports for all the players we drafted?
Or post a link if its been done before
For future reference, there's a search bar in the top right, but...

Chris Masters
Had a nice debut as well 3.2, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 8 K. The Dnaville team did not walk a batter! That not the Braves way we should cut them all LOL!
On the GCL here’s a few names to watch James Linger, they have him listed as Jim but it’s James here’s a nice article on him www.baseball.org.au/?Page=51058&MenuID=National…
Robinson Lopez here’s what Johnny Almaraz had to say: RHP – Another 18-year-old from the Dominican, Lopez is already 6’1" and weighs in at 185 pounds. He’ll be spending this summer in the Gulf Coast League. “At such a young age, Robinson is kind of similar to (Julio) Teheran in that he commands all of his pitches,” Almaraz explained. “He throws strikes with quality stuff. He’s got a fastball that is 92 to 96 mph. Robinson is pretty advanced, so he’s got the ability to compete at this level (GCL).”
Also Carlos Perez our top IFA pitcher signed last year here’s what Almaraz had to say about him. LHP – Last summer’s big signee pitched a few weeks ago in the Dominican and showed a fastball between 90-92 mph, along with an outstanding curveball and a good changeup. Perez will play this season in the GCL.
"Batting average (.405 -"four-oh-five"), RBIs ("arr-bee-eyes" -17)"
LOL.

Also on James Linger
He was the youngest player to ever make the Australian Olympic Team.
What about the DSL Braves
Are you going to include the DSL braves in the recap or is that not possible? Just asking
This is a good question, but I don’t think he usually posts the DSL results, if only because those guys are so far a way from making any kind of impact and the vast majority of them don’t even end up playing in the States (MiLB.com had stats back to 06 and I only counted 4 or 5 guys who have played A ball). But, I did think of this yesterday too and was actually surprised to see that the DSL team has been playing for almost a month now. They’re 11-9 and 4 games back in their division. They’ve got some players performing pretty well:
3B Edison Sanchez, 18 year old Venezuelan, .348 AVG, 1.022 OPS in 15 games
CF Wilson Rivera, 19 year old Dominican, .295 AVG, .901 OPS in 18 games
P Luis de Luna, 19 year old Domincan, 5-0 with a 0.38 ERA and a 0.58 WHIP in 7 games (4 starts)
P Andy Otero, 17 year old Panamanian, 1-0 with a 0.92 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP in 7 games (4 starts).
P Williams Perez, 18 year old Venezuelan, 0-0 with a 1.17 ERA and a 0.78 WHIP in 7 games (4 starts).

I think Failcoeur is pretty appropriate.
Wait, that’s not his last name?

So Heyward is still hurt, or...?
Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.
heyward has played the entire last week for Myrtle Beach. They just didn’t play everyone in the All Star game.
Weird...
He wasn’t a starter? I guess the numbers have been held back by the time off.

WP & HBP
My favorite stat lines from the Danville and GCL games:
Danville game: 1 WP & 7 HBP
GCL game: 8 WP & 2 HBP, + 2 Balks
…young wild pitching…
Question?
What’s the dIfference between Danville and GCL? Is Danville a rung above GCL? Why do some rooks get assigned there, and some to the GCL? Thanks guys!
Danville is better than the GCL

More specifically...
It’s one level up. GCL games are played at the Florida ST complexes in front of nobody. Usually (but not always), they’ll pick the older or better prospects so they can feel like they’re playing real baseball rather than like they’re at some kind of summer camp. They also work a lot more on breaking down guys’ games and teaching fundamentals in the GCL.
